- In this video, we take a look at the evolution of tennis legend Andy Roddick's serve from 1999 to 2012. From his early days as a rising star to his peak as a dominant force in the sport, we see how Roddick's serve technique changed over the years.
He literally said in practice he decided to throw it up and hit it and see how it went. He did that for the rest of his career. Greatest server in tennis history in my opinion.
One of the most beautiful shots in tennis history. Roddick's serve motion is an art. At 0:40, interesting how his chin gets this close to his shoulder.
Yeah thats one thing I noticed with Roddick and Karlovic. Both guys have tossing shoulder that nearly touches their chins.
his serve is different and great.... because..... the motion is UP-DOWN-UP which creates a lot of torque. The conventional way is DOWN-UP which is more of a slow/steady swing motion. Roddick's gets a sudden pop because of that initial UP-DOWN before the final UP. That's where all his leg drive comes from. The other aspect is the bow.... he bows his body really nicely by getting his chin to his shoulder which inherently pushes out the hip and cocks the gun for firing.
such a weird technique, but generates lots of speed
Why would it be weird?!
his serve is all speed
I see no evolution throughout this compilation. Different angles, different times of pause. No actual sign of evolution to me.
Didn’t need to change much obviously
I thought I was blind for a moment there till I saw your comment. Yea, I too don't see any change.
Minutia. The one "big" change is he pointed his racquet more up on the takeback (like most players) when he was younger. It then started to drop and point more out to his right.
Pretty much the same every year
How can you improve a perfect serve like that?
