Great video, long time believer on having multiple sources of starting fires. Have to ask, your custom camp knife shown in this video- are they for sale?
A suggestion: take charcloth piece and submerge a good deal (80%) of it in grease, leaving a part of it without. That part will catch the spark, but as you blow it will light up like a candle and burn very hot. You can also submerge it in saltpeter, it will light to the smallest spark. This two tricks plus a water tight can that also hold a flint and the striker make for a nice kit.
I've got fat wood but I use bacon grease soaked paper towels that I put the bacon on after frying it. Those are normally thrown away. I roll them up and cut them into about half inch wide spirals. They burn for about 10 minutes, I think. I've never timed it so I'm not completely sure about that time.
I would concur that this would be a great idea to stretch out our supplies. A real lighter is THE go to device when you are in a bind and HAVE to have a fire quick. They do get used up fast though. Alternative starters are a great idea so you can save the lighter for real emergencies. Ferrocerium rods are great are great too, BUT they don't last for ever. I like to carry both of those along with other systems. Magnifying glass, traditional flint & steel and fire pistons. They all have a place in my kits.... Great video!
Absolutely! I always carry those in my bag. I don't depend on one source and I carry a couple in my cargo pocket and a couple on my leather belt as well as in a belt pouch. The belt ones are small but water proof and efficient. Without fire it's almost impossible to survive a horrific scenario Be prepared; not scared!
I carry a pocket rasp in my back pack. It is a tool that doesn't cost much and it's a tool you could let a fellow outdoorsman use to make shavings instead of a knife. Also, it captures the shavings inside.
This is honestly one of the most useful survival tips I’ve seen from a survival enthusiast. Simple concept but very overlooked IMO. That’s why I subscribe to this channel.
Just watched this and just saw you at the Helene operations in your area. As you said, the day has come where just running to the store for your needs has gone. Be blessed and all in your area during this time of hardship and working together for future blessings.
Just a Fantastic, Cool Video. Plenty of pine trees on my land here in South Carolina. Been using pine straw for years to get my burn ring going. Ill be making some fat lighter Ferro. Starters just for Primary Backups. !!

I'd have to process that big stump handle down into 1/4's , then 1/8th's, then 16th's until I have a bunch of 1/2"x 5" pieces and stuff a couple in my kit, a band saw makes it easy.
You are a real Boy Scout (hope that’s not offensive to you). Wish I were watching this as a preteen vs seeing my last sunsets. The information you provide fantastic & necessary. Even if the lights never go out these skills give so much confidence & usefulness -backyard, camping, hunting, vehicle breaks down on a forest road. Hope your family is healing fully. How bout a video of your wife making fire & shelter with pain & bad leg or the child urpping doing the same.
The way I go is the metallic pencil sharpeners... they're made out of magnesium, that's lightweight and a great firestarter, plus they make great shavings... they're everywhere in my bags... everywhere in the world... I provide man-made things... I let Nature provide the natural...
Nice trick brother.. I just picked up a 6pk on Amazon. For the weight and size , why not add to every kit... It's rare I get turned on to new stuff.. thanks man
It's a very nice version of that style of tool. Zero doubt about that. I personally would, as I do with students, call that a backup as it is no different that a modern lighter in most ways. "Fire starting skills" are the only ones that will "last forever," as the more fluid, functional and familiar you are with starting a fire from scratch without modern tools "the way" generally becomes moot...
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have made one exactly like that in the past, and would like to share or recommend an upgrade to your idea, this modification I did because the way we did, we end up losing a small part of the ferro, the part that is embedded inside the fatwood handle. The idea for the modification came because of a Doan Magnesium bar, instead of using the fatwood as a "back handle" I tried instead using it as the magnesium bar, fatwood on the length of the whole ferrocerium bar, the only down side from your design is the gluing of the ferro to the fatwood, it cannot be done only using the resin from the fatwood, it needs a better type of glue like an epoxy and the drilling needs to be done all the way through the piece and have the fatwood cut after to leave the perfect concave groove so you can glue the ferro bar. Thank you for reading and hope you could understand my broken down english as it is not my first language, but as your fellow woodsman I had to share this modification with you as it helped me when carrying it, storing inside the pack, pocket or belt, easier to remove shavings from it, and uses every little bit of your ferrocerium bar. (Also if you work with leather as I do, to make a sheath for it is a lot easier) Again thank you for sharing you knowledge with us, may God bless you and your family, all the best to you! Cheers and have a great Sunday.
I have 6 large plastic coffee tubs filled with precut lighter knot , and 2 more with smaller shavings . I'm damn near 70 now so reckon they will go to my Grandson .
Thanks! I'm gonna make some as gifts! I suspect I can find a couple chunks of fatwood right here at home. We have a few Ponderosas that have died around the place, and there are still stumps sticking up.
I love that golden goodness. I have enough to last me and my kids for a long long time. But now, thanks to you, I have another project. You really need to stop giving me these ideas. My wife is getting really pissed.
one thing people overlook that is very good in a fire kit is a pencil sharpener. Just like sharpening a pencil it'll turn little sticks into shavings that are very good for fire starting.
Wszystko ok, też korzystam z tego jako rozpałki, tylko taki duży wałek jest dość ciężki i niepraktyczny. Lepszy byłby mniejszy lub mniejsza tłusta gałązka luzem do oskrobywania.
Exposed to air fatwood looses his resin by time . Store it in a plastik bag sealed. otherwise it will not last for very very long time. Anyway nice idea you had.
For decades, I have always used BIC Lighters and I don't even have to explain why because it's too obvious.... I keep a couple in my van, a couple in my backpack and in my tool box, and a case of them at home.... With that said, I did buy 1 Magnesium Fire Starter that I keep in my backpack in the extreme rare case my 2 BIC Lighters stored in the backpack fails for some reason.... So far, I only used the Magnesium only once in a practice test, and it lit with just 2 strikes, and I never used it again in roughly 25 years, but since it never expires, it will remain forever in my backpack.
I took a piece of lighter knot, made it into shavings. Then i took a magnesium fire starter and ground it up. Then i ground up the ferro rod that came with the mag block. Then i mixed in some packing material made from denim, mixed it all together.. Brother, you can light a fire in a hurricane!😂🎉🎉

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Good philosophy, no matter what the subject.
Truth!
Always nice to see a like-minded! Fatwood is my favourite Firestarter for years now, the only way for me to start my oven!

Hello from Oklahoma! Love me some fatwood! Some people around here call it lighter knot. Fun project. Thanks for the video! Good Stuff.

Awesome comment!
Great idea, i now have another use for a pinetree that just fell in the my yard .👍🏻
Go for it!
Vaseline has sooo many uses on the hike. With it you can light a fire even in the rain.
Awesome show on how too, thanks

You have to hunt high and low for the magnesium version. I finally found some online at a fabric type hobby store and ordered 5.

FATWOOD as the ferrocerium handle. Genius. Why hasn't anyone else thought of that before? LOL.. sub'd just because of that. 👍

Thank you very much
Love to watch and see the Bushcraft.... and it's nice to know you're one of the few that still have dinosaurs on their land now a days. Ax
That's cool I do love some fat pine for starting a fire
Dual purpose things are good things 👍
EXCELLENT IDEA! Thanks.
good idea. video done well in every way.

Yeah, it would be unpleasant in the pocket.

Ferro rod doesn't like moisture, mine disintegrated in my damp shed, Wonder how it will react to the pine resin over time
So far so good. This one has been in my truck for months.
When/if flint and butane runs out, a good bushcraft knife and ferrocerium rod will last a very very long time.
Is possible long time survival?
Where are you getting a fero rod for a few dollars?
Can you tell me about your bike from the beginning of your video?
It is made by VTUVIA
Can this dry out after a while once exposed to the air?
I don’t think so
It would be nice to live in area were you could fine fat wood
It’s some pretty great stuff!
No pine trees where you are?

your dog probably trying to herd the cars.
If you made it a little bigger, say the size of a bowling ball you could hand it down to several generations……😂
Good video but CHARCLOTH is much easier to come by and a supply that weighs only an ounce or two is enough for dozens of fires and much more portable.
why not use it as a candle?
Not sure about this one but most of these are made in their back yard.
