    I live in Southern California in the mountains and last night our low was 27 and our high today is 41. Not to bad at all yet.
    What I’ve learned over the years is to have backup against backup and then more backup.
    We do not live off grid, we have both electric and gas but there are a lot of times that we do get power outages.
    I’ve learned to keep a small two burner propane stove, a gas generator, a small portable solar by Blue Yetti plus a wooden fireplace.
    I can cook and warm up water for baths and heat up at least one room in my house that keeps us nice and cozy.

    Awesome video, minus the power outage. Survived many of them growing up in Michigan. Dad used to heat up charcoal in metal buckets from the grill in the early years before he installed an Ashley wood stove. Us 6 kids loved the weeks ( some years) of being home from school. Mom would cook on the grill in our enclosed porch. The hardest part was watering the farm animals by hauling creek water in 55 gallon drums, as well as dumping creek water in the toilet reservoir so we could flush. Never remember it being that hard on us though, but we were all just kids - I’m sure mom and dad were stressed but it does bring back fond memories. Hang in there, your both tough!

    Smartest thing you can do at this point is to learn everything you can. Implement the lessons and put safety first. Then these types of things actually can be an adventure without so much worry.

    Another option is a Jackery power station. We have a couple for hurricane season. You can recharge them and run them inside the house. Add an electric kettle plus a good old fashioned hot water bottle and it will keep you warm. Plus the kettle can be used to make cup of noodles, instant mashed potatoes, things like that.

    I feel your pain with no power and being cold. We invested in a generator for our camper but I can say we have definitely pulled it out when we lost power here in the winter due to storms. We use it for the heat and refrigerator only. Bundling up helps. Look into propane stoves for camping even for cooking in situations like these they are helpful. As for Washington we are swimming. Its been raining for days, some places are flooding near us but we got our boots and boat ready in case. Sending good vibes to you guys ❤

    Time to work on an emergency plan, especially living in Alaska. I live in the mountains of Virginia and have experienced power outages for as long as 7 days. I have propane for heat and can run that gas log without electricity. It’s not the most efficient use of the propane, but sometimes necessary. I have a Jackery & a small gas generator, a butane stove for cooking & heating water & a French press for coffee that only requires hot water. I stock up on baby wipes for “bathing”, extra batteries & tons of battery powered “tap” lights. I also stock up on gallon jugs of drinking water, as well as fill up empty jugs prior to a storm for toilet “flushing” purposes. I keep extra canned goods and non-perishables and a good time to use up items from the freezer, as well. It took bring unprepared one time for me to work on a plan. When my daughter was little, I would set up a small tent inside and would have an inside camping trip with tons of blankets. I hope some of these suggestions will be helpful in setting up a plan. Best wishes!

      Amazing suggestions! And thank you so much for taking the time to comment this helpful info! :) Normally we rely on our wood stove during power outages but sadly don’t have one at the moment! We always have water, fuel, two generators (with space heaters) ready to go! Luckily it wasn’t as cold as it normally is in November so we didn’t have to use too much of our resources!

    • @ob1konobe
      @ob1konobe 8 місяців тому

      ice storm, late 1990's, '97,98 I think, portions of Maine without power for weeks, propane and woodstove a must have, neighbor helping neighbor works, it brought out the best in some people, and the worst in others.. We have grown accustomed to grocery stores in electricity. Nothing wrong with getting back to the basics.
      And family. We adapt and we overcome..

    Living in Alaska, or any norther and southern area for that matter, without an alternative heat source is a fools game, power goes out, that is just a given, it is up to you to keep your house warm. Dual fuel generators are relatively cheap 4000 watts at a minimum that will run thee important things Refrigerator, freezer, and furnace. Lighting is really not an issue, you can use LED camping lanterns, just stock up on plenty of batteries.

    • @katandandy
      @katandandy  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much for your comment! We agree 👍🏼 that’s why we have learned to have two generators (one for a backup). Our heater (like most in the matsu valley) depend on the boiler for our baseboard heaters. If we have no electricity for our well, that means no main source of heat. We have always had our wood stove in the room but are upgrading. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

      A Toyo stove with a 100Ah battery and small inverter will run it for about 24 hours. Also direct vent propane heaters don’t require any power. We use that as a backup at our remote cabin when we leave for a few days and want to keep it warm for when we go back.

    Isnt that normal for alaska? We dont have weather like you as it doesnt snow this far up where i am but we get high winds that can shut in towns when trees come down, or wipespread floodjnh doing the same thing. As long as youre as prepared as you can be it'll be fine. Just ride it out😉

    • @Chris_at_Home
      @Chris_at_Home 8 місяців тому

      Yes it is. I’ve lived here over 40 years and it isn’t unusual to have power outages in heavy snow or high winds. Last winter there were some people near us that didn’t have power for close to week. I keep our generators well serviced and ready to go. If the power is out 15 minutes I start it up. I keep enough fuel for a few weeks on hand before I have to siphon from our vehicles which we keep over half a tank in the winter.
