Don’t hold your breath. UH Manoa disappeared from their “plan” over 17 years ago. “The plan also includes $2.7 billion for mass-transit projects, including $2.5 billion for a fixed-rail system between Kapolei and Manoa.” Star Bulletin 2/19/2006 “Although the vision of rail that captured the public’s imagination was a 28-mile line running from Kapolei to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, it turns out that the city can only afford to build a smaller section of that line, 20 miles long. The City expects a 20-mile transit line to cost $3.6 billion. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣” Honolulu magazine 3/1/2007
That is a very good idea. How many students are in Oahu schools? Bring in a little revenue for the field trip. Like it. Teach the kids about proper planning and what then what happens when it is done wrong.
We already had the perfect study of rail and if it would be really used. Just look at Pearlridges rail line. That was always MT too. So what made our politicians think this would be a good idea? Check the bank accounts, someone made out for sure... I believe anyway...
They're lying! It cost $3,333,333.00 per rider. That's $10,000,000,000 (billion) divided by 3000 riders per day!!! Keep supporting the criminals Hawaii!!!
Train wreck. Imagine if 10% of what was waisted on this train wreck was spent on The bus we could have had a world class bus system. New buses, 24 hour service, new routes that go where people want to go, etc, etc.
Still no bathrooms, nowhere to park, ends a mile from kamakana alii, politcians were all smiles and picture taking when it opened, why dont they take pictures of them on empty trains🤷♂️ another waste of our money.
I would have taken it to and from the airport during my vacation in February if it was running 🤬🤬They should have started with the Ala Moana Center to Airport sector first, not last. I
Like singapore, put commerce at the train station. some singapore MRT stations are like malls- restaurants, shopping. make the rail not just transp but a destination
I think all the negativity in these comments is premature. This is a long-term project and only once the rail goes at least to Downtown will I be ready to decide if this was wise. I'm hopeful!
Truly long term. Was supposed to be completely done by 2019. The rail to Ala Moana will likely be 2030 plus. The infrastructure will have aged a lot and repairs costly. By that time estimated maintenance will be at 100 million dollars a year.
I got IBS, imagine the rails electricity turns off and all the kapuna needs to poop or pee. The rail is rocky and bumpy sideways, it incites my bowel movements.
Hawaii Tourism team should do something. The views you see riding the Skyline is something you wont see in a tour bus or even if you are driving around. Plus they can use the pass everywhere which could bring in more revenue. How many tourist ride the rail? They are already there at Pearl Harbor; a quarter mile walk up the street and they are at the terminal and ready to go. But some bathrooms need to be put in. This could be a huge draw back especially for our elderly riders. No more place to go no kine go ride the rail. Too bad yeah?
Using the pass more will only bring in a limited amount of revenue for the bus and the rail fail. For seniors, disabled, and medicare, there is a yearly cap of $45. For handi-van card holders, the yearly cap is $35. For adults the monthly cap is $80, for youth it’s $40, and there is a daily cap of $7.50 for everybody.
Until it goes airport & Waikiki it will never make money. That should have been the first track. How many people took off with millions of dollars that were involved with the rail? Plus, 97 MILLION per year in operating costs and no restrooms 🙄🤬😳
It will never make money. hart’s goal is to have fares pay 25-30% of operations and maintenance expense, but they’ve already admitted it will fall short.
thats what you get when you build something that is useless because ot doesnt go to where people needs to go… you guys just built and open it for the sake of opening the darn thing…
it ultimately comes down to the Human algorithms. it's a lot like the Toronto Subway Extension Northwest. Ridership between Sheppard West and Vaughan Metro Centre seemed really low, BUT overtime it increased
guess again. “Segment 2 of operations from Makalapa Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam station to Kahauiki Middle Street - Kalihi Transit Center station, is scheduled to open 2025.” honolulu dot gov Of course the original opening date to the stadium was supposed to be 2016 and it was supposed to be open all the way to Ala Moana by 1/30/2020.
I've spoken to a lot of people that work at Pearl Harbor or nearby. So I ask them about their thoughts and why they don't utilize it. One of the main reasons is actually getting to their office. Sure it saves them time but once of the rail, no way to get to the office on base. They have to walk quite some distance so it becomes undoable in their eyes. Again a discount to entice them into usage. Maybe not every year but at least until the state sees ridership go up. Just thinking out loud. I always thought there was a bus route on base. Maybe not.
if it doesn't help the traffic problem at all it will be a huge problem. Likely still going to get traffic even after its finished. Traffic will get even worst if they keep building more homes in Kapolei. I assumed it was to adress the traffic issue.
The Hawaii rail system is a nightmare the people of Hawaii can`t wake up from. Now you hear the HART leaders are fighting among themselves in a public meeting. just short of scratching each others eyes out. That tell a lot of what`s really going on behind closed doors.
if they really wanted kids to ride it, they should have put rail stations near Waipahu High School and Waipahu Intermediate... i thought at least Waipahu High School students would have easy access to the LCC station when it opened, but that is simply not the case. we instead get the Waiawa station that drops off people in the middle of the busiest part of kam highway, which is literally a stone's throw away from the LCC station. 🤡🤡
isn't that crazy?! i also noticed this. are they thinking that students could use buses to get the the rail stations? the gov has POOR judgement on their riders/users-- they needed to make it as easy as possible for students to access if they wanted high student ridership. students have jobs, studying, & places to be. this is most definitely the case for working commuting kupunas too.
I was fortunate that I could use it for my commute, but the fact that I can’t get to the Ala Moana or the airport really limited its practicality beyond that. The train is actually very nice and is quite fast during perk traffic hours. I wish it went to the mall in Kapolei. The kapolei stop just kind of maroons you.
I thought you urban cheerleaders thought a rail system was necessary instead of cars? Now it’s a waste of tax paying dollars at our hands and people will continue to use vehicles to get around Hawaii!
skyline is fudging the numbers, it's more like 15 riders a day. I drive to work daily and see NO ONE on that thing in the morning, same for the afternoon, zero people on board.
locals: "we are not using it. we don't want it." hawaii: "You're crazy for thinking that. We need this, and it will be used." Gaslighting 101. Not the first time HI has done this. Look at Lahaina. We officially have a toxic relationship with our gov 💛
Yeah it sucks that they built it where they did, but now they should just be funded to push through to the airport and downtown as soon as possible. This seems like, it would be a great type of system to build in other US cities and I really hope the poor planning of this project doesn’t poison the well on elevated automated metros in America.
Oh yeah, off subject here but traffic in town is getting crazy. I've noticed that a lot of traffic goes into our private schools. What do we have here in a five mile radius? Something like 5 private schools with another 5 public schools thrown in. And now we are building high rises in this area. hmmmmm, are our roads really ready for this? We will be driving at 5 MPH in a few years with so. many cars on the roads. The public schools aren't really the cause as most students walk or bus in. Private schools are different. Sometimes kids are going to different schools for what ever reason so both parents are driving, we got kids coming in from all over the island not just in that neighborhood like public schools work. These schools need to be working on a plan to help Oahu citizens a better quality of life during traffic hour. Do they have buses that bring in the kids? Are these schools at a max of students or is enrollment going up and up and up? Oh yeah, and University of Hawaii too. All start at the same time every day M-F... No wonder traffic is so nice when the private schools go on break. REALLY NICE!!!
I am afraid to ride it after hearing reports from people who were involved in the construction of the rail how they took our tax paying dollars and "cut corners" whenever they could. It is deplorable to know as taxpayers one of the biggest highway robberies happened in broad daylight right in front of our faces and on our dime. Ridership will improve when the project is completed but there will another issue this project is going to ask tax payers to pay for probably the lawsuits that will one day arise from using rusted rebar in the rail related concrete construction among other things that will surface.
Well, the whole point of a boondoggle is to spend lots of money for little utility…so Skyline is a big success based on what they were aiming for. How it doesn’t go to and from Waikiki and does not give commuters a better option than driving is laughable…that was the whole point of the project, no?
Who ever baught this rail out is just sad and not smart at all they forgot the fact that people gata walk far to getbto a station and theres no parking for people s cars 😂😂😂😂😂😂 rite on japanese....
Create job by tearing down the rail to build artificial reef to combat climate change. All that money would have been better used to come up with a permanent solution to the Kahekili Hwy. from Kaneohe to Laie, which is being eroded away.
"Hopefully it trends upwards"....Are you kidding.... your yearly numbers will and can predict a 3 & 5 year FORECAST....That NOW, sounds like it is MUCH NEEDED ....
That won’t work to any significant extent. “(DTS chief) Morton detailed how DTS will pay Hitachi Rail $52 million for operation and maintenance, and roughly $96.7 million when all related costs are allocated. Those costs include security, energy, elevator and escalator maintenance, fare collection, software and hardware, station and grounds maintenance, compliance oversight, consultant support, parts and other services, as well as city staff.” SA 4/23/2023 Hitachi has a 13.25 year $918 million contract for some of the operations and maintenance expense, and they get that even if the trains don’t move an inch. We could possibly save some on the variable expenses if we shut it down, but our city councilors, mayor, DTS staff, etc are not intelligent enough/too beholden to moneyed interests to do that.
Everyone, including the blind, deaf and dumb expected this... except the experts and officials.
I mean c’mon they should’ve started Ala Moana to the airport first. Then extended to the west side. Everyone in this project should be fired
You are absolutely correct. Just the tourist traffic back and forth would have helped.
it’s because the skyline was built in suburban or completely rural areas, once the airport to Waikiki branch opens ridership will increase
Hurry the F up and get it to UH! Only then you will have ridership. You have this skyline going to nowhere meaningful yet.
Don’t hold your breath. UH Manoa disappeared from their “plan” over 17 years ago.
“The plan also includes $2.7 billion for mass-transit projects, including $2.5 billion for a fixed-rail system between Kapolei and Manoa.” Star Bulletin 2/19/2006

@@gsn794 Das why hard
Expect it to go even lower.
DOE should make riding the Skyline a field trip for elementary students. The field trip lesson should be government waste.
That is a very good idea. How many students are in Oahu schools? Bring in a little revenue for the field trip. Like it. Teach the kids about proper planning and what then what happens when it is done wrong.
it already is a field trip, Honouliuli Middle and Kalihi Kai Elementary have gone to the operations control center
They did that at the beginning to bump the ridership numbers lmao...
The Wow factor is. Wow, what a waste of taxpayer's dollars.
I forgot this thing existed, other than the disruptive construction.
“Skyline “ should be renamed “Sinkhole “ - cause that’s where our taxes will be going to for decades.
We already had the perfect study of rail and if it would be really used. Just look at Pearlridges rail line. That was always MT too. So what made our politicians think this would be a good idea? Check the bank accounts, someone made out for sure... I believe anyway...
One of the biggest blunder in all of Hawaii’s history.
They're lying! It cost $3,333,333.00 per rider. That's $10,000,000,000 (billion) divided by 3000 riders per day!!! Keep supporting the criminals Hawaii!!!
thats just the minimum. you didnt even factor in the operation and maintenance cost yet. YIKES
Train wreck. Imagine if 10% of what was waisted on this train wreck was spent on The bus we could have had a world class bus system. New buses, 24 hour service, new routes that go where people want to go, etc, etc.
Give credit where credit is due.Ben Cayetano warned of this. And was ridiculed. He was right and mufi ,caldwell, carlyle. Were all lying.
The train to nowhere I want to go…
Must be nice to spend money that isn't yours, not keep to budgets or deadlines and still keep your job.
lol the rail is dumb! Waste money!
Still no bathrooms, nowhere to park, ends a mile from kamakana alii, politcians were all smiles and picture taking when it opened, why dont they take pictures of them on empty trains🤷♂️ another waste of our money.
5 of the stations have park and ride
Disaster that no one will admit. Executives keep quitting.
Why did they do the second phase 1st from say Pearl Ridge to Waikiki? There would have been more interest.
There’s a WOW factor. 😂 😂 😂
What a joke!!!
I would have taken it to and from the airport during my vacation in February if it was running 🤬🤬They should have started with the Ala Moana Center to Airport sector first, not last. I
I predict in less than a decade the trains will no longer run and all the infrastructure will be nothing more than a canvass for graffiti artists.
I ride the rail everyday and I don't believe they're taking into account during those months It was freezing cold and raining 🥶
Shut it down already
Like singapore, put commerce at the train station. some singapore MRT stations are like malls- restaurants, shopping. make the rail not just transp but a destination

most riders are in Honolulu, where it doesnt go.
Starts too late, can't use it to go work, ends too early, cant use it to go home,no toilets, something always broken, the list is endless.

There are better options to improve traffic at a small fraction of what the honolulu money pit cost but it wouldn't line pockets of corrupt officials.
Officials are idiots. Biggest waste

Excited for Segment 2, fingers crossed it opens on schedule.
thats what you get when you build something that is useless because ot doesnt go to where people needs to go… you guys just built and open it for the sake of opening the darn thing…
A big waste of tax payers money
It is a loser system and waste of money since it's start.
If you want more ridership, extend that shit!
Hawaii lose money but good poke
These fail everywhere. Thanks democrats.
It cost more than $50 per person. More like $75-$80.
The train to nowhere!!!!!!!😒Thanks Mufi!!!!! The taxes will oppress generations to come.
Drop the fare, to expensive. Without island people spending money, Hawaii economy falls, skyline fails.
Bruh just set everybody up with a personal Uber. Cheaper than $50
Cut your losses shut it down before it get worse bigger problems
it ultimately comes down to the Human algorithms. it's a lot like the Toronto Subway Extension Northwest. Ridership between Sheppard West and Vaughan Metro Centre seemed really low, BUT overtime it increased

Spring 2045 😂🎉
I have a feeling they will raise your car registration soon. 😂😂
It costs $50 per ride? So why not just close it until it goes somewhere people need to go?
I've spoken to a lot of people that work at Pearl Harbor or nearby. So I ask them about their thoughts and why they don't utilize it. One of the main reasons is actually getting to their office. I bet Super Ferry would have been more popular and who knows could have been used to evacuate Lahaina. Just saying.
I thought..."If you build it, they will come!"😂 I guess it's not like the movie! LOL waste of money
Cause it doesn’t go anywhere
Open the Airport Station Already
Hana Butta all over that's why 😂😂😂😂😂
Ben Cayetano, Panos Prevadorous, and Frank Lavoie. Anyone remember any of them?
skyline is fudging the numbers, it's more like 15 riders a day. I drive to work daily and see NO ONE on that thing in the morning, same for the afternoon, zero people on board.

Who really thought folks would give up the freedom of driving their own vehicle?
I have for the past year
One out of a multitude
I cannot believe that the Train to Nowhere has few riders.
Hurry up and open at the airport. Then you’ll see a jump. Right now, its destinations are not where most need to go.
Yeah it sucks that they built it where they did, but now they should just be funded to push through to the airport and downtown as soon as possible. Skyline to.heaven
Even if they offer free rides people still won’t ride the rail
What will their excuse be when ridership doesn't improve when the honolulu money pit is completed way after spring 2025?
The trains are starting to sound like they need to grease up the wheels.
Who's BRIGHT idea was this ??!

The wiki wiki bus does more 🤣
The only skyline I know is the R34 GTR Skyline.
if it doesnt go to UH u not gonna get plenty rides. UH is the best bet, all those college kids can save gas
No... say-it-ant-so😅😅😅😅😅😅 shocker

Being saying it was a waste of taxpayers money stride idea from the get go amusement ride Wow 😢😢😢
is it state owned business?
city and county of Honolulu
rather ride the jenline
It really does need to go where people need to get to. I'd waste an extra hour just to take it for part of my commute.
Just turn it off and walk away….
Pure money grab
