Kinda regret trading mine in for a used Mexican P Bass (imo my Jack Cassidy bass cut through the mix way better when I would play with my group of musician buddies)
Missed one! Ibanez Artcore bass. I bought a beautiful red burst about 6 years ago. Looks fantastic, played like shite with the standard strings. I hated it for a year. Then I put chrome flats on it… what a transformation! Now it sounds fantastic, very warm - almost like an upright.
Finally there are some hollow body basses with proper bridges. I don't really like those bridges that the typical violin basses have. I want to be able to properly adjust the intonation at the bridge...
The Jack Casady Bass is still the best value bass on the market imo. I always bring that to sessions, and the sound guys always end up preferring that over expensive custom shop basses from other brands. Happens every time! :-) They put some magic in that pickup for sure.
I've got multiple semi and true hollow bodies, including a couple of antiques and a high-end boutique instrument. The Jack Casady is a fave, and unlike the vintage ones and the snob instruments, I don't worry too much when I play or transport it. Definitely a workhorse and in a good way.
Surprised how good the Epiphone Jack Casady sounds. It's like a P-bass in hollow-body form. And the switch seems like position 2 treble boost and position 3 lowpass filter or treble cut/mid boost (pretty decent cliff burton sound). That Epiphone sound in the B&G body shape would be killer.
Years ago I had the Gibson original version of this Jack Casady bass. Back then (early 70s) it was called the Les Paul Signature. It did indeed sound like a hollow P-bass and this Epiphone is a really close sound-a-like.
I went to Gibson Garage in Nashville this weekend and played several basses that just didn't work for me. Plugged in the JCS and fell in love. I must have that bass.
The Guild Starfire has a P-bass type pickup in the "correct" place, and supposedly sounds better than the Jack Cassidy bass, so I'm leaning towards it.
If i could “Like & Subscribe” a hundred times a day... I Would!!!! This is the best Andersons show by far. More, All About The Bass, please! Cheers guys
I love the Jack Casady... just got one myself. I put all of my basses away and have played this bass for 3 weeks straight. It almost seems like it has a natural growl. The dang hard cases tho... everywhere i looked they were on backorder. I kept checking back and found 1 in stock... ordered it and it came in today.
we need sound like Jefferson Airplane/Jack Cassady if we ever get sound like back, it's been an entire year and no sound like at all i'm starting to doubt that we'll ever get it back
Martin & Co makes a shorty semi-acoustic in this pricerange. I don't own one YET, but my buddy bought one when he stopped playing upright, and it is the best sounding bass (for jazz) I ever heard. Definitly check it out.
Great review. Thanks. What about the Epiphone Rivoli, Gibson Midtown (reissues of the legendary Gibson EB2?) …. I own two Gibson EB2 - 1968 and 1967. I bought a Waterstone semihollowbody to take places I wasn’t sure were safe enough for such rare vintage instruments. So the resurgence of semihollowbody basses had really excited me. I like the Epiphone Jack Cassidy bass the best. I saw him play with his early 1970’s Gibson EB2 gold top and his signature Epiphone. Grey sound sensitive to his playing technique, from clean to distorted.
I believe that rather than a mid control, the Jack Cassady bass knob controls the impedance of the pickup, something like splitting the coil at two different spots, which is like adding lengths of coil to the pickup = more output across the board = more compression
All very nice but for some reason I didn't gel with the Gretsch tones so much...horses for courses I guess. The Epi surprised me, I quite liked that one...it did well for one pickup, very versatile
Love those warm sounds, indeed! And your vids as well. Allways a great pleasure viewing you guys playing. What if you added a P-Type to those Comparisons, just to give anyone afairly familiar reference?
Good idea! But they wouldnt do it Cause you would Not hear That much difference or Would Think really nice warm Tone too…. The Most important Part is the musician 🎶🙏🏼 But i like to geek our too and buy so much More than i Need ( and can afford as a small Professional musican 😂)
@@fredparker3384 The top is quite tin and you can damage it if you hit something with a straight jack or if something pushes the cable too hard (like standing on it). An angled plug is safer in a hollowbody.
WHAT A GREAT SESSION! The interaction between these two gentleman is a study masterful salesmanship! ( so subtle!- yet damn effective!) - I'm in CANADA, 🇨🇦 😎 and get sick of the screaming American head bobbin', trash talkin' & BLARING "TED NUGENT"approach to EVERYTHING! - then along comes NATHAN! what a great personality & talent on the Bass! You could build a band around this guy@ 👦 Rock solid! Then Lee! ( is that "Young Lee? - regardless, they're both fine human brings!) - and Lee's drill on the Bass is EAR CANDY! 🍬 😋 Well done, Lads!
I'm aware of how absurdly expensive high end guitars can get, but I gotta say I find it odd how you were acting like 899 for a bass is some how a budget instrument. If your trying to say it plays like guitar twice the price then cool, but 899 is hardly a steal.
I probably wouldnt refer to 899 as budget, but affordable is a good term - kind of in the middle-end of the market. Standard high end basses are 1100 and up. Think Fender Player vs fender American pro.
@@eveythingthatsadam Sadly, for Excel basses there aren't ANY stockists anywhere on earth! D'Angelico re-run them for a couple of years then stopped - obviously not profitable enough. I've been hunting one for about 3 years now, found a couple in Australia and one in Italy, sadly I wasn't in (or near) either country at the time.
How does that neck feel on the B&G with that soft V shape I play mostly Jazz bass and Ibanez basses. is that V shape take getting used to or does it feel natural? Thanks
Having owned the shortscale dbl cutaway Gretsch for a few years now...the learning curve adapting to it is quite steep, but if you give it enough of a chance to warm up to it, it will grow on you...I imagine that's even truer of the longscale
Currently more of a collector than a musician as in the "old " days, arthritis winning the battle there, but I would have hoped that you guys would have thrown in a "P" bass or jazz base or otherwise, just to get a perspective of the advantages ( or disadvantages) to a semi-hollow bass. I believe that there is a place for semi-hollows but I would like to here the distinction before I dole out $1k (US) or more.
The thing that puts me off the Jack Casady basses is the cutaway at the neck. I see no need for this, aesthetically, to have this, other than to look different. But for me, it throws off the whole look of the bass. It looks like it's not finished. Of all of them, it has the sound you expect from this kind of bass. Personally, I'd go for the Gretsch, because it's just an absolutely beautiful Bass.
Played a Hofner violin bass the other day, next to a Hagstrom Viking and Epi Cassidy - the worst experience of my life (to clarify, loved the Hag, Epi was OK), I don't know if it was just the set up but Jeez - what a let down! Awful
I have to say, I’m not generally a fan of hollowbody basses, but every one of these has at least one setting that sounds great. But none of them are with the tone rolled off.
the gretsch looks the coolest, if i ever become a wealthy businessman ill buy one that will hang on the wall of my office and gradually yellow over the years as i light dozens of cigars with wads of money
First off that Gretsch sounds amazing on the outro jam! My computer speakers couldn't pick up most of the bass coming out of the Jack Casady with highs rolled off, I thought I'd muted the video! Is it just me or is there a noticeable fret buzz on all of the import Warwick's they test? Is it a setup issue? Cheap strings? I have played some used ones and didn't remember it being so prevalent
The Jack Cassady bass impressed me the most!
Kinda regret trading mine in for a used Mexican P Bass (imo my Jack Cassidy bass cut through the mix way better when I would play with my group of musician buddies)
I do really love my Gretsch for that hollow body sound… and who doesn’t love orange!
Missed one! Ibanez Artcore bass. I bought a beautiful red burst about 6 years ago. Looks fantastic, played like shite with the standard strings. I hated it for a year. Then I put chrome flats on it… what a transformation! Now it sounds fantastic, very warm - almost like an upright.
I had the same experience and results with my Artcore bass. Was about to sell it then discovered Pyramid Gold flats. I've loved it ever since.
Agreed
I'm ordering flats when I order the Artcore AGB/AFB-200................but which do I want..............................?
Looking at buying a AGB200. What flats fit best? I saw another post where someone put short scale flats on theirs and the silk was over the nut.
I could listen to these 2 play all day
Sounds awesome through my new headphones. My dose of bass has been satisfied.
Wow, the Gretch sounded wonderfully
Nice addition with Pete adding guitar. Used to love to hear Nathan play guitar, he’s a great doubler.
The Guild Starfire i came out this year and it is a remarkable bass with a little nice vintage pickup feature.
Finally there are some hollow body basses with proper bridges. I don't really like those bridges that the typical violin basses have. I want to be able to properly adjust the intonation at the bridge...
Right 100%
Thanks for doing this shootout mates. That Casady & Gretsch are really cool.
The intro jam is so good that I thought it was guitar jam, until I read the title. LOL
The Jack Casady Bass is still the best value bass on the market imo. I always bring that to sessions, and the sound guys always end up preferring that over expensive custom shop basses from other brands. Happens every time! :-)

Low impedance pickup runs better into the recording equipment.
@@leesystems Yes, that is often the case. And the variable impedance switch makes it super versatile.

Other than his shorts, dude on the right absolutely killed it out there!
I was hoping we’d get a sneaky Pete peek sometime haha! Awesome video guys!
Voss with his sparrow legs out, looking good brother haha
Me too! but I keep mine covered up lest they offend!
I have a 2013 Fender Coronado Bass II and it's still my go to when I just want to jam without plugging in. I'm sad they don't make it anymore.
You guys jam so lekka together! Much love from SA 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Lekka man!
The Lee Sklar signature version of the Warwick Rockbass is a belter!
I think I might really, really want a jack Cassidy...
love all of these (not so crazy about the shorts)

I just found (and bought) a used ebony Epiphone Jack Casady (Korean made). It plays great and looks crazy beautiful.❤
When I started playing 58 years ago the Epiphone Rivoli ( preferably in sunburst )was very popular, probably second only to the precision.
I believe that rather than a mid control, the Jack Cassady bass knob controls the impedance of the pickup, something like splitting the coil at two different spots, which is like adding lengths of coil to the pickup = more output across the board = more compression
