100% Martin. My clients can't tell one sensor from the other, 20 mgp from 46mgp, 50mm from 35mm. But for sure they can tell the blurry photos from the sharp ones. In my book, no older excellent camera becomes suddenly a bad camera because of the new camera. I always find something of value on your chanel. Keep up the great work.

What’s not to like about buying used? Personally I would rather have a higher spec older camera than a low spec new one so I’ll stick with my Nikon D750 which cost around the same as a new Z50

What a realistic, humble and excellent video. I stumble upon your channel this morning and already watched several of the videos.
Question: How come all the sane photographers and reviewers are Brits, such as Sean Tucker, Christopher Frost, Gordon Liang, Andy Mumford, Alan Schaller and yourself (just to name a few) and we in the US are stuck with Jaren Polin, Tony Northrup, Angry Photographer, Ken Rockwell, Ted Forbes, Manny Ortiz & Peter McKinnon? ... they are more of actors than photographers.

      @MartinCastein  Рік тому +6

Ahhh I dont know! are we more sane. No one accused me of being sane before 🤪. I think in the UK people are more understated. It would be almost rude to be enthusiastic about anything hahahaha.

I fell for the mirrorless trap a little over a year ago and got myself a Canon RP while I was still a beginner. My photos became sharper w/ lower noise but my photography did not improve much. I discovered the Canon 5D a few months later and only then did my photography and understanding of basic principles like lighting & depth of field improve. I'm not trying to make this into a 5D shill comment but I guess my main point was your gear will only start to matter once you've invested the time into learning the art & skill involved in the practice.

I just ordered a 5d classic for 165$ from japan because I want the pentaprism back! Though EvF are excellent nowadays I really miss to see reality through a glass and not a representation of an image with all the settings. I studied photography years ago and learned with film and the 2000s digital and want to get that feeling back again. I just watched several of your videos during the weekend ❤.

Great viewpoint. I bought a 6D 2 years ago and now use it for equine photography, mainly eventing - jumping over fences, logs and hedges. Its not a sports camera choice, but the shots I've got after a few months practice have truly impressed me (and thats with a Tamron 70-210 F4). There's just something about the results that looks great. Also shoot with a 7D, which makes it easier, but prefer the 6D look.

You just clarified my ongoing dilemma between my love for my 5DII and lukewarm feeling on the EOSR! My photographs aren’t good enough yet to say one produces better images but I am able to notice the difference in the actual photography experience. Each has their own positives. If the 5DII had the focusing ability of the R, there would be no question for me. And that’s precisely why I’m constantly intrigued by the 5DIII. I blame Canon for crippling each system just enough to make no single body perfect! LOL but I’m just a hobbyist and get excited when my images don’t have motion blur!

Hi Keith! Hope you are well! hmmm the 5d mark iii might suit you then, it definitely improves the autofocus by a lot. Thats the main real upgrade, the ergonomics are best of the bunch too. lol too late, I listened to you🤣 you've inspired me to check out a D600 after watching your landscape video from awhile ago. I have got an absolute s$%t tonne of old ai and ais lenses, one thing i didnt know about the D600 automatic low shutter speed setting when in auto iso, is that lens focal length auto SS also considers any lens you have set up in non cpu lens data! My mind is blown. Literally just snapped on an ais 20mm, min SS is 1/30 with auto iso. Snapped on a ais 135mm and selected correct non cpu data, min speed is now 1/160 with corresponding auto iso. I cant wait to explore this D600 further. Another great video Martin, thanks!

Another sensible video, Martin. For 26 years during the film era, I used a Mamiya C330 twin-lens manual, non-VR camera and I took excellent photos and had plenty of business. I think I’m dating myself here but I actually owned 3 Canon DSLRs before the 5D came out: D60, 20D, & Rebel XT. I’ve shot primarily mirrorless since around 2014 or 2015 but I’m definitely enjoying shooting through an optical viewfinder again using a 5D. I still use mirrorless a lot but not for personal use, walks etc. I bought my first computer in 1988 and I’m tired of screens. That’s why I find DSLRs and film so refreshing.

I was a Canon 5D classic shooter. Unfortunately I had focus issues with my primary lens which is 24-70 2.8 mk1 (there is no micro adjustment function in the 5DMKI). I decided to move to the A7RII and it is wonderful camera, but...I always wanted to have 5DMKII or MKIII and even with Sony I was checking 2nd hand market from time to time. I have found one MKIII with a decent condition and I have bought it. My 24-70 got new life and I am so happy with my new "toy". This is strange but I really like that old DSLR cameras (size, sound, ergonomics). They give me some kind of pure photography without so much AI and other "helpers" improving imperfections of the photographer. It seems to be faster than my A7 in response, no lagging, no electronic thinking, no evf...just feels faster. But, generally speaking I have to say that the Canon is not a better camera than Sony, but gives so much fun to keep it and play.

the older DSLRs don't even come close when it comes to AF systems. For wildlife photographers, the eye AF is a must have. I've only just upgraded to a 7D II, and the AF is much improved over my 60D, but a R5 would offer a similar jump in AF performance from the 7D II as it was going from the 60D to the 7DII imho. Perhaps even more. Being able to see exposure in real time in the EVF is really nice too.

Advantages of mirrorless... can offer weight savings, better focus assist features when using adapted old manual lenses, which are also very useful for sight impaired photographers. Silent shutter for some wildlife scenarios including macro. Don't know if I am alone in this wish but I look forward to the day the use of mechanical shutters is banned in bird hides 🤞🤭.

Not sure if "mirrorless is always the best" . The most compact/lightweight? Absolutely, if you are willing to go say from FF DSLR to M43 mirrorless. The difference is significant.
Anyway, I think history is repeating itself. Before the 60's, pros use mirrorless (like rangefinders used by photojournalists, and most large format cameras used in studios area also mirrorless). Then Nikon F system arrived, and lots of photojournalists convinced SLR were capable for pro work, hence the migration. Rangefinders at that time were kinda limited to shorter primes. No macro work, no zoom lens, no really long lens etc etc. SLR didn't pose any of those limitations, hence they were the technically more versatile tool
Now in the digital era, mirrorless don't have those limitations anymore. So my question is: why keep the "extra" mirror box?

Canon ambassador Joe Buissink shoots in P Mode and when you listen why he shoots in P Mode it really makes sense. He does shoot I M mode when he uses flash.
I've heard even from some of the best wedding photographers screwing up at a wedding.

    • @gamingwithstand6886
      @gamingwithstand6886 Рік тому

Yeah I'm not into back button focus. But Joe Buissink not doing back button focus he's doing a AEL. So when he's shoot a portrait he's in single auto focus. When he has focus he hits the AEL to keep the exposure the same when he shoot a few stills. After releases the AEL button the meter goes back on. It's kind of like shooting in M mode he said. He came up with way of shooting because he was making mistakes.

What I do know about the latest mirrorless cameras are that they do cost a lot of money that I rather spend on glass. I know I will buy a Canon R when the price will be right, but right now I rather pick up lenses that I feel give my pictures that special look.

I don't care for mirrorless because I am not looking at reality when I shoot with one. I prefer DSLR or film because of the mirror, and its reflection of reality through the lens when I shoot. Frankly I prefer rangefinder to mirrorless. But that is just me of course.

It makes me laugh when people complain about older DSLRs... if you rememeber that 50-70 years ago photographers were already taking amazing shots of wildlife or sports and other fast moving subjects with full manual settings and focus by hand. No AF, no tracking, no autopexposure or unlimited memory cards, just a roll of film and skilled eye... It never stopped the great artists from creating masterpieces.

How do you expect anyone to focus on anything without 4D AI face tracking that can focus on a face from the back of someones head. Everyone knows everything shot pre-AI auto focus was completely out of focus.

Love your videos Martin. Can you tell me why you never really favor the 5D mark iii or iv when talking about your trusty choices? I know you mention color pallets on 5D classic going along with 6D, and you also mention 5D mark ii having its own earthy tones. Does mark iii and mark iv have a less favorable color pallet for you? Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Jon, sorry late reply, im not sure why but i just never liked them, they are fantastic cameras I just never enjoyed using them. Id say they were my least favourite cameras to actually use and I have no good reason to say that but its what I felt, so you should ignore my feelings on them.

Martin, as always a valuable take on the question DSLR vs Mirrorless.
After your presentation of the 5D Classic - ua-cam.com/video/ph0CwbOx7Us/v-deo.html purchased one earlier to add to the existing APS-C and really enjoying just taking photographs.
Yes, the additional weight of the body is noticeable especially on a long day’s shooting, but nothing to onerous. And what are camera straps for, if not to take some of the load?
The 5DC is no sports photography tool, and misses some of the features of the newer camera.. but that basic functionality is taking me back to the days of shooting on film and slide just without the hassle of relying on third party developers and printers or having to use a darkroom.

Thanks for this very informative video Martin.
Is there any reason that you don't mention the Canon 6d MK ii ? I couldn't find any videos that you've done about it.
It's got the face tracking in live view, which is great for shooting wide open apertures, along with the flip out screen.
Or is it because it doesn't provide that 'unique look' like the other cameras ?
    Thanks.

I've got the opportunity to purchase a used lens that I want at less than half the price if it were brand new.

What about crop vs fullframe? Can you make similar video please. I use Canon 250D and 7D mark ii, upgrading to fullframe is expensive but time to time feel like buying older fullframes and then reminding myself, lenses are more expensive than them older fullframe bodies. Right now using 17-50 sigma 2.8 and 50mm 1.8.

@@MartinCastein I like shooting day/night street photographies, day/night potraits, landscapes and cities. I once got a little taste of 5D mark ii and did street photographies with 50mm 1.8 and it was majestic. That 3D feeling and good image quality.
Since then, I dreamed of at least 5D mark iii or 6D mark I with 24-70 2.8 or 24-105 f4 at the least. But I also feel like I should focus on clicking a great story instead of dreaming of gears . But I again thought of fullframe while watching this video because all these majestic pictures are from a fullframe. It is too tempting hehe.

Photography specs have plateaued out since the DSLR days. New models of mirrorless cameras are chasing video specs. Of course one can get better photos with old DSLR camera if one knows what he is doing compared to a newbie with high end mirrorless.
