Is there racism in Crete? what should you consider as a black woman thinking of moving to Crete Permanently? these are just some of the questions we are going to be answering today.

Rose, there are always stupid people in airports. I remember years ago while in Athens with my Greek American parents and the people in the airport gave us a lot of grief. My parents spoke fluent greek. You have a beautiful spirit and don't let anything change that. 🌻

Thank you so much, it gives me some kind of comfort in a strange way to know that I am not alone in this. But I think they need to treat people better. @@pipilongue South of Athens sounds good, but if you decide on a Greek island, I think Crete is the best because its size gives you a variety of living, for example, if you decide you want city life, you can move to Heraklion, If you prefer mountain life, you can have that too. Beach living, whatever you desire, Crete has it.

Me visiting to Create as a black man from America it was nice I had moments where I felt people starring, majority of the time people were very nice and outgoing but they never offended me until my last day being in crete me and my fiancé was on the beach in agapi the security walked literally passed 100+ white / Greek people to go straight to me and her and didn’t believe we live on the resort!! Rose. Thanks for posting this fabulous video telling some of your life stories in such an engaging way with beautiful humor and great personality. I agree with you 100% that security people or law and order when doing what they do and need to ask for something there is no reason they could not do so in a friendly polite respectful manner with "please, thanks , and a smile"...after all we the people/or traveler's at the airport are their customers and deserve to be treated with respect...and in doing so both parties...us and them...can go on or way after the interaction feeling good about ourselves. I would add, that even if the constant checks by security are somehow justified by a strong pattern of persons with dark skin passing thru the airport illegally, it is all the more reason they should treat you with respect and even apologize for the inconvenience and stress they are causing you until such time as they determine you are breaking the law, as till then you are an innocent law abiding traveller just like everyone else waiting to board the plane...and even then if they discover a persons was doing something illegal they should behave politely...since that is the way all persons are entitled to be treated and expect to be treated themselves. There is no need for meanness and hostility which only diminishes. The beauty of this video is that hopefully some people will watch it and maybe see where they need to improve their interactions with others, or maybe give some direction or guidance to their staff to do, and in doing so hopefully incrementally improve "people" relations overall. As they say, once it's on the Internet it's there forever, which means a lot of people will hear your very moving words and hopefully learn from them. Looking forward to watching more or your videos !!. All the best from Ireland and America.

But if you stay and if you show respect to their way of life , they will accept you as their own . About hair , Cretan women don't like people to touch their hair . Only if it is absolutely necessary . Because of the sun and the weather we have showers all the time so to make our hair is waisted money . A hair dresser have no idea about Greek hair too , not just African . Have fun , have respect and you will get a lot of Cretan friends . 👍👍👍

Greek airports can be a nightmare. But I think they have become better at dealing with black people/ Africans. My first experience at a greek airport was horrible. I was traveling from Africa and got stopped, checked and gifts I had were destroyed in their search for drugs I suppose. I had terrible experience while traveling from Copenhagen to Hanover airport. Everybody on our flight breezed through the airport(EU flight, so usually no one is stopped), except yours truly- I was stopped by armed police and asked to show my passport. They were very intimidating and aggressive. Mind you, I was traveling with my Greek MIL who was not stopped. I guess as black people, we learn to expect this treatment. It's called traveling while black

So...first of all I would like to say that you are a very sweet person. I come form crete but I live in Athens for all my life. From my experience I know that cretans are very stiff like people but good in heart. They have changed through the years, got very suspicious with all foreigners, just have to know you first. Being Cretan isn't the same as being Greek in matters of behaviour. I've experienced discrimination just because I live in Athens! Even though my father lives in Crete my mother is Cretan too. Heraklion is like Athens. Big city, multicultural. If you want to find someone for your hair try hair salon in Platanias they braid hair and have experience. Customs officers are like that in most countries around the world. My sister had a similar experience and she is Greek obviously. Hope everything turns out to be wonderful for you. Every new life experience needs patience and good will.

Is the smoking, second hand smoking really bad or can one get away from it? I’m very introverted and don’t like crowds so don’t go out much. Just watched your video and I honestly don't know if I would've been able to stay as calm as you did at the airport. It was the smartest thing of course bc getting angry at them would've probably made things worse. Anyway, I am just going to say it: they were racist. Yes they were doing their job, but you can do your job without being disrespectful and demeaning and without the harrasment. You were treated that way bc you're black. No other reason. Period. And sadly enough it will probably not be the last time.
About the rest of your video: thank you for sharing. I visited Crete a couple of years ago and fell in love with the island. We stayed in Heraklion, Rethimnon and Chania and in all of those cities we were the only black people. Enjoyed all three but Rethimnon was my favorite city (although we were refused a table at one restaurant.. I can think of no other reason than our skin color, since other white people who came after us all got a table). Anywaaaay, overall people were open and kind and curious and asked real questions.
    Thanks again for sharing! 🤗

Your treatment in the airports was clear racism. I'm sorry that you had to endure that. Your husband in my opinion should have never left your side. Here in the US, white people (and other non-black people) will use the excuse of "just doing their jobs" to discriminate, harass and demean black people. Often times the racism isn't overt, it's subtle, aka microagressions, even unconscious, such that people aren't even aware that their behavior is racist. Racism isn't always an overt malicious act by people with conscious ill intent. I hope to be able to move to the Aegean coast of Greece one day, but I'm fully aware that the disease of racism is everywhere and can show up in the most mundane ways. Stay safe my sister.

Hey great content, I wish you best with your UA-cam channel. No disrespect but I need to educate you on a few things. I’m a mixed race of Bosnian, Turkish and Arabic. Firstly Greeks are not white. They are mixed and basically apart of Middle East. If you do research they were actually colonized by the Turks and Arabs so there mixed. They never colonized Africans so frankly you have nothing to worry about, your not in danger. If some Greek is rude to you it’s not because of your skin color. I know you have been raised to think that but no worries there not white and they have no racist history if you actually do research. Please don’t bring this mindset to Greece thinking your being attacked and hated wherever you go. If a Greek person gets to know you I’m sure they will love you unless your not a nice person and feeling victim or maybe that Greek is just not a nice person. When I went to Greece there was many Greeks staring at me and some were nice besides few times I got dirty looks so it doesn’t matter if you are African even I dealt with hatred. Many Africans in Greece live peacefully and comfortably and have never experienced racism. If someone doesn’t like you maybe there going through something. I pray you are having good time in Greece and remember they can’t be racist because they are mixed people and also very hospitable. Every country though has rude people so please don’t bring this environment and mindset to Greece. Learn Greek and actually try to make friends you’ll be in shock that they care less about skin color.

Don't mind the airports, we just have too much illegal human or drug trafficing from Africa (Kenya is a place from where that frequently happens as far as I know), so it was a targeted, yet random check in a way. Don't take it too personally. Also don't forget airports are like borders whithin a country, so we can expect such strict treatement sometimes, especially in a country like Greece where airport services haven't developed yet a serious communication link between eachother, so you had to suffer 2 checks for the same thing. But nevertheless I think you already gave your answers to your questions on how Cretans and Greeks persive you, meaning as an equal to them. Stay safe and happy!

There’s literally nothing wrong to be black in Crete,we treat people all the same, culture colour etc!
In villages in mountains where people are not that much educated perhaps will be difficult, but on the sea side ,I truly believe there’s not that much difficulty to live as a black person

Crete ,most of the Cretans have ancestry of Arabs and Africa, and we all know that ..
So yet again ,we are friendly as much we can and we respect all humans

Sweet Rose. When I move to Chania, we’ll get together and meet if you’d like. Wow, you’re growing bananas? You’re from Kenya? I’ve never been there but long to go sleep with orphaned elephants, there… I’ll be growing my own food once there as well. We’ll exchange crops, if you’d like 😊

@@island.odysseyNo, don't change a thing. I could listen to you and hear that laugh and see that smile all day long. Especially don't change for someone who has enough time to be disrespectful but lacks the brains to turn off the video. I've wanted to move to Crete my whole life. I have felt drawn there, and am fascinated by Bronze Age history and the area in general. Like I was Minoan in a past life. Your video was very helpful. Please keep doing them! 😊

I was just wondering, how do you manage to support yourself??, as I know Crete is very expensive, and there are no jobs there for foreigners..., The reason I am asking is because I would love to move to Crete, but I don't know what I can do there to support myself.
