Once this series is completed I hope Biblaridion turns around and says "Surprise, this series has actually been a series of biology lectures!" For as popular as the series is and how effectively it's broadened the audience for speculative evolution, I hope the ease and entertainment with which all of these concepts in evolutionary biology are conveyed goes on to be Alien Biospheres' biggest legacy.

Burpopo put out some amazing content, integrating a lot of cool critters in the foreground and the background. The lighting was a little weird, but that may have just been to sell the realism of the creatures themselves, which worked well in my opinion. Why is it called "fitness"? Fitness, I would take as meaning an individual's ability to survive and compete in their niche (a fast cheetah or tall giraffe, for example), but he uses it in the meaning of having children and grandchildren. It's just an odd use of the word.

    • @Mr.Nichan
      @Mr.Nichan Рік тому

@@Aethuviel It's because the expression "survival of the fittest" has been associated with natural selection, so he's using the word "fitness" to describe exactly what natural selection selects for, which is the ability of patterns to continue to exist and/or become more common over time. Biological evolution mostly happens over timescales longer than any individual organism's life, so the patterns whose survival is selected for over evolutionary timescales are genes, not individual organisms. (No matter how fast a cheetah is, and individual cheetah won't past millions of years, but the genes that make it fast might.) When the survival of genes is what matters, the survival of individuals only matters because of how it allows them more time to reproduce and help their descendents.
Wikipedia claims that this us the standard biological definition of "fitness", and that Henry Spencer even had precisely this meaning in mind when he coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" to avoid the way Darwin's term "natural selection" personifies nature and makes it sound like some conscious choice is going on; however, pehaps because of it's wording, I think a lot of people agree it is more likely to lead to misconceptions about what is selected for (as opposed to the term "natural selection", which is completely uninformative as to this point on its own, and so can't be blamed for the misconceptions that happen with it anyway), and perhaps because Henry Spencer tried to apply the theories to humans, it is more associated with "Social Darwinism", which, at least in its lessaiz faire capitalist interpretation, perhaps focuses too much on individuals. (The fascist/racist version of "Social Darwinism" is actually more in line with real biology, I think, much as that dismay most people. That's not to say other elements of racist and fascist/Nazi biology/anthropology are accurate, because many are completely crazy, and others are just false or largely false if not actually crazy. It also doesn't necessarily mean that racist fascistic societies have more fitness than liberal capitalistic ones, which brings up the interesting point that, while natural selection can theoretically operate on human societies, this is actually fundamentally independent of how it acts on human genes, and also probably greatly perturbed by human conscious thought, which works faster than natural selection and can be done collectively.)

I've been thinking on this idea since the Rainforests episode. It's a _very_ easy path to develop carnivory, because every step of the way and every scenario poses advantages for the plant:
    - Originally they used the sticky secretion to attach their gametes to passing animals. However, the loose "slime" with gametes can still be washed down with the rain or fail to attach to the target well enough, resulting on them being lost in the dark understory.
    - So a more aggressive adhesive that only detaches the gamete once securely attached to a target provides an advantage.
    - Over time it proves more effective to further strengthen _both_ the adhesive _and_ the gamete "stalk" so the only ones that can rip them off will be larger animals which will travel farther, spreading its offspring over a wider area.
    - This again has the side effect, that smaller animals may get stuck and can't pull themselves loose. This has two possible outcomes, both of which are advantageous: For one, they may serve as easy meals for larger predators who rip them off along with the gamete and bring them to a save spot to eat - which is _very_ likely to be a good place for the new plant to take root - while also leaving some remains and feces near the budding gamete as first nutrients. The other case is that the animal stays stuck and decays on location, its nutrients feeding the plant below. They would benefit a lot from mimicking other chromatophytes to attract nectarivores both for fertilization and later as "prey".
    - From there you can go into extreme variants, like one that may develop a cyclical life style: Initially it produces nectar like its "mundane" cousins. However, once enough of its/the colony's gametangea have been fertilized, they all start secreting the adhesive at the same time, trapping any nectarivores late to the party. As soon as it has caught enough animals to become too obvious to others, it drops the charade and stops producing nectar and pigments, becoming "inert" while it absorbs the nutrients from the cadavers. When it has extracted all it can from its "prey", it then begins to "bloom" again, using its stored nutrients to produce an _irresistibly_ nutritious nectar as a powerful incentive for animals to take the risk it poses...

I'm continually amazed by the level of detail and consideration that goes into these. A couple things of note though (and these are very pedantic things to point out) - the image provided as an example of an ectoparasitoid at 25:21 is actually an endoparasitoid! The image shows a tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, that has been parasitized by the braconid wasp Cotesia congregata - and those white things on the caterpillar's back are the cocoons of the almost fully-developed wasps, not eggs. Additionally, the statement that Virginia opossums are the only marsupial in North America isn't quite accurate, as there are eight opossum species present in Mexico, which is part of North America. Virginia opossums are the only marsupial in North America north of Mexico. Again, excellent work with these. I've been following this series since episode one, and it's given me a lot of fodder for my own worldbuilding.

Mass extinctions are an uncommon but inevitable part of life, apparently. Earth has experienced 5-6 extinction events since life began, each killing off >80% of all species at the time. It just seems to happen periodically, although the causes are different each time: meteor strikes, poisonous gas buildups, solar flares, etc. Sometimes we have no clear idea what happened, only that there was a massive die-off for no known reason. Any project like this should feature at least one such event, if not more.

Amazing episode as always, can't wait for the next one. I gotta say, all the fan works are super cool but I've been completely blown away by the quality of those animations. I can imagine a whole documentary like that and it would be on par with any professional studio-made stuff.

Dude, you can get rich only on continuing this series. You get more views than some official news channels. Please, continue. I know it's a long term project and you have stuff to do, but it's beautiful storytelling and worldbuilding you developed here. It's too beautiful to be lost and discontinued. And at some point the hypewave will end and you will lose on it.

Love the video! Carnivorous plants grow almost exclusively in boggy conditions, where there is plenty of water & CO2 for photosynthesis to occur, but the poor-quality water has little to no essential elements (eg nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium), so the carnivorous plants use carnivory to obtain these essential elements from insects (or in a few unique cases, faecal matter)

    so about the american interchange...
it was weirder than we thought.
north and south america had roughly equal interchange rates, but the major difference lie in which niches got switched.
south americas terror birds, for instance, were far larger than any competing mammal predators, with the exception of omnivorous entelodonts and bears, which were slower and less endurant, allowing the great avians to dominate over mammal carnivores, forcing many to shrink in size. likewise, sloths and glyptodonts were more efficient, better defended, and in the case of the former, able to reach higher than many competitors, and so took spread north. rodents also spread north, possibly due to their teeth, alongside raccoons, armadillos, and at least one toxodont, though a huge number of these south american titans would rapidly die off not 5 million years after their introduction, thanks to an ice-age which the north american fauna, having migrated largely from eurasia through the arctic circle, was far better adapted for
