Brilliant interview! Best one I've seen about the film yet. I will be following this podcast. I pray you get to interview Tobias Forge himself one day soon!
It's funny that Alex didn't expect the style of the music of Phantom of the Opera, based purely on the visuals. Because I had the same reaction to listening to Ghost for the first time. Which leads me onto how I discovered Ghost...
Apologies for a long story to follow...
Back in 2014 the only thing I knew about Ghost was the look of the nameless ghouls' black monk-like robes and venetian bauta masks. I was tv channel flicking one night and came across two ghouls hosting as guest programmers on Aussie music video show Rage.
The aesthetics of these two band members made me assume they made a certain type of metal that's not my cup of tea. I never bothered to check them out further or listen to their music. A brief look at their curated playlist told me they had good taste though.
Fast forward to March 2022. I am googling about a one-off production of Phantom of the Opera in Sydney that was to have entirely new costumes, sets and staging. I had Phantom on the brain as I had also bought tickets to the touring version of the show for the following year.
I get a search result for an interview with someone named Tobias Forge talking about his band Ghost's new album. The search summary picked up on mentions of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Phantom of the Opera in the article.
Ghost? I remembered the name. My mind is immediately cast back to the image of two robed and masked figures sitting on the iconic Rage couch. Interesting...
I open the article and skim down to find the relevant part.
Tobias Forge: “I love a lot of his stuff. So many other Broadway shows aren’t nearly as hit-driven as his stuff was, like Phantom Of The Opera or Memory [from Cats]. That stuff is unbelievably fucking good.”
I don't like most musicals, but Cats and Phantom I utterly adore. The music is amazing. The visuals, another layer of beauty of top. I'd never in my life heard a band or musician say they like them. I am immediately intrigued by a sense of inspiration kinship.
Wait, I think, so what does this band actually sound like?
I read the whole article and begin looking for Ghost's music on UA-cam.
Well, I stayed up all night in awe and amazement watching all their music videos and lore chapters, watching and reading interviews and of course, devouring their music. I was shocked. Ghost were not what I was expecting, but everything I wanted in music and a band.
Whenever I discover new bands or music for myself, they tend to exist in the past tense. So to find a current, contempory and active band that appealed to me on so many levels in so many ways, was unprecedented.
I ended up asking for two Ghost albums for my birthday that year and I finally went to my first ritual in 2023 just a few days after my birthday.
Here I am now, still buzzing from the movie.

Thank you for this interview! 💖 ed the intelligent questions asked about the making of the movie. Seeing it for the 4th time this week, which is more than I've seen any one movie on the big screen.
Since the theater worker posting on reddit was mentioned, just have to applaud the AMC chain for cranking up the sound so nicely. 🤘
The only thing I can even think to pick apart is simply Sister Imperator's character believability, since she goes from not wanting to rattle Cardi's ability to focus on his show, yet then puts him in charge of the Clergy. But I get that her little jab about his focus and attention span was meant to make the audience laugh. That said, after seeing Cardi playing a video game during the Tax Season webisode, Frater Imperator's acclimation to his new role should be rather amusing.
Well done Alex and Tobias! 👏🤘

I’m sure even as Brother Imperator he’ll still be riding his tricycle around the ministry 😂

@@GhostifiedGhoulishness haha exactly! It was my wish that Cardi would spend his days in the ministry with his tricycle . I even made a video about it and I got my wish 🤣

I just saw it the 4th time, today (Chicago suburbs got spoiled with more screenings going into this past week ❤️❤️❤️). I just realized that Cardi probably had Reddi-Wip in his tour rider. He gets served a can backstage. It's likely in the rider! 😂
Also note that his "Aha" moment starts with this dissociation scene, where he starts seeing all blurry. Loved that little contradiction, just as Ghost is infamous for contradictions (Satanic anti-pope gives uplifting pep talks and asks fans to "be nice" to each other on the way out).
I hope I caught most of the Easter eggs after the 4th time, but can't wait for the DVD.
Yeah, he's going to be snarfing down Reddi-wip, while crashing his red tricycle into the wall (and carrying a boom box) even as Frater. No doubt about it.

@@GhostifiedGhoulishness I noticed all these things on my 2nd and 3rd showing too . He sees his mum in a chair at first when she’s in a wheelchair it’s only at the end yes at his aha moment in the balloon either hallucinating or dreaming that he started seeing things clearly it was sad actually 🥺 but so good to see all the little things you miss first time round ! Also Kevin was watching dancing but his VHS tapes had the chapters oh all sorts of things I saw by my 3rd time !
