Pretty gutsy move by Townshend to do the windmill given the fact that his hand is bandaged from when he was impaled by the pitchbar on his guitar doing the exact same move.

Townshend was kind of fucked up on this tour. He'd had urethritis that wouldn't go away - that'll mess with everything - severe tinnitus in the ears, impaled his hand on the bender on his Strat and was having a hell of a time staying on the wagon. 45 is a hell of an age; first part of being over the hill and it hits with a vengeance until everything gets fine tuned again...which takes a few years.

I am a massive Simon Philips fan. No question, he's one of the greatest contemporary drummers. Technically gifted and superior in every way. I love everything he does - - - except this! He doesn't get it. No drummer does. Perhaps, I would argue that Kenny got it more (even though he is also technically lacking, as was Keith Moon). I know you have to come into and inject your own stamp, personality etc - but this song and the WHO are all about busy, messy drums that 'sing' the vocal parts. The endless busy fills, just under the verse - is what's all about. It's not about just keeping the tempo on this. Mooney wasn't a patch on the trousers of Philips in terms of technique and all round playing - not in any universe - but he nailed this the way it was supposed to be played. So too did Kenny, mostly. That's why Mooney was a great drummer.

I agree with you about these 2 drummers, that have influenced me a lot since the 80s. Simon's drumming is awesome but he is simply unable (or rather unwilling) to emulate the "messy" or "loony" style of Keith ...

That's why he was Keith Moon, the perfect fit for the WHO and in a class of his own. Just like Simon Philips is. It's all about chemistry, passion and groove. It totally NOT about superiority, such BS.
