    WW2 planes had guns that shot through the propeller. But if I’m remembering correctly, the propeller was connected to the gun in some way, where if you held down the trigger, the gun would only fire at certain intervals based off of where the propeller was in its rotation.

    • @spudz7405

      Certain planes in ww2 had them yes but it was more common In ww1 and if I remember right the Germans made a firing interrupter for when the prop was in the way of the gun and the French had a guy try putting metal on the back of the prop he died

    This dilemma was encountered in WWI when machine guns were first attached to airplanes. The propellers were shot off, which is why a synchronization/interrupter mechanism (which would temporarily prevent a gun from firing when a propeller blade was in front of the barrel) was developed for aircraft firearms for WWII combat aircraft (or in some cases such as some German fighters, a cannon barrel came out through the shaft of the propeller). It is a well-known historical fact that airplane-mounted firearms shot off/destroyed propellers.
    That said, airplane gun calibers were much more substantial than .223 or .308, and fired at a much higher rate of fire.

    • @elementalist1984
      @elementalist1984 25 днів тому +6

    I remember when I was a kid my grandpa would tell me stories about how when he was in the Soviet Army part of his job was timing the guns behind the propeller to fire in between the rotations. Wish I asked him more questions about that stuff while he was still alive, like if that was during WWII or after (born 1926, so would have been 18/19 at the end of the war), and if he ever actually flew them or if he was just in charge of mechanical. Passed away in 2015 and his mind was gone for about a decade before that already. Don't take your grandparents for granted, ask them as much about their lives while you can.

    There are 2 things I will caution about, both of which will happen during one single event.
    In the case of shooting enough holes in one of the propellers it is highly likely the tip will snap off shooting it off in a random direction, danger in just about any direction as it can ricochet off or even be sent up and fall down in a unknown area.
    Next thing to worry about after that happens is the van, you now have a unbalanced blade spinning at speed, this can lead to it rocking the van off of the blocks, the fan deflecting and spinning itself apart spewing more shrapnel. Best case the intact propeller deflects and gets stuck cutting into the van without throwing around additional shrapnel.
    Video is very entertaining, I just don't want to see any one get seriously hurt.

    In WWI. the idea of shooting forward through the blades of the propeller for the airplane became a problem. The fixed the problem with a synchronizer so that the gun would shoot between the blades, not physically through the blades.

    • @xfrobie9773
      @xfrobie9773 28 днів тому +12

      Don't forget the other solution people came up with, where they literally just put armor steel plates on the prop so that the bullets would ricochet in random directions and hopefully not back at the pilot or anything structurally important on the plane.

    • @6P3-MK4
      @6P3-MK4 28 днів тому +3

      I'm pretty sure machine guns on airplanes run a cam off the crank, so that would time the machine gun to make hitting the prop almost impossible.

    The van probably has an open differential, which would explain the speed changing randomly, as the power transfers between each side.
    You could get precise control with a limited, or preferably, locked differential. Made better with a manual transmission. It would be a constant speed based on gear and RPM.
    You know, for the extra scientific results. Loving these ideas.

  • @DH-xw6jp
    @DH-xw6jp 28 днів тому +9

    Fun fact:
    the "machine gun" mounted on a WWI biplane was actually semi automatic and used a trigger rod actuated by the engine's cam shaft to pull the trigger once for every second revolution (so the gun's rpm was directly tied to half the engine's rpm) to prevent pilots from accidentally shooting their own propellers.
    The trigger the pilot used simply engaged a linkage connecting the engine to the gun.
    This design (or something similar) was used on all fighter planes untill the guns got moved to the wings of the plane and could clear the propeller.

      Ww1 pilots were instructed to say the magic word before firing the guns. Thus, the bullets avoided the blades. It's that simple. And the magic word was "eggplants" now you know.

    Some quick math. In order to stop every bullet, a propeller should rotate fast enough to encounter with it as bullet pass through. Taking a length of a bullet ~ 2 cm and a speed ~ 800 m/s we get 25 mks for propeller to hit the bullet. So its angular velocity must be around 1/25mks =40 000 rotations per second (20 000 assuming it has 2 wings), which gives more than a million rotations per minute.
