I would love to see your 2021 update. The list has changed so much over the years. It has had awesome iterations from people like Tom Ross and Tony Decario!
@@skmd92 I've been playing rack since the release of this video. This is one of the best builds (Prof. Template). Just wonder how many lands are the optimal...
@@floose I think Tom was running 24 which is where I'll start. Extra lands let's you retrace ravens crime and also use the mana to activate your man lands
Thanks Professor. My version of this deck owned at my lgs. No one saw mono black coming for them. You're a great teacher. Your videos have made me a better magic player.
Tolarian Community College only thing i can think of is to splash some color with enchantment hate, probably white, but it's not too practical. Or we could just hope they make some bizarre black anti-enchant card
Derek Kirwan White splash can be quite potent, lingering souls, path to exile and some of the best hate cards in the format like stony silence, runed halo, disenchant and oring.
For the brewers out there: If you are having trouble finding your Snaring Bridges or Pack Rats, may I suggest the black Augur (of Skulls). Mostly a combo-ish card but having two abilities makes it quite flexible.
I've heard from the rumour mill that we'll be seeing a reprint in Modern Masters 2017, although the rumour mill tends to be wrong quite a lot. I'd take it with a grain of salt.
As a person who has played casual/kitchen table, EDH, & modern for a long time I don't feel like these videos are any new information to me, but I find myself listening to these videos multiple times each! I think the largest value I get from these is the really nice budget minded view point. PLEASE make this kind of video a long term staple of your channel! (along with product reviews & accessory reviews. LOVING both of those genres of videos you do, too!)
Followed this video and built my first ever modern deck, the budget version, and love it.....starting to build it up into a full version now. Many thanks mate, please keep these great videos going and love the channel. :-)
I just built the deck, my first control deck. As for now, I'm really loving the discard strategy as well as the win conditions. Being more a fast and agressive player (Mono-Black Aggro in Standard and Red Deck Wins in Modern), I'm delighted of how it really flows. Great video!
Charles-David Tremblay Cheers! I'm so glad you enjoy the deck. I absolutely love it (and it sounds like my play style is similar to yours, RDW/Burn being a favorite of mine as well).
First of all I want to thank you for the hard work you've done putting these videos together, my wife and I just love them. We are fairly new to magic, we've only been playing for a couple of months, but we have the basics down. I've even attended a Friday night magic and did fairly well. My wife loves the vampire cards I used to make her lifelink deck. So I was wondering if you can make a video of your suggestion for a vampire themed deck.
I was trying to return to Magic in 2015 and I found this video. My first step on Magic was in 1998 when I was 8 years old and I stopped in 2005. I usually played with Mono Black control since than, and I was looking for a Mono Black option to play with in Modern and this deck was the right option, thank you! I love this deck.
Built this (the budget version) on MTGO and I'm not disappointed! Although I switched the pack rats for waste nots, since I found that the rats made me not want to small pox which set me back more than it helped.
We've really come a long way since Lili of the Veil was one of the most powerful walkers in the game. Even Jace the Mind Sculptor is legal in Modern now, and both of them don't see as much play as you'd think.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I used it as one of my guides to building my own 8-Rack deck to get my feet wet in Modern. This is very reminiscent of a deck I built and enjoyed when Stronghold was new. It ran Ensnaring Bridge and Bottomless Pit among other things, so this is right up my alley. Haven't gotten a chance to play it yet because there's very little Modern action in my area, but I've seen a few people play it casually so I know I'll get a chance to bust it out at some point.
Why not ask a couple of your friends to see if they can beat you with a standard deck? Only deck with a real chance to win is just as in modern mono-red burn.
Woooooow, many thanks, man! I simply love monoblack discard, but I can't afford those Lilianas! I already own thoughtseize and inquisition, using on my WB tokens, and now I will buy those alternatives to build my discard deck! Your channel is awesome! :)
Dimir Mill :D I'm still perfecting mine, but it's just about done. Similar to your 8-Rack, it focuses on controlling what your opponent does via creature removal, and discarding. With fog bank and wall of frost for defense, and counter and removal spells, the only thing your opponent can do is to watch in horror as their library slowly whittles away...
This was the first tiered deck I built for modern. I traded for Liliana and bought her at 60$ (now she's up to 120 some places). The deck really taught me how to "read the meta" and taught me how other decks worked and thought (since I got see their hands). Great deck. I think it might be time to think about bringing in some number of bridges again (despite tom ross' success without them) and moving away from the attrition style to a "value" killer build (kill planewalkers, turn off abilities, bust enchantments). We will see. Anyway, can't recommend the deck enough if you really want to "learn" magic.
finally, someone giving Blackmail some love, it's always been underrated, to the point of always wondering why so many people scoff at it. Obviously first or 2nd turn it's not that great, but after that, it's outstanding as they almost certainly have 3 or less cards if you have played any discard on them since the start.
Can you give us some tips and tricks on keeping an eye on pricewatch? You mention certain cards that are expected to rise or drop in price, with causes like standard rotation. I do not expect a guide that covers everything completely, but there are probably some patterns to look out for, know what I mean? Loving your videos man, keep it up!
Get your Blackmail copies today. Their price has been climbing lately alongside this deck's popularity. Also, in my opinion, Wastenot is a little awkward as a mainboard for this deck. Against RDW, Affinity, Fish, and other quick low CMC decks, it sort of becomes a dead card. Of course, you could combo it with the Dakmor/Raven's Crime function, but it's a fairly limited set up. Overall, this deck is simply a blast to play. This video is spot on with the budget options. As long as you can drop your Racks and Snares, then you can beat just about any Top Tier deck at your local shop. It feels satisfyingly evil to lock out your opponent. Personally, I'm working on getting my Liliana playsets. The best prices I can find are 4 for $200. Yikes! Great vid. Love your channel!
That new format that they're starting next year is gonna be wild. I'm on board, more than not, b/c I don't really care too much for the core sets anyway. 2 set blocks twice a year sounds pretty cool to me.
I'm testing Geralf's Messenger as a playset in this deck. I have a weakness for zombies and it can be pretty great with Smallpox. Play the Messenger turn three, target opponent loses 2 life. Next turn, sac it with Smallpox, trigger its Undying having opponent lose 2 more life. Might not seem that great but with the other combos, yeah, can do some damage.
Really love this deck. It has so much room for modifications. Been trying out a ton of things with it. Crucible of worlds for me has had some really funny interactions with it with dredge from dakmor.
joshua millard If we can just figure out how to easily and reliably handle Leyline of Sanctity then this deck would become such a genuine threat. I've been fooling around with a sideboard that transforms it into B/W just to get enchantment removal.
This is a threat I will need to look into. Thanks for the heads up about that. So far something hilarious I tried is using crucible of worlds with Ghost Quarter and Smallpox. Creates a strange interaction with certain decks. Very much a local meta thing but it's hilarious when they run out of basic to search for.
Great video, I love how you present the budget options. Two observations (completely subjective): (1) I don't think Liliana of the Veil will be reprinted any time soon; (2) I'm not convinced that the new block structure will make things more expensive. We will still have four expansion sets per year. Each set will have a shorter lifespan, but prices should compensate for this.
I love Orzhov decks. Would you consider making a decklist for that guild? It doesn't have to be budget or anything. Anyways, good job on this video. Always happy to see you upload something.
Can I get another opinion on my own personal budget 8 rack deck? The list is- 4 augur of skull 4 blackmail 4 bojuka bog 4 dakmor salvage 2 duress 2 languish 4 ravens crime 4 shrieking affliction 2 small pox 1 smother 4 the rack 4 underworld dreams 4 victim of the night 4 wrench mind 12 swamps 1 Liliana of the veil (happen to have one I opened in a innistrad pack a while ago) Total cost (w/ Liliana): $136 Total cost (w/out Liliana): $46
Professor, i have a question. Could you please show these modern decks in play? Like do a tournament style plays with these? I think it would let newer players learn.
I build an izzet artifact deck, wedge makes a vid on it. I JUST finish building my 8-rack deck, you make a vid on it. LOL xD Waste Not is an ENGINE for this deck!! If you drop it turn two, it's absurdly good! I'm running 3 in my deck right now.
$60 for Liliana. If only... reprinted in MM3 and still $110. Love me my budget 8-rack deck though. This video was the one that inspired me to build it. Who needs friends when you have wins?
Thank you for this video; it got me interested in Modern! I'm planning to build a set with physical cards, but until they come in I'm playing with one on MTGO which I got for 10ish dollars. (Admittedly, I had to replace The Rack with Liliana's Caress because, well, The Racks would have put me above ten dollars!)
Such an awesome deck, I run two waste nots in mine along with two dark confidants. The only issue I have with this deck is that there is no way to look in your library or re shuffle to get lands and other cards you need.
bought my entire playset from my LGS for just $49, I watched that price like a hawk for an entire year until I finally saw it level out at $12.25, no regrets
Also, Dimir Machinations. I've been using them in place of my missing ensnaring bridge. A little slow but works if you can't get a whole play set of bridges.
Yes! I remember watching your other "modern on a budget" videos and thinking that 8 Rack would be perfect. I'm currently trying to scrape together some change to get the 4x Lilianas I need to finish the deck.
So I'm unsure if this is a good alternative to ensnaring bridge but noetic scales seems like a good substitute. It will also allow you to get rid of their threats that do happen to get through a bit more permanently. The only real downside i see is it may slow down the damage off of the rack and shrieking affliction.
I've been wanting to build this for a long time now, but the cost of a single card has been the entirety of my deck building budget. Nice to see a budget version that is more in reach. What would you recommend as budget friendly suggestions for the sideboard? As well as suggestions for what to swap out as needed. I've already got playsets of Thoughtseize, Pack Rat, and Mutavault. As well as a couple Urborg's.
how you doing? I was wondering which cards would you put into the sideboard for the actual metagame. I'm trying to homebrew my sideboard but i really don't have many ideas except for the damnations, fulminators and nihil spellbomb. Thanks, and i do like your videos! Very helpful!
Alexander Xerxes Marban I'm going to talk about it eventually, but I want to take time to consider these upcoming changes and hear other people's opinions before I start talking about it.
You put together some really awesome decks, Oh great elder of The Gathering. But I was wondering, because you put together such good decks, which I am looking into buying of course, have you ever thought of selling your own decks to make the money back you've spent at all? Or even Tolarian College merchandise such as Card Sleeves? Also, I think what would be really great to see from you In a video is you playing a game of Magic The Gathering, and possibly doing commentary over it to walk us through how you used your cards and such.
I know you have a ton of requests for decks, but i was hoping for a modern affinity deck, artifact decks are usualy my favorite type of decks, and since you have a deck list of each color, why not make a colorless decklist? :D
man i love your idea of this deck. i tried doing a blue spin on this deck by putting mind funeral and land destruction, people use fetch lands all the time so what better way to windle down their land count in the deck and other cards that they cant combo from then add tectonic edge to get rid of their lands they got in play. :)
Hey, i like your vidoes, n1 work thumb up! i enjoy this deck and it´s very funny to play with! There are some cards you don´t spoke about.. Liliana´s caress is a very good card in this deck, or painful dilemma for the finisher at the end which is a budget card. but again good work and keep on! :)
I bought this a little bit after the video came out (maybe a year?). I got my liliana's for 60 and traded for the others. She has almost doubled in price since then. Thanks prof!
So Professor....Billy here. I was wondering what you have come to think about Waste Not in this deck. I tried it out myself but didn't find it worked well. I have no Liliana of the Veil, but do run a playset of Damnation (Planar Chaos was my favorite set, so already had those on hand) and I also run a set of Liliana's Caress.
i was messing with this deck a bit and for newer players who might want to have a few more creatures on the field you could add vampires to replace some of the pricier cards i would recommend bloodgast so if you discard him you could just bring him back and he can be a chump for days vampire nighthawk because flying deathtouch and lifelink for 3 is badass nocturnis to pump vampires and maybe antwon the rune sage just to clear the board a bit so even if your opponet gets out big bad guys they die because there not vampires
I was always tenative about filling their yard up! Maybe I overestimated the danger in doing so... Leyline is a big problem though. Maybe the deck could run a few white shocks and pains for some Erases in the board or something.
I made my modern deck and its a blue/red monks/warriors/flying deck and its really OP i might say cause it has a lot of instants and sorcery cards that cast damage at a creature or player
I don't currently have any copies of The Rack, so I'm gonna give Quest for the Nihil Stone a chance to see some play in it's place. We'll see how it goes. :)
I run Pox in Legacy and you can still play a fairly competitive mono-black Pox build in Legacy for around $60. And the best part, most of the cards in this video are in the budget Legacy version. Being an avid as well as rabid control player I recommend pox for Legacy and this would be a good starting point for a budget Legacy build.
Actually I'm about to film it now. My internet connection is OK so after 9 hours of uploading it might by on youtube. I built it for my 9 year old daughter actually.
The legacy version of the deck is really awesome and a little bit more competetive...including nether spirit, nether void , cursed scroll, hymn to tourarch and of course the great card innocent blood... but all in all its the same idea based on the card smallpox.
Thanks for a thought-provoking channel! New player here. So far, I like the game. However: scanning a few leading Modern decks I see that they all cost over $1000. How much success can this $30 deck expect to have against players who have spent hundreds or thousands?
Nice. Indeed, with the expensive version is still easy build and could play on legacy, beacause is mono color and don't need, Duallands or Shocklands, and the Fetchlands is still a opption.
18 Swamp 2 Bojuka Bog 4 Mind Rot 4 Wrench Mind 4 Duress 4 Smallpox 4 The Rack 4 Shrieking Affliction 4 Raven's Crime 3 Geth's Verdict 3 Murderous Cut 4 Blood Artist 2 Desecration Demon This is my list, I don't know if it's any good.
I was thinking of building this deck, although not owning 4 ensnaring bridges, I was thinking of adding 4 Lingering Souls instead. I do have the fetches and godless shrine to make this happen, and has some synergies with Lili. Do you think this could be a good idea, or splashing a second colour isn't what the deck was made for? Thanks a lot for the video!
I use a rakdos build mainly because of blightning and lightning bolt, I'm also running Liliana's caress turn 1 rack effect turn 2 Liliana's caress turn 3 blightning 9 damage done it's gross
XxHikidashixX It's not an outdated source, however you make the mistake of only looking at the banned cards. A card such as Hymn doesn't fit the criteria to even be in Modern, so of course it's not banned. Hint: Look at the sets that are legal for Modern and then look at the last non-FTV reprint of Hymn.
thanks for the great deck idea! I think one more card would make this deck a lot better thought. a play set of pyhrexian obliterator's to stop other creatures from attacking you unless the person playing against you wants to remove permanents! its going to make the deck $100 more expensive but its going to stop most creature based deck or at least put them in a bad situation.
Can you please recommend me a MTG card shop? In The Czech Republic 2:15 Schrieking affliction cost 1,6$ instead of 0,3$. The prices here are 3 to 5 times more expensive!
Any chance we'll see gameplay videos from you in the future? Maybe playing various modern decks you've shown us against eachother? I'd love to see a Merfolk vs 8 Rack or Infect vs Red Deck Wins, so on so forth.
SnowCoveredPlainswalker Gameplay videos are very hard to film. I have been trying to brainstorm a clever, effective way to do so, but as of yet I'm not sure how I could go about it and maintain both interest and quality. Heck, even the Pros have trouble filming gameplay.
Tolarian Community College Well, you seem to be a good player and builder based on your videos, I'm really just getting back into the game for the first time since I was a kid (7th edition) I uploaded a deck tech video, would you mind giving advice and opinions on it? If it's not any trouble.
How do you feel about radiant fountain in this deck? It seems like you're likely to take a lot of damage early and being mono color, running a set of colorless only lands doesn't tax the mana base too much.
I would love to see your 2021 update. The list has changed so much over the years. It has had awesome iterations from people like Tom Ross and Tony Decario!

Can you teach us how to prepare for friday night magic?
I am digging the production value of this channel ever since you changed the name into a college. Good work.
Can I get another opinion on my own personal budget 8 rack deck?
The list is-
4 augur of skull
4 blackmail
4 bojuka bog
4 dakmor salvage
2 duress
2 languish
4 ravens crime
4 shrieking affliction
2 small pox
1 smother
4 the rack
4 underworld dreams
4 victim of the night
4 wrench mind
12 swamps
1 Liliana of the veil (happen to have one I opened in a innistrad pack a while ago)
Total cost (w/ Liliana): $136
Total cost (w/out Liliana): $46

TCC! what's your stance on Maro's 'Metamorphosis'? I think a video commentary of these radical changes is right up your alley!
Just thinking, it would be a great to update this video with more accurate prices now and with new cards
I know you have a ton of requests for decks, but i was hoping for a modern affinity deck, artifact decks are usualy my favorite type of decks, and since you have a deck list of each color, why not make a colorless decklist? :D
Lol! Came back to this video and noticed that Necrogen Mists basically shot up to $3 each within just the past month about.
I know its been a while but its like $15 now
My friend plays this deck with only one liliana. It is awesome and infuriating. I love it :)
A considerable card for the deck is Brain Maggot from Journey into Nyx. Its nowhere near as good as Thoughtseize, but its still a okay alternative.
Sweet deck list I'm hoping to get into modern soon because standard is getting soo annoying
man i love your idea of this deck. i tried doing a blue spin on this deck by putting mind funeral and land destruction, people use fetch lands all the time so what better way to windle down their land count in the deck and other cards that they cant combo from then add tectonic edge to get rid of their lands they got in play. :)
A Sangromancer could do miracles in this deck, imo.
Funny that you said Lilliana was a prime target for reprint very soon, and finally now in MM3 :D
You're doing a great work on your channel, man.
No hymn to tourach love. My favourite for this type of deck.
it's not modern legal
Megrim is also a nice addition to this deck. Fairly cheap, too.
Love these old videos.
Ive been playing this so much before the new m15 enchantment, good improve to the deck!
To bad Liliana is expensive now
I bought this a little bit after the video came out (maybe a year?). I got my liliana's for 60 and traded for the others. She has almost doubled in price since then. Thanks prof!
Its almost 80 as of this moment on card Kingdom lol...playset = 320$ ha...but I wanna eat
I feel like this deck has become a lot more viable with the new bans! Awesome
K.T. Cuffari This deck is VERY viable. It has only one problem: Leyline of Sanctity. If it weren't for that bloody leyline...
I was always tenative about filling their yard up! Maybe I overestimated the danger in doing so... Leyline is a big problem though. Maybe the deck could run a few white shocks and pains for some Erases in the board or something.
Tolarian Community College Why not just run some dual lands so you can easily splash for sideboard answers to Leyline?
Liliana Defiant Necromancer would be a great alternative to of the veil at a significant price drop
For those living in the Uk and wanting to purchase the budget version of 8 rack, you will have to spend £50.66.
Source of prices: Manaleak
Any link to that 60 dollar deck?
Actually I'm about to film it now. My internet connection is OK so after 9 hours of uploading it might by on youtube. I built it for my 9 year old daughter actually.
killedxcake I got my $60 pox deck up on my channel if you want to check it out.
Looks great, thanks!
welcome. I could have gone a little higher if I threw in a few bridges but I wanted it to be as low as possible while still being competitive.
The legacy version of the deck is really awesome and a little bit more competetive...including nether spirit, nether void , cursed scroll, hymn to tourarch and of course the great card innocent blood... but all in all its the same idea based on the card smallpox.
I play red black 8 rack. I added in blightining, lightning bolt, kholaghans command, and a blood moon.
I just built this deck to take to my lgs. Thanks!
Thanks for a thought-provoking channel! New player here. So far, I like the game. However: scanning a few leading Modern decks I see that they all cost over $1000. How much success can this $30 deck expect to have against players who have spent hundreds or thousands?
I have budgets and I have full versions of decks. the budgets do surprisingly well.
Nice. Indeed, with the expensive version is still easy build and could play on legacy, beacause is mono color and don't need, Duallands or Shocklands, and the Fetchlands is still a opption.
18 Swamp
2 Bojuka Bog
4 Mind Rot
4 Wrench Mind
4 Duress
4 Smallpox
4 The Rack
4 Shrieking Affliction
4 Raven's Crime
3 Geth's Verdict
3 Murderous Cut
4 Blood Artist
2 Desecration Demon
This is my list, I don't know if it's any good.
I absolutely love the deck and the music!
I am gonna put necrogen mist in my red, green and black instand/sorcery/token deck
Awesome vid I'm running running a rakdos variant of 8 rack with kroxa :D
really enjoying your modern videos, could you please post up more modern decks? ones that are competitive and to your liking of course. :)
Would love to see a 2022 update? Thinking about getting into older formats...
That line at the end was so funny
I love the outtro here. xD Also, I was surprised you didn't list Hymn to Tourach (in place of Wrench Mind)
Because Hymn to Tourach is one of those "modern-legal" cards that everybody can just forget?
I can't tell of that is sarcasm or an honest response. I checked the ban list for modern and Hymn to Tourach isn't banned.
XxHikidashixX Hymn to Tourach is not Modern legal. You can verify that (and any cards legality for any format) here: magiccards.info/vma/en/122.html
Tolarian Community College So archive.wizards.com/Magic/tcg/resources.aspx?x=judge/resources/sfrmodern is an outdated source? :\
Sorry then.
I like rewatching this video... because of the background music lol I've totally associated to Liliana
Great video. Love the budget alternative idea too!
Want more Modern Stuff !
Great Video as always.
:*
It seems Onslaught fetches are confirmed reprint in Khans. Will you make an economic analysis on getting them or maybe investing in them?
