💊 Dabigatran is an anticoagulant and direct oral thrombin inhibitor. This medication help to prevent thrombi, or blood clots from forming. It can be a useful replacement for heparin in people with a history of heparin induced thrombocytopenia. In this pharmacology lecture we will discuss about mechanism of action, therapeutic uses, pharmacokinetics, side effects, contraindications, drug interactions and some counselling point regarding dabigatran.
📍 Dabigatran is direct oral thrombin inhibitor. Dabigatran is approved for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Dabigatran etexilate is administered orally. Dabigatran is mainly eliminated by renal excretion. Major side effects of dabigatran, is bleeding and dyspepsia. Dabigatran is contraindicated in patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves. Idarucizumab may be used as an antidote to reverse bleeding in severe cases.
