I just went from a Mustang bass to the Guild Starfire 1 bass. I fell in love with the look of it in Pelham Blue, and the fat, woody sound is exactly what I wanted my Mustang to sound like with Dunlop flats on it. Really a wonderful instrument, and blown away with the build quality for only $669.
I love how he said this bass was in a future video in his bass collection video almost a year ago, either way it’s a cool bass, kinda looks like a Jack Cassidy with Hofner pickups
Look at your thumb when you hold the bass up by the neck. I can see where the marketing boys got their inspiration. ;) Anyhoo, lovely lovely bass! I already own a (very) short scale Ibanez Mikro Bass which is amazing and versatile. But if my wife ever lets me shop for a second bass, this would definitely be on my short list!
Just got this bass! And it’s really good especially for the price! Slapped some TI flats on it, and did an immediate setup (truss rod adjustment and lowered the bridge height and now plays good. Out of the box though ,it had high action probably from different climates (I reside in Canada) creating a bow on the neck. Anyhow I totally agree that the tuners are in need of a replacement! Great video and thanks for showcasing it!
I bought one second hand for hardly €100. Got flatwounds on it which improved the sound considerably. It had fret buzz which I fixed with a simple 1/4 turn of the truss rod. It's a very well balanced bass with no neck dive at all and it's pretty lightweight too. The body is very thin. Both playing sitting as standing up it's one of the most comfortable basses I ever had in my hands. The tuners are indeed not top quality, not a disaster but I do consider replacing them. The pickups are ok, not super top class but not low budget style either. The bindings between the neck and the fretboard are quite sharp so the bottom edge of the neck may hurt your fretting hand after some playing. Anyway it's certainly a bass worth buying.
Dear Pat, thanks for this video. I had a chance to actually try this bass and I must say it's a way above its price category (with exception of tuners). The sound is really interesting, in a good way. PUs work great, bringing the best of hollow body bass sound. I have also Jolana Studio hollow body bass made in Czechoslovakia in 1968, and the dry sound is pretty similar to this HB 60, but the rest of the sound sweetness comes from PUs. I think that you would be positively surprised with this Jolana coming with Czech Tesla branded PUs form the 43 years past. Now I regret that I let this HB 60 slide out of my hands, and at the moment there is no even one piece to buy in Serbia. All the best pat and all of your viewers.
Hey Patrick! Have you heard of a Bass/Guitar brand called “Vintage”? They make a jazz style (VJ74) , Pbass style (V4) and a stingray style (V96). The materials seem quality and they look great. The price range for all the basses are between 400-500 and I’d really like to see reviews of them especially from this channel.
These were so tempting but hard to find a good review when I was shopping for a semi hollow. Went with an Ibanez AGB200. May have to get one of these too!

Some bass players wrap their thumb (like guitarists do) over the bottom strings, hence "thumb" inlays :) Absolutely love the look and sound of this one it's beautiful!
That's not why they chose these inlays. Like 1% of bassists play incorrectly with the thumb over the fretboard. Do you really think they'd design their only semi-hollow bass with you in mind? Think, McFly, think!
I want a hollow body bass so badly someday but I have to resist temptation of falling into shiny object syndrome. Also what do you use for the distortion?
Great video. Very informative. I have been doing my research on this particular bass for a while and will be definitely getting one real soon. Your video sealed the deal. What would be your recommendation for tuning keys? Also with the style my band is headed for, this bass with GHS Strings Medium Scale flatwounds is going to be perfect. Thanks again for the video!!!
In regard to the 'thumb inlays', I picture Phil Lynott, who frequently had his left thumb over the neck when playing. I'm guessing he did it to mute the E and A strings.
Great review! I wonder what the EQ on your amp was set to? Does the bass come with round wound strings? The bridge on this bass is a floating bridge because it is not fixed to the body. Intonation on a bridge like this is tricky, as you must slide the bridge up or down the body to adjust intonation. The inlays on the neck are probably called "thumb" because a player can wrap their thumb around the neck on the short scale bass. Overall this bass appears as an crazy value for the money and has great tone. I am getting one!
Interesting?! I feel the GAS building. I have heard some have had issues with semi-hollows being noisy or feeding back? Any issues? Definitely needs flats imo and maybe a felt pick? Nice review I just subbed!
Look at your thumb profile if you hold it where the top of your thumb nail is up against the nut you will see what I mean. Is the profile shape of a thumb so to speak. Great video debate sounded awesome keep it up.
Curious about Epiphone’s Jack Cassidy! My main machine is a Reverend Dub King which is more accurately a chambered body. Bartolini in the neck pickup (which is always soloed) and Jamerson set up.
I’m pretty sure they’re called thumb inlays because they sort of resembled the look of a guitar player, using the over the neck, thumb method for muting strings…
Can you play at home on the sofa without an amplifier? I would take it just to practice without connecting anything, but I don't know if the acoustic volume at least makes me understand which note I'm playing. In addition, the noise of the roundwounds could be even louder than the notes played, it is mandatory to put the flatwounds. I didn't want to buy a pure acoustic, too bulky, plus this I could also use it live, obviously amplified.
~$60 for shipping if I remember correctly. You can buy like 3 basses and that $60 shipping will cover all three of them. That's my experience at least getting them shipped to TX!
I don't know what the tariffs are for you guys, it's 6% of the value on string instruments imported into Canada, plus whatever brokerage fees. I got an Ibanez AEB8E, for around this price.
