I'm sure others must have said this a thousand times, but it's really cool to see Father and Son involved in the hobby together. My Dad and I were always close but we never had a shared interest like you - you're both very fortunate. Great channel.
Many thanks, I know I'm lucky to have a shared hobby with Douglas, we are off to a two day exhibition together this weekend. Mind you we do argue and fall out a bit but that's all part of the binding thing and the father and son dynamic I guess!
Model trains is about the only thing I ever bonded with my dad over
Exactly what I was looking for, except I’m doing 8.5” radius. Wish me luck! 😀
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I have found if you start in the middle you can work round and then cut the ends in line with the straights which can be easier? I have since build down to 7.5 in radius so it's possible, but you are then very restricted to rolling stock. In the end I 3d printed coaches to fit the short wagon chassis as Hornby 4 wheel coaches won't go round less than about 12in radius, these are available on our website if that helps. Good luck with it and have fun
This was exactly the answer I was looking for. I opted for a flexitrack as I hope it will give me a more consistent run by the loco+trucks. It's going to be a hidden curve that's awkward to access and that demands the best possible chance of reducing non-scheduled events.....
i love tutorial tuesdays
the ideas are so cheap and easy
Thanks you make it look so easy, can't wait for the new year to get my layout started your videos are a great help.
Another fantastic quick video! 👍
THANKS FOR THAT I WILL BE ON THE CASE TOMORROW AND THE FOOFING FELT GOOD IDEAR I HAVE SOME IN MY WORKSHOP CHEERS JIM
Roofing felt works a treat, also maybe look at getting some of the track screws rather than track pins
just watched your tuesday eipsode 10 great cheers bruce.
thanks for sharing, Kev
Hi Mike & Doug
Absolutely loving these tutorial Tuesdays 😎👍
So what is next for this fab layout?
Kindest regards Dan 🙂👍
Thanks Dan , working on the scenery etc as we speak.
Nice one guy's. Cheers John.
Good to see the job close-up. Now those track pins look sturdier than what I've seen in the local model railway shop... what pins are you actually using I wonder...? Great channel!
Thanks. I used to get them from a shop in Hertfordshire when I worked that way, so am assuming there must be other stockists
Excellent idea, I am still undecided if I should bin my Hornby track for Peco Flexi Track.
Morning. Not sure about the flex track but I would certainly use peco points if I had a choice.
Nice video. The bit I struggle with is cutting flexi track always end up putting the piece of track in the bin. Has your mate Richard got any more of those grey track holding device please
Hi John. I've not seen one again. You could saw a couple of grooves in a bit of timber and use a clamp, would work the same, and some people are saying a track cutter works wonders.
I remember my first effort with flexi track. Disaster.
It took us a couple of attempts to get right really
Hi, enjoyed your little using flexi track video. Is it possible to create a curve 18” diameter without soldering & just connect using fish plates to existing Hornby standard 00 gauge new track?
Yes. If you start in the middle of the curve and pin as you go, then cut to size and join the straight to it, I've done it a couple of times that way
Hey guys
Interesting ideas, very tempted to do something similar on my exhibition layout to make it a continual loop...
So many ideas from you guys!
Thank you
Olly
Thanks Olly, just wish I had he spare time to make all my ideas!
Hahahaha don't we all?
Thanks
Olly
It's this working for a living that's the problem! It's catch 22 you have to work to pay for the model railways, but then you don't have the time to build them!
Hahaha yeah, oh well makes the time we do spend modelling that bit more special
Olly
Wow.. I can say.. Every modeltrain store owner would say :this is impossible, you will ruin ur track by rumming locos on it and bending it that far.. XD but it works... And it looks and runs beautifully... I already measured my h0 shunting layout.. Its exactly 18" across.. :) gotta buy me some flexitrack ^^
I know you try and do everything as cheaply as possible, but if you’re working with flexi track I would highly recommend investing in some proper track cutters - they make life so much easier.
Thanks for the heads up Fred
It's best to use track on the outside of flex-track, not the middle unless it has a hole already. See Peco TV about flexi-track for the reasons why. Nor should it be bent to be that sharp. Peco mentions that somewhere as well.
I love bending the rules, it does Bend that sharp and locos go round it so what's the issue. I have built 15in diameter layouts that work.
@@BudgetModelRailways it was somewhere on either the Peco website I think it was.
But that may not be Pexo brand.
The establishment want everyone to belive that 6x4 ft is the absolute minimum, its nonsense
If you have a dremel it should cut a flexi track quite nicely and clean.
Do you need to remove sleepers for bending?
No they slide round
thanks....I always believed you had to remove according to the degree of curvature...
Hi guys, you have inspired me to have a go at my own 18" curve layout. My board is 17 and three quarters x 70", but i think it'll be fine. You seem to have fixed the straight rails down first to give you stability in laying the flexitrack ends - - - can i please ask, how much space at the ends did you allow for the track to curve round? Ah wait, i light bulb moment - if the radius is 18", then half a circle is 9", so, say 10" to give you room for a bit of rolling stock over hang. Sound about right? I saw all your other vids on this 18" layout, i wouldn't believe it was possible if i hadn't seem it with my own eyes! I would have settled for putting an end to end layout on my board, but sometimes you just want to sit back with a cuppa and watch the trains go round, plus being able to run the old Hymek round is a big bonus!
Spot on with the maths , that's we did it. You will find that removing a coupling hook on alternate wagons helps, and only some Locos and wagons will be happy, but enough to have fun.
Ps the Lima class 26/27 goes round as well
@@BudgetModelRailways It does? Fantastic! I also have some Triang DMUs that have a huge amount of swing on the bogies - so those may go round as well...and some Triang MK1 coaches with equally large swing. I see you managed to get the Clerestory coaches to go round, so i don't see why coaches of the same era wouldn't do the same. The MK1's are quite long though, so i think you could only pull one or two. I wonder if adding a bit of cant on the curves would help? It might mean you could pull a longer rake.
Possibly?
Why are the connectors soldered? Im looking to do something very similar as I'm short on space
To stop the track moving. I have since found you can fix the middle then bend the track round, fix it and cut it, so you don't need to solder it
@@BudgetModelRailways great! Do you think a longer Loco like the flying Scotsman would be able to go round bend? I have a few small locomotive similar to the one in this video but id love to run my flying Scotsman that came from my grandad
I doubt it, you will probably need at least 1st radius set track which is 15in radius, but if you have the room set track is so much easier
@@BudgetModelRailways okay thanks! I'm gonna get some 1st radius as a guide and then try and see if I can go a little tighter with flexy as I am really space limited in terms on width as I can only push to around 24'. I know that's only a few inch away from 1st but I'll have to see how it comes together.
You will get older diesel locos round that like Hornby hymek and Lima class 33 etc, it's steam locos that are a problem. An old triang b12 might work
which side of the rail are you to put the sliding rail? inside or outside.
I tried this with flexi track and the flexi track rails came away from the sleepers. I'm new to model railways and though this would fit in my shed. What type flexi track did you use?
Old second hand track. It is fiddly it can help if you pin it as you go around. Remember that 1st radius set track is only 15in radius so that is a better option if you have the space?
@@BudgetModelRailways
Thanks for the advice I've measured the shed and can make it fit. So going with the small radius instead of flexi track.
@@andrewalorimer if you can find the old jouef track then they made a 13in radius set track which I have used. 1st radius is best if you can make it fit, you will need about 32in in total
@@BudgetModelRailways
Started layout in shed thanks for help. Subscribed to you channel to get more ideas. Thanks Again
@@andrewalorimer happy to help, good luck and have fun
Can this curve be done without straights? I want to make one sharp curve to go round a Christmas tree,,how can it be done without the set track to pin it to
It's possible but I've not tried it, I suspect you need to fix one end down first. We are making one to go round a Christmas tree using old Jouef track that is only 12.5 in radius
Budget Model Railways that’s what am planning on doing with mine as I cannot get hold of the jeoff track,,a small snow scene with a small fibre optic tree in the middle
Were could I buy the pin drill
I guessing any good model shop, mine is my late fathers and must be getting on for 50 years old, so,on its third generation of use with my son.
Good videos could I have your email so I can ask some questions thanks
Hi, you are welcome to ask them here, then everyone gets the info, which is helpful, what can we help with?
hi i am doing a model railway i have two tracks one of which i want to have above the first one can you tell me what i could hold the track up with many thanks jonathon
Hi Jonathon,
Cardboard supports and a layer of cardboard on the top should make a perfect platform to run trains on.
Thank you for that what controller is the best for 2 tracks
You can either use two single controllers or if you can find one a double controller. We don't get on with the Hornby basic controller although the older ones are ok. If you can get one the Gaugemaster controllers single or double are excellent.
