Zach, I was wondering if you've ever been up to Sandymush Bald (in the Newfound mts). I just got back from an overnight up there (I stayed in the cabins a few hundred feet down from the summit). It's on private land and is VERY secluded, and the 2 1/2 mile hike up from Hwy 209 is pretty steep, and definitely challenging, but absolutely beautiful. The bald summit is HUGE, comparable to Max Patch, I think --- but very much less crowded. I watched the sunset up there last night and it was out of this world. The only thing that disappointed me was there was no view to the south, because the trees blocked it, but long range views could be had to the north, east and west.
Yes I was up there three years ago in the winter when the cabins are closed. I led a hike with a small group across those peaks with permission from the cabin owner. I didn't make a video for it due to all the private property.
@@bigzach322 As an experienced hiker yourself ,I'm wondering how you would rate the trail (assuming you took the trail that comes up from Hwy 209 on the north side) - is it up there in steepness with the likes of the Green mountain trail in Middle Prong wilderness (which I haven't hiked yet but want to) or would you say it's more moderate? I didn't find it technically challenging (I found Sam Knob to be harder in the sense of more rock scrambling/eroded trail) but man, it is relentless in how steep it is, and the last half mile going up to the summit must have been close to 45 degrees! TOTALLY worth it though.
@@luckyotter623 The forest road to the cabins is moderate, I wouldn't consider it steep at all. The final little climb from the cabins to the bald was steep, that's how the Green Mountain Trail is for the first 2 miles and the Woody Ridge Trail is for its entire length.
@@bigzach322 Wow! Thanks for confirming my suspicion! I agree with you -- the bit from the cabins to the bald is MUCH steeper than the road from 209 up to the cabins. Still want to attempt the Green mountain trail sometime soon, probably in spring.
The road up to Brown Gap is rough, I wouldn't recommend it if you have a low clearance car. If you drive to Max Patch you can try the loop around the mountain.
One of my favorite places. Thank you.

Wow! you got some great views! Thanks for sharing
Yeah the summit was awesome
Has been on my list for over 20 years...I would like to go up there this Spring or Summer...Thanks for sharing your thoughts and videos!
No problem, thanks for watching
Great views!
Love this! This is on my 2017 bucket list.
Really great views from up there. Seems like in most of the thruhiker videos it's fogged in. No wonder it was crowded that day.
And it was February, just imagine what a summer weekend is like
Great video. Would you prefer parking at Brown or Max? My wife and I are making this same hike soon.

Zachary Robbins thx for the info. My old Cherokee will go just about anywhere.
Then you should be fine driving anywhere, Brown Gap is more solitude than just driving right up to Max Patch.
