Bonnie Lynn Raitt (born November 8, 1949) is an American blues singer-songwriter and slide guitar player. During the 1970s, Raitt released a series of roots-influenced albums which incorporated elements of blues, rock, folk and country. In the 1990s she had a major return to form with the release of her album "Nick of Time" after several years of critical acclaim but little commercial success. The following two albums "Luck of the Draw" and "Longing in Their Hearts" were also multi million sellers generating several hit singles including "Something to Talk About", "Love Sneakin' Up on You", and the ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me" (with Bruce Hornsby on piano). Raitt has received ten Grammy Awards. She is listed as number 50 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 89 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.....Eddie
I fell in love with her first album...I saw her many times in the beginning and had the pleasure of she and Little Feat on the same bill. She's blues and there are many newer artists today that are talented real musicians....Danielle Nicole, Samantha Fish, Amanda Fish, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Beth Hart, Ally Venable they can sing and play! Thank goodness because radio sucks!
Been a long time since I've listened to this song, I'm always happy to listen to Bonnie sing, but this time I was a little sad because John is no longer with us and we will never get to hear any more songs from his heart, head and hand.
I saw Bonnie in Madison, Wisconsin, during college. At the Oscar Mayer Theater in the mid 80's. So good. Somehow I made it backstage (no idea how I did it or even why). But I saw her in the dressing room and I asked her, "Why didn't you play "Angel From Montgomery?" "I'm sick of that song," she replied. So fucking cool and real. Sorry for barging in somehow, Bonnie.
+Allan Ostermann . . . . . She toured non-stop, during the 70's. She drank the whole town of Durham NH, (UNH), under the table, in 1973. She has since, given up drinking.
I saw her in Virginia in 1998, went to the concert hoping to hear "Angel from Montgomery." She held off on it, but did it for the final encore. I'm glad she had gotten over being sick of it!
Go Badgers! I also was privileged to attend the fine University in Madison in the mid-80's. I did not see her there (mid-90's in Seattle) but I saw Melissa Etheridge early on in her career, not even out yet, on State Street (don't remember theater name). When I saw Bonnie (Seattle mid-90's) I had to fight back the tears when she sang this. I had to comment as I love & miss Madison, the best-est! (Sorry 4 run-on sentences & other weird use of the English language, but I really did graduate from the UW lol!!!)
Bonnie--love you forever, you inspired me to learn guitar and to sing. BUT! One time in my teens, a band asked me to sing "Angel from Montgomery" as my audition (because they'd heard me sing and thought I'd do it well). And I said "...I don't know that song." I didn't get the part. I didn't know until about 8 years later that they meant this^^ song, which I'd known since before I could talk. But in my head it was "Angel from a Gun Range." Enunciate!!

I am an old woman
Named after my mother
My old man is another
Child who's grown old
If dreams were lightning
And thunder were desire
This old house would've burned down
A long time ago
Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
When I was a young girl
Well, I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at
Just a free ramblin' man
But that was a long time
And no matter how I tried
The years just flowed by
Like a broken down dam
Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
There's flies in the kitchen
I can hear 'em there buzzin'
And I ain't done nothing
Since I woke up today
How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning
Then come home in the evening
And have nothing to say?
Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
To believe in this livin'

John Prine is brilliant being able to write from a woman's perspective.
But, I think she does it better than John, and their song together is very good.
John does it better than anyone. It's real, down to earth and honest in the way he does it. I love Bonnie but Prine is incredible.
