WW2 planes had guns that shot through the propeller. But if I’m remembering correctly, the propeller was connected to the gun in some way, where if you held down the trigger, the gun would only fire at certain intervals based off of where the propeller was in its rotation.
Certain planes in ww2 had them yes but it was more common In ww1 and if I remember right the Germans made a firing interrupter for when the prop was in the way of the gun and the French had a guy try putting metal on the back of the prop he died
That's exactly how it worked. That mechanism gave birth to the fighter planes as we know them.
Yeah, and it was done that way to prevent the bullets from damaging the propeller. Because, spoiler propellers are not bulletproof.
Was invented during WWI.
@@spudz7405 The Germans had a couple of designs where the gun barrel went through the center of the crankshaft.

Matt has Mikey secretly cloned. 😂
Props to whoever came up with this idea 😂

Simply Safe is a weird gem of a sponsor if they thought "propeller mounted to a car axle you're going to shoot at? Sure, we'll sponsor that."
"Your safety is their top priority. Matt's safety is negotiable."
It's about as safe and reliable as their product line, I'd call it a match.

I thought for sure this was The Final Affliction channel. Thought he had a 50/50 chance of living.
This dilemma was encountered in WWI when machine guns were first attached to airplanes. The propellers were shot off, which is why a synchronization/interrupter mechanism (which would temporarily prevent a gun from firing when a propeller blade was in front of the barrel) was developed for aircraft firearms for WWII combat aircraft (or in some cases such as some German fighters, a cannon barrel came out through the shaft of the propeller). It is a well-known historical fact that airplane-mounted firearms shot off/destroyed propellers.
That said, airplane gun calibers were much more substantial than .223 or .308, and fired at a much higher rate of fire.
Some of the earlier ones were closer to 308 in caliber. I'd have to Google it though
Or you can do it another way which existed at the same time as synchroniser - just make prop bulletproof. Yeah, it will still sustain damage and a whole bunch of bullets are being wasted, but if you have literally nothing else...
It was pretty much 7 mm to 30 mm climber so yeah

@@razormonkey5000I've been watching from the beginning of the channel as well as off the ranch (Now Matt Carricker) and yes he definitely has formal training and quite a few different kinds of training. And he is pretty damn accurate. A lot of the time when he is shooting fast and misses I feel like it's to be funny for the video. But when he takes his time with shots they hit 95% of the time.

Great content. This is why I subscribed to Demo Ranch awhile back.
I remember when I was a kid my grandpa would tell me stories about how when he was in the Soviet Army part of his job was timing the guns behind the propeller to fire in between the rotations. Wish I asked him more questions about that stuff while he was still alive, like if that was during WWII or after (born 1926, so would have been 18/19 at the end of the war), and if he ever actually flew them or if he was just in charge of mechanical. Passed away in 2015 and his mind was gone for about a decade before that already. Don't take your grandparents for granted, ask them as much about their lives while you can.
Makes me sad. My dad was in WWII in Asia, and I'm 50 years old. I also did not get to ask him so many questions. He apparently ran a lot of classified missions with the Army Air Corps.
You emigrated to the US?
Same with parents too. Learn all you can from them, before it's too late. Take it from someone that lost all 4 grandparents, and both parents... Life is too short to hold grudges. Life is too short to spend it angry. Don't let stupid arguments get in the way of spending time with your family. Live a life full of love, and happiness...
There are 2 things I will caution about, both of which will happen during one single event.
In the case of shooting enough holes in one of the propellers it is highly likely the tip will snap off shooting it off in a random direction, danger in just about any direction as it can ricochet off or even be sent up and fall down in a unknown area.
Next thing to worry about after that happens is the van, you now have a unbalanced blade spinning at speed, this can lead to it rocking the van off of the blocks, the fan deflecting and spinning itself apart spewing more shrapnel. Best case the intact propeller deflects and gets stuck cutting into the van without throwing around additional shrapnel.
Video is very entertaining, I just don't want to see any one get seriously hurt.
Yep, great minds. I just wrote essentially the same thing.
Mat isnt stupid he knows this is incredibly dangerous
Not a random direction, physics tells us it will fly of in one of the directions it is spinning.

Hello, this is Tina Partin. I got this message with a cell number after I posted a comment on ur propeller video.
Hey , just wanna say I love you as a person. Been watching your videos since I was 16 and your fun energy while being able to do a good job is something I’ve always admired. Keep going strong 💪
Airplane, don’t forget that airplanes used to have a linkage gear to fire bullets though the propellor without hitting it
Not at first it was the pilots
@@jasonbeasley2899with pistols and hand dropped bombs.
Yeah that was one of two ways of doing it. Linkage gear or fire interuptor. But that was so the bullets didn’t destroy the prop. And don’t quote me on this one but i believe they used 50 call
Hey, mechanic here, it's got an open diff so if you pinch off the propeller brake line and apply the brakes it will hold the wheel in place and send all of the power to the propeller, caution: may wreck the diff, may also spin the propeller fast enough where it Flys off
Could have mounted the prop on the driver side too and changed the direction of thrust so he doesn't have to shoot with all that wind and dirt blowing his direction
It will definitely burn up the spider gears in the diff if they run it long enough like that lol
I looked for this comment before they even put the prop on
@arturojessop6835 but then the prop will be flying their way if it busts loose
This was a great video and very educational I believe a little bit scary but I'm glad you guys did it because I've wondered about how that would work as well so thank you for doing this and I can't wait to see more from you.
I love this channel. No one has dumber ideas than mat! Looking at you mr indoor living room steel target range... another banger. Keep making em and we'll keep watching em.
If the van has an open differential in the rear axle, you can lock the brake on one side, and the other side will spin at twice the RPM. That could help it shift gears and spin stupid fast!
Yes. Also put it in max gear, probably don’t need that much torque

How lucky we are that no one responsible for making this video has heard of the synchronization gear so they would risk their lives to make a highly entertaining video about a question that was answered over a hundred years ago.
I'm a pilot and this is one of the craziest ideas I have ever seen. I love it keep it up this will answer a question many pilots have.
Every pilot in existence has wanted to throw a banana or a hotdog into the propeller just to see what happens, but no one wants to pay for it.
how will their cessna hold up in apocalyptic gunfire from rival ground gangs?
Except this thing was never spinning near fast enough
Fellow pilot here (Robin DR400 flying in the U.K.)
Typical RPM for a fixed pitch metal prop would be around 2800.

Bro?? Are you alive 🤔. I been coming to UA-cam every day for a week expecting to see a new video and everytime I see nothing but disappointment, heartbreak and crushed hopes and dreams. FML.
Sketchy is putting it lightly
In WWI. the idea of shooting forward through the blades of the propeller for the airplane became a problem. The fixed the problem with a synchronizer so that the gun would shoot between the blades, not physically through the blades.
Don't forget the other solution people came up with, where they literally just put armor steel plates on the prop so that the bullets would ricochet in random directions and hopefully not back at the pilot or anything structurally important on the plane.
I'm pretty sure machine guns on airplanes run a cam off the crank, so that would time the machine gun to make hitting the prop almost impossible.
@xfrobie9773
Yes, that was one of the early attempts to shoot through the propeller! It didn't work very well as I remember.
@@mahbriggsyou were there!?
Fun fact. The propeller synchro was a German invention. Only after a German plane was recovered did the allies start doing the same.
You guys are f**kin crazy!!! I love it, keep up the good work!!!
@DemolitionRanch
The van probably has an open differential, which would explain the speed changing randomly, as the power transfers between each side.
You could get precise control with a limited, or preferably, locked differential. Made better with a manual transmission. It would be a constant speed based on gear and RPM.
You know, for the extra scientific results. Loving these ideas.
Or keep the other side from rotate
Fun fact:
the "machine gun" mounted on a WWI biplane was actually semi automatic and used a trigger rod actuated by the engine's cam shaft to pull the trigger once for every second revolution (so the gun's rpm was directly tied to half the engine's rpm) to prevent pilots from accidentally shooting their own propellers.
The trigger the pilot used simply engaged a linkage connecting the engine to the gun.
This design (or something similar) was used on all fighter planes untill the guns got moved to the wings of the plane and could clear the propeller.
yes we know everyone knows this as evidenced by the 40 people who commented it lol
@@zachmoyer1849 yeah, I comment after the video but before I delved into the comments.
Ww1 pilots were instructed to say the magic word before firing the guns. Thus, the bullets avoided the blades. It's that simple. And the magic word was "eggplants" now you know.

I feel like the resort should be a gunner's amusement park, where people can go to shoot targets like airplane propellers bolted to old cars and crazy things like that. Seems TOTALLY safe.
Prop. Planes only fly by Displacing the air in front of them. If you feel wind pushing you away from the front of the prop, it is Reversed. Glad to see you and yours are still alive....
If it was on properly it would suck things in too. Better to have it in reverse.
Yep! They needed it in reverse
Props can be in push or pull configurations. All depends on the aircraft. For example the Cessna sky master has both.

Best idea in a very long time
Some quick math. In order to stop every bullet, a propeller should rotate fast enough to encounter with it as bullet pass through. Taking a length of a bullet ~ 2 cm and a speed ~ 800 m/s we get 25 mks for propeller to hit the bullet. So its angular velocity must be around 1/25mks =40 000 rotations per second (20 000 assuming it has 2 wings), which gives more than a million rotations per minute.
Handburger was a good laugh
This is like watching a shoestring budget Mythbusters episode and I love it!
