I've shot SLRs for four decades, but recently sold all my DSLR bodies and have switched to mirrorless with a Canon R5 and R6, and not looking back. Been using EF to RF adaptors with no issues and gradually adding RF lenses and selling off EF glass. Love the improvements in autofocus and seeing the exposure previewed in the EVF. The RF bodies have been just as reliable as my 5D mk IV and mk III.

Exactly the same thing here. Had a cheap T1i in 2010 as my first DSLR, 5D MKII in 2012 then a 6D and a R6 12 months ago and wow... It's a major game changer and absolute night and day difference, I'm never gonna look back even if it would be 50% cheaper.
I'm only pissed at the R6 being only 20MP which was fine 10 years ago when I had my 6D and 4K wasn't a thing yet but now it's like bare minimum and hard to justify at 3500$CAD.

Over the last couple of years, I've traded or sold all of my (Nikon) DSLR cameras and lenses (except one, the 200-500) and am using the Nikon Z6 II and Z7, along with all "Z" lenses. Shooting mostly landscapes and wildlife, my results are equal to my previous DSLRs, (D810 and D500) and in many cases, better. The new lenses (even the "kit") lenses, are superior in focusing speed, close-focus capability, edge-to-edge sharpness, and as a bonus, are a bit lighter and smaller. Looking forward to the future! :)

David, good comparison here for Alicia's question, thank you for the depth of your answer.
    1. I have found the 360°/3D YT videos to be distracting and have to pause them often to re-focus on the content. One fellow I follow was a little grumpy when I commented this in reaction to his question to viewers, "How do you like my 360° YT videos?" 🥴 You're trying to keep your video short, talking fast, and while I might have an interest in a side view of your shoot, there is really no time to look at it and keep up. Know what I mean?
    2. As a hobbyist, my cost-efficient D-7500 DSLR and 18-300mm zoom are just fine, thank you, and produce amazing shots. (Key word being "hobbyist"). My 2nd is a pocket-friendly Sony DSC-RX100M3 Zeiss 24-70mm Zoom. Never say never but I don't see me in line for a mirrorless. 😊

Unless one needs a lens faster than f1.4, or shooting in a concert, museum, or library where any noise may ruin the settings, or primarily using the device as a video camera (i.e., with lots of cross-frame motion tracking or feature recognition for AF), or relying on the in-body image stabilization (i.e., using lenses without such function), one has no reason to abandon DSLR. On the other hand, the DSLR offers optical view finder (for better motion capture in terms of timing, because of no digital processing lag), DoF preview (i.e., at smaller apertures like f/8 when focusing at f/1.4), and much longer long battery life (5-10 times more). So for still photography, the debate is meaningless. Mirrorless systems are catering the market transition to more and more video production (the auto focusing for still images in DSLRs is already very mature, even for fast moving objects). The favor for the mirrorless systems may also arise from the habits formed by cellphone photography (people enjoy point and shoot on touch screens) -- the familiarity make some fail to appreciate the advantages of optical view finders.

I'm definitely glad I chose to start off on mirrorless. I find I can adapt to changing conditions particularly lighting much faster.
I went to photograph lightening this past weekend. I dialed in my settings ( I was able to pull off on the side of the road and set my tripod up in my passenger seat) and as the storm rolled further in my live view histogram was getting significantly darker (as well as looked darker) and I was able to adjust my exposure quickly.

That's the kind of thing I was hoping David was going to cover. The tech I can find anywhere online. What catches me up is taking a new camera/camcorder in the field and finding out what's a PITA to do and what's a prayer answered. Performance photography/videography, or especially audio I find, there are no do-overs.

From the perspective of the camera industry mirrorless cameras are cheaper to make, so they make a bigger profit from selling it with some software feature implemented into the EVF. From a photographer's perspective: What you see in the EVF is just a video representation of your final RAW shot, not an exact 1 to 1 representation of your final shot. But of course what you see in the SLR viewfinder is not what you get, either (even if you press your depth-of-field-preview button, what most people rarely do). I just love looking a my scene directly better than looking at a tiny video screen... (But of course compact cameras and smartphone cameras are mirrorless, too. So people have gotten used to it, like to fast food...)

I started my photography career in 1985 with a Canon AE-1 I bought at a pawnshop stall wrapped in the original box never opened. I used it daily until I had to put photography on the back burner because of family and job choices.
Finally sold it because it was collecting dust. Two years ago my beautiful bride gave me her credit card for my birthday and said don’t go crazy, so I went to my local mom and pop camera shop and picked up an RP and several lenses. I love mirrorless!!!!! It’s compact and gives me incredible images. I still think about picking up an AE-1 for film but I’d probably just use the RP 90% of the time.

I would actually be concerned with being distracted by all the cool scenery and 'futzing' about with looking around and losing concentration on what YOU are saying. Again, personally speaking only, I watch your videos for what you teach us and not so much as to where you are in your surroundings UNLESS it is pertinent to your lesson or subject matter.

In response to your video, I have a Canon SL2 DSLR and with the kit lens (RF 18 to 55mm) it is very light and compact. It would be even more compact with a 24 or 50mm lens. It is probably equal or lighter to the mirrorless camera you had.
Also, I shoot a lot of portraits in the studio and I use a Canon 5DIII DSLR. I use flash and set the camera settings so that my exposure is black and all ambient light is eliminated. This works fine with DSLR as I am looking at my subject optically. My experience with mirrorless cameras (Canon SX60HS) is when they are set for eliminating the ambient light, the viewfinder is black and not useful for framing my subject. This feature is useful when taking photos in normal light, but not so much with studio flash photography. I have not used a modern high end mirrorless camera like the R5, but I would assume that they would operate in a similar manner to my SX60HS.

I'm using a 6D Mark II right now and love it. But I've been debating getting an R5 or R6 as I'm shooting more video lately. Especially at weddings to create those highlight videos and do kind of a hybrid shooting. With the IBIS and lebs stabilization those mirrorless bodies are just amazing for video. And with much higher resolution capabilities in video as well. But I don't think I'll get rid of my 6D Mark II quite yet. It's an extremely capable camera. Especially when shooting the night sky or the Aurora like I recently shot on my channel.

may i answer to the question, which camera is better for concerts?
I shoot a lot of club photography and concerts and most of the time, the light is poor and the only reliable focus solution is AF assistant of the transmitter. I shoot with Nikon D750 which is proven to be low light beast. With mirrorless systems you can't use transmitters AF assistant and if the light is poor, autofocus slows down significantly. I gave a chance to my Z6 II with f1.4 lenses and doesn't match the speed of my old D750 with 3D autofocus.
The other reason to think about DSLR, over mirrorless, is because of scene lighting effects. If there are lasers, you have to be very cautious. A friend of mine, replaced two times camera sensor after laser hit the sensor. In mirrorless, you don't have a protection of the mirror and there is less chance of laser hitting the sensor.
Best thing of Mirrorless is "what you see is what you get".

I switched to Mirrorless cameras 5 years ago starting with the Sony a7Sii. Feel in love with Sony's A7Rii when it first came out in 2015 after playing with it. The LIVE view, EVF, silent shooting, video features, 5-axis stabilization, and so much more made me switch to mirrorless. Yea, I did had some doubts that mirrorless may not be the future of cameras since they were still behind DSLR in every way. But once Sony released their a9 and a7Riii in 2017 with huge improvements especially with their autofocusing systems, I knew mirrorless is the future of camera technology. Glad I made the switched and never look back.
For sure Mirrorless tech are just going to improve so much more in the next coming years. Likely mirrorless could get rid of the mechanical shutter and it becomes a shutterless camera which means Global shutter will reign supreme. Then OLED touch screens becomes the norm on camera and the Operating Systems will be more interactive like using smartphone's OS. Let's see what the Sony a7IV will give us tomorrow when Sony shows off the camera. So exciting!!!

I chose Canon back in the '70's because of their glass and have never been seduced away from the brand. My last breath and shutter release will be with a Canon. (smile) There's nothing like looking through glass. (L lenses, baby!) I've looked through mirrorless bodies but hated looking at video screens. And since I have no need for 30 frames per second ( I rarely used the high speed on my F1n's motor drives. ), my cache of 15 FD lenses, my 5D Mk IV with it's 7 EF lenses and a 7D for my 'beat around', the 'benefits' of mirrorless are lost on me. I agree that those seriously getting into professional photography should start with mirrorless because it's the future... Starting photography to learn and see at what level you wish to pursue? A used DSLR and a couple of lenses. [my 2 cents]

therefore I cannot afford to use a R5 cos it would probably cost me a whole year's salary and the lenses are a whole new different set of cost.
There mirrorless videos are so sharp that I have to add in a mist filter to lower the sharpness.

You're likely not going to get a lot back for resell value because your camera is a DSLR. I'm shooting mostly on my EOS R instead of my 5Dmk4. Because I get more accurate exposure and focusing results on the fly with my EOS R in Fv mode compared with auto ISO & Expand AF point on my 5Dmk4.

I'm shooting mirrorless with some Nikon cameras--mainly macro wildlife. The worst thing about a mirrorless camera is the naked sensor.

A timely video thanks for sharing. Ive been scraping by for 8 years getting the max I can from my trusty budget canon700d crop sensor with a few budget lenses and at a recent Hair Salon International Event with opportunities to shoot with models, I defntly felt like an amateur surrounded by guys with massive lenses, multiple camera bodies, mix of DSLR and mirrorless and can guess all were getting better shots than I could achieve. I did the beest I could but technical abilities and experience aside, the gear does make a difference. My shots were blurry and super noisy as despite seemingly bright conditions to the eyes, my camera and lens needed 1600 and 3200 iso - my camera is noisy from 400 ISO. So Im on the fence to stick with a budget DSLR like Canon 90Dor 850D or try to spend more on a mirrorless like Canon RP budget mirrorless - I shoot video as well and I know 90D has non crop 4k while RP is cropped - so hard to decide I dont want to make a mistake

Don’t waste money on 90D. I’ve bought this camera a year ago being so excited by the review on UA-cam. I’m disappointed with it. It too noisy even on 800 ISO so would have same feelings you had on hair salon event. It’s not bad in video mode but you can find a better option among other brands or same Canon but mirrorless cameras. When I did my choice I was bound by the number of EF lenses I have and did not want to sell them as it would be too costly to move to RF mount. You seems don't have such problem. If I were you I would look at mirror less for sure as it a better platform from long run investments into lenses. Besides you will have up to date equipment that will serve you years ahead. And please don't buy camera you can afford now. If you're seriously in photograph try to get camera a level up. You will master you craft quickly and won't stack with gear that limits you.

@@The9q11 excellent advice, especially for modeling, where higher pixels might be demanded more often than other genres. But for most other needs 20 mp is more than enough (one of, imo greatest photographers today Jay Maisel, shot most of his work on 12MP, selling huge prints, starting at $1500 (that's just for the regular editions). One of the main things in photography imo, is timing. An OVF is inherently superior at that (not just EVF lag, but also shutter-lag, wake from sleep etc , Only now with the release of the R3 they're getting close to that (and apparently close enough). But at that price you get only weather sealing, no ruggedness at all (sliding card-door and weak flippy-screen, especially with all the weight), which is imo unacceptable at that price.
Therefore it seems clear to me that we'll have to wait for the mark II (except if you've LOTS of money and willing to take a change with the R3 now (buy two) which would be greatly appreciated as a donation towards the development of the next generation).
So I would say: find out if you NEED (if the industry demands that from you at your stage), for the next 2-4 years more than 20MP files.
If not get a fully proven 100% reliable, extremely fast reacting (it's not just about the fps) workhorse second hand for the same price as a first trial version, lacking (and lagging) weak build R5...
Which would of course be the 1dxIII with BEAUTIFUL EF glass (at more than half the price!!!) that resolve perfectly up to 20-24MP (mark II and III lenses even more). That way you'll have something reliable with many more lenses to start experimenting with. Than, IF many clients start demanding more than 45MP, there's where the RF glass will really shine and be worthwhile investing in (and you'll know exactly what glass you need), with properly working bodies for all conditions, without any lag and gorgeous EVF (it has to be fun too!). Soon!!! Good luck!

And if your funds are way lower than that, look into a 5DIV. (It's just that the 1dxIII is way more advanced AF wise, up to par to the best available mirrorless today, so you won't feel lacking vs the mirrorless options if you want to focus with high precision wide open, with razor thin DOF (starts to become a really boring look imo, but to each his own, otherwise many other DSLR are available)
Also the Nikon D750 could be a option (or better, D780 if you want a truly modern DSLR with all the mirrorless features, similar to the 1DXIII in that regard)

For me its not mirrorless v DSLR at all, it changes so much camera to camera. My main shooter is the Z6 II but the focus, face AF and subject tracking is just awful, my D500 is a million times better at getting focus reliably. However on the flip side the A7 III I have has great fast AF and face detection.
So for me its A7 over D500 but D500 over Z6 II for AF rather than mirrorless v DSLR.
I know at gig the D500 and A7 will find the drummer in the dark at the back of the stage. The Z6 II will more than likely miss completely not being able to see him or find him very slowly on the 3rd attempt when you've missed the shot you wanted.

This is funny. I use actually both. It isn't preference case more than it is what I do with it. I have a Canon 6D full frame, and a Sony a6400, and RX10 and a DJI Pocket2. Lastly a 4K professional camcorder. My Smartphone is an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I prefer the DSLR for my stills and the mirrorless or my Pocket2 and the camcorder for my video. Why does he say LED screen,I think he means LCD. If I am shooting something fast, I am probably doing video anyway. As value goes, DSLR is tough to beat. Full mature lens catalog and 3rd party is excellent. No adapting needed. The Z family does not have 3rd party support. I want a Z5 at some point, but that is delaying the party for me. So I am not necessarily what is the newest, as what will work for me in a systems and use case.

There are basically two reasons I'm experimenting with mirrorless cameras: First of all, it's the future. More R&D money is being put into mirrorless than SLRs and someday these SLRs are going to be dinosaurs. Second, I shoot a lot of wildlife--birds and other nervous critters. Mirrorless cameras are silent; no point in scaring away the critters you are trying to shoot.

I really WANT a fast focusing mirrorless but right now I still have so much to learn. It will happen one day, just not anytime soon. Pentax user since 1984. I have a lot invested in lenses and to go mirrorless would require changing everything. Also
When I do change it will likely be Nikon, I mean I do like Seth Better LOL!! #adorama #CreateNoMatterWhat

Someday when the tech is matured i will invest in a mirrorless. Atm i do not see doing that. But i thank to people who spend their money in mirrorless. Maybe that way they will invest the money and mature this technology. Using a Nikon D850, and i only use prime lenses in my work. I would buy another D850 before buying a mirrorless. That's for sure. I am not a nikon or canon fan. I have both. But atm i just need the D850. It does it all, with no problems. I do not shoot action, so for me is more than enough.

  • @coolcat23

"Same image quality.", well there are mirrorless cameras that produce so-called striping and/or banding due to the PDAF-sensels on the sensor. The PDAF-sensels (those used for AF) can typically not be used for imaging, or at leat not without compromises. This is the reason why Panasonic does not use on-sensor PDAF in their mirrorless cameras but an alternative contrast-based system (DFD). DSLRs don't have these issues (unless they try to cater to video too much and have PDAF-sensels on the sensor to support AF during video). FWIW, DSLR batteries might be larger, but mainly they are not drained by constantly having to run the sensor and the EVF.

ffs. how about the fact that in an EVF you are seeing the past?
with 3 exemptions, or maybe 4 now that the R3 is out, there are only 4 bodies that can track well enough or better then a dslr, the EVF lag is a huge thing.

honestly, not really interested in 3D video... 3D rendering where we could Walk around the shoot and see things from our perspective... yes... but UA-cam doesn't support that. The problem with 3D video is that it is from 1x 3-axis point in space and all you can change is the tilt/angle/etc. not the location in space.
