Only video I found on what I was looking for, thank you so much. Also, can you make a video on how to make a Roman furca, a cross that carries a bag and equipment. You can look it up on how to make it, but I enjoy your tutorials, because they are easily understandable. Subscribed.

Thanks very much. I will look into the Roman Furca. I am always looking for better ways to carry my kit.

Thanks Miceal. Super easy to do and works very well. The trick is having a blanket with the extra length. Happy new year Miceal

Good tip! I have sewn some buttons and matching holes for them in my blanket.

Hiya I’m late to the party but I was wondering in what temperatures do you use the blanket sleeping bag-bivvy combo, I live in canada and I’m about to make a wool blanket into a sleeping bag the only difference being I’m folding it in 3s so I’ll have one more layer and I have a us army bivvy to go with it

I have not used the Blanket Sleeping Bag/SOL Escape Bivy combo in very cold weather yet. I have been comfortable in the combo down to about 6Cel. This winter I plan to try it out down to zero or below in a car camp in our mountain area and post a video.

Nice! We are going to demo this to Cub Scout leaders as an alternative to having first-time campers having to purchase an expensive sleeping bag. Going to suggest they wrap the blanket with all 4 para cords to insure they have them all

That's awesome Ken. Glad the video helped! A layer of warm thermals and a warm beanie help when the temperature drops too low. Thanks for watching and your feed back Ken. Dave

Thanks for the tip. What is the orange thing at the end of video?

      Thanks for the response.
It is the S.O.L Escape Bivy Bag. It is like a survival blanket sewn up into a sleeping bag. It has a zipper from shoulder to about the waist allowing easy entry and exit from the bag. It is heat reflective inside but still breathable and very good water repellancy. I sometimes use it as a waterproof cover and extra warm layer for my down sleeping bag (which can fit inside the Escape Bivy). I have found this bivy bag to be a great piece of kit, very versatile and reusable.

do you use a bug net for your head ?

    • @southernlandsolo7839
      @southernlandsolo7839  7 років тому

Good point. My blanket is long enough to pull over my head if insects were a problem but I do have an army surplus mosquito net which I use when camping on the ground. Most of my overnighting is done in a hammock with a built in mozzy net.

    Thanks.
If you use your bivvy out of your blanket and you turn during night time, I think, your bivvy should be damaged very soon(in some nights) because of different small branches and so on. What is the sence to buy the bivvy just for "some" nights?
And, I think, you use some tent over yourself to protect yourself from the rain, am I right?

Thanks for your comments. This tutorial was filmed only to demonstrate how to make the blanket-sleeping bag. I use this setup most of the times I camp. I have always used a ground pad or hammock insulation under me and flying a tarp over me, for rain and wind protection.

@@southernlandsolo7839 I understand, boss, the video was for the blanket.
But anyway, if to use the blanket on the ground (not on a hammock), it is necessary to protect it from the wet ground (particularly in New Zealand). So, what do you carry to use for insulation your blanket from the wet ground, if the bivvy is not enough alright for that (the reason was explained already)?
I ask you not for fun, but to understand I can use your way ('the blanket)in my case or not.

@@delgofer-3209 A strong plastic tarpaulin works well and is low cost. I have a new East German Poncho/Tarp I plan on using. An SOL Escape Bivy can also work very well with this blanket sleeping bag. The SOL Escape Bivy provides protection from rain, wind and the wet ground and it is also breathable. The only problem is that a large person plus this blanket may not have enough room inside the SOL Bivy.

@@southernlandsolo7839 I was going to by SOL bivvy for such purpose (instead of blanket I was going to use sleeping bag ). But in the the owner was saying the SOL bivvy would be damaged enough easy if I will use just on the ground.
About the tarpaulin... I have one to use it under tent. But to carry it regularly it takes much space, it is not thin.
So still, I don't find the solution to use the blanket as a good alternative, boss.
Why I think and question you, because I try to find the best solution to carry gear which would protect me from the weather condition. What I carry, I am not happy of it, it takes to much space and weight. I try to find the way which is more efficient. That is why I started to think about your blanket.
I carry: the tent, the hammock, the mat under sleeping bag (otherwise it is cool), sleeping bag and special cotton clothing for the night time (not happy to sleep in dirty clothes).
So, my friend, I see, if SOL bivvy is not the way to use outside of your blanket you should really take the tarpaulin which takes much space. Or even if you will use the poncho (I also have 2 good different ponchos), your way will not really win mine.
You are using the tent, I use it too; you are using the blanket, I use sleeping bag instead of it(the sleeping bag should be more efficient because of how much it takes space and weight/how much it heats); I use some blown mat, you are using your poncho (the mat takes a little bit more space but in many times more efficient). So, very similar.

@@delgofer-3209 Your sleeping bag and SOL Bivy and inflatable mat does sound the best for efficiency, weight and space. The best system I have used was very similar. An inflatable mat plus 3 season down sleeping bag and the SOL Escape Bivy. I wore a polypropylene base layer when I went to sleep. It was very warm, very light weight and the down bag packs away super small. I am 1.7metre tall and 84kg. I fit inside quite well. It was only a little tight.

Brilliant idea, I'll have to try this. A knot I love which you may or maynot know (excuse the pun) is the constrictor knot. It's a bit like the clove hitch but binds really tight and you wouldn't even need the half hitch to secure it. As with a lot of knots there are different ways of tying it, I've got a really easy way of doing it by wrapping it around my hand. I can't find a video on this method but here's another pretty easy way. Loads of other videos on youtube.

Great knot! I can see loads of uses for it. It does look similar to the Clove Hitch. Thanks Jack
