Talking Super Jeopardy! (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of GameTek's 1991 game show trivia game for the NES, Talking Super Jeopardy!
Talking Super Jeopardy! marked the fourth and final appearance of "everybody's favorite game of answers and questions" on the 8-bit NES, and it is the only one that wasn't developed solely for the console by prolific English development studio Rare.
It is a port of a Dos game that was created by a team of just four people, and instead of following the show's traditional format, it is based on the tournament-style Super Jeopardy! special that aired on ABC over the summer of 1990.
As was the case with the PC version ( • Super Jeopardy! (PC) P... ), the NES version of Talking Super Jeopardy!'s biggest selling point was the talking. The host, who is most definitely not Alex Trebek, introduces rounds and calls out question point values, and the voices are backed by samples of several of the show's iconic audio cues. The playback quality is excellent for the NES, and it's a marked improvement over the piercing, screechy sound of the PC version.
The gameplay is much the same as you'll find in Rare's Jeopardy! games, but I never found it quite as compelling to play. The text parser is a bit too finicky with what it considers an acceptable answer, and the inconsistent level of difficulty posed by the questions can be frustrating. Some of the categories are total cakewalks, while others are loaded with hyper-specific questions on specialized subject matter that feel out of place in a trivia game.
The graphics are also a bit rough. The question screens are all bathed in an eyeball-searing shade of pinkish-red, and though the characters are much better detailed than the ones in Rare's games, their off-putting designs lack the fun charm of Rare's ones.
Talking Super Jeopardy!'s audio is impressive, but the game itself isn't anything special. It's not a bad adaptation of Jeopardy!, but it's also not as good as the three NES games that came before it.

@@zhanefulpAnd what a smell it is lol
Hey I have a question. Would you do Ghost Trick Phantom Detective on Nintendo Switch if you do have the luxury of time?
@@GreenMask-XRGM-27I did the DS version, but they're the same game. Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/CYnxMB5vnPk/v-deo.html
@@NintendoCompleteI know, it’s just that Ghost Trick now is full on HD. I hadn’t seen any recent Ghost Trick Remake long plays yet as of so far….
I remember Summer 1990 when they ran the special Super Jeopardy Tournament on ABC. Top prize: $250,000. Quarterfinals had four players, semifinals were three players, finals were a winner-take-all, losers get place money. "Huck Finn" would have been accepted by a "human judge" or Alex, you shouldn't have gotten dinged for it.
(I once wrote the "You Don't Know Jack" folks about a "Fill in the Blank/Type answer" question where "Ramen" was the correct answer, and I said "Ramen Noodles." The extra "noodles" cost me in-game, and I sent the email pointing out that issue. They agreed to fix that part of the AI for judging to allow it for other players.)
FYI, the reason they had 4 players in the first round, the field was set, but Merv Griffin insisted on a number of last minute additions, reportedly one of those last minute additions was Burns Cameron (the all-time money winner of the original Art Fleming era), in order to fit it in to the 13 weeks, that was the only way. It's also why they increased the point values in order to keep the games from seeming too low scoring.
The clapping 😂😂😂😂😂
I don't remember where I first heard it, but I feel it's worth posting here since the best way of putting the art style really is best described as "Jim Davis on a Xanax binge".
I know, right? It definitely looks Garfield-ish.
This is the first version of the game the host says, "correct" or "incorrect".
Later versions would have the hosts say more than those two words, like "yes", "no" or more.
The sad thing is, most of _Jeopardy's_ contestants these days would lose this game as badly as they do the real thing.
Reading up on past history and people, as well as movies, can really help you become a champion at this game, as well as on the show.
The game has four players instead of the usual three, something that I'm very impressed of.
But that's just for the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the finals would have the usual three.
0:53: “This… is… Super Jeopardy: the beginning of The $250,000 Challenge! Now entering the studio are the champions: a home video collector from Buffalo, NY: Wendy Larkin, who has won $56,870, a talent agent from Albuquerque, NM: Mikel Leopoldo, who has won $64,995, a customer service representative from Daytona Beach, FL: Karen Ogilvie, who has won $76,405, and a video game collector from Chicago, IL: Alex Florentine, whose total winnings are $156,760! First of all we like you to take a look at our super new set which will be our home for the next few weeks to me I hope everyone watching at home enjoys it
And as you notice we have four lecterns for our contestants as opposed to the regular three lecterns
you will see four lecterns throughout the quarterfinal matches
Then when we get to our semi finals in a few weeks we will go back to the regular three
And The winner will receive a cool quarter of $1 million 250,000 to be exact to the winner
So Alex Karen mikel and Wendy welcome back to all of you
And good luck let’s begin the Jeopardy round
As you notice we’re playing for points instead of cash throughout the tournament
I’ll explain how the cash comes into play later as always one daily double here are the categories
29:53
I would like to remind our players and our folks watching tonight the winner move onto the semi finals to be back in the weeks to come getting one step closer to that quarter million dollars
Our runners up won’t be leaving empty-handed and rach will take home with $5000
The category is world history and here is the clue
They all look like Sunday comic characters
pretty cool thank you
Sounds pretty good, unlike the PC version. That one is just constant screeching ear-pain.
Yeah, it sounded terrible, even for pushing PCM over the internal speaker. This is way, way easier on the ears.
The speech chip sounded like as if it was made by Western Technologies.
...hosted by satan on a cb radio.
32:15
Thank you Johnny Gilbert and good evening ladies and gentlemen welcome once again to super Jeopardy it’s crunch time tonight it’s the last game of the semifinals one of these three champions Alex Karen or Mikel Will come back next week to compete in the grand final
And most importantly that $250,000 we’ve been talking about for the last few weeks
I wish you three the best of luck
Let’s get to business with the jeopardy round
As always one dally double is on the board hidden amongst these categories
30:50 it was a very close game going into the final and what a way to set the pace for the other participants
We will first start with Wendy who is in fourth place today with 12,900 what country did she come up with
What is Spain you are correct
The wager
Everything
That’ll take you to 25,800 over to Karen with 13,900 did she come up with Spain she did
Like Wendy also wagered everything
She also doubles her score to 27,800
Now over to mikel he’s not looking happy
Came up with Portugal instead of Spain which we know unfortunately is incorrect and he follow in the footsteps of his opponents by risking everything but drops him down to zero
It’s all up to Alex first did he come up with Spain
He did
Now did he risk enough
He sure did he doubles his score but that doesn’t matter
1:29:24 Quick note third place will receive $25,000 second 50,000 and the winner a quarter of 1 million
In this category US presidents will be decided who will be our super Jeopardy champion and the answer is
1:30:40: “Alex, you had 43,700 points, and did you come up with ‘Who was Franklin Roosevelt?’ No! You put down ‘Who was Axel Foley?’ Your wager: a single point, but it really doesn’t matter! You are the Super Jeopardy champion and you are $250,000 richer! Let’s bring out all the other champions to congratulate Alex Florentine, the video game collector from the Windy City, our $250,000 Super Jeopardy champion! I hope you enjoyed this 13-week Super Jeopardy summer tournament as much as I did! We’ll try to do it all over again next year! So long!”-Alex Trebek.
1:01:16
Thank you Johnny Gilbert ladies and gentlemen good evening well after weeks of cutthroat competition we have come to the grand final of our super Jeopardy invitational tournament and one of these three former champions is going to be a quarter million dollars richer
I would like to take a moment to think all of our participants who are in the audience tonight to see who wins tonight
So Alex Karen and Mikel good luck
Let’s begin this final with the Jeopardy round
As always one daily double and since this is the final these Tough categories
59:18 as I said the last couple weeks the runners up in the semifinal matches will be going home with $10,000 while the winner comes back next week for a possible quarter million dollar payoff who will it be
Final Jeopardy category fictional characters here’s the clue
How come the host at 0:53 looks and sounds nothing like Alex Trebek?
They couldn't be bothered to get Alex?
I’m kind of disappointed that you didn’t show off the Easter Egg in this game.
If you don’t know, when you input the name “Walt Wiebenson” (the father of the game’s programmer David Wiebenson) on the player name screen the game will go to the full dedication screen with a message paying tribute towards Walt.
Oh really? Had I known there was such a thing hidden in there I would've shown it.
31:15 Alex congratulations you are the winner today and you’ll get to come back later in the tournaments for the semifinals as for Karen Mikel and Wendy thank you for being with us you’ll each be going home with $5000 what a game
and next week Johnny who will be with us
Johnny-(announcers for former champions and Ther winnings)
Alex-we will see Alex in a few weeks in the semi finals until next week for all of us here at super Jeopardy so long
Johnny Gilbert-stay tuned for monopoly next on ABC
The dos version was a bigger train wreck than this
The real genuine talking Jeopardy wasn’t even super jeopardy
But Jeopardy featuring Alex Trebek when it was released on the Dos
1:00:00 this takes you back to elementary school and spelling
Karen we start with you what was your response
Who was sneezy and that is correct
You wager everything doubling your score
Mikel you were in second place today
Did you come up with sneezy
You did the wager
Once again everything you are in the lead
But that might all change as we come to Alex
Did he come up with the correct response
He did
I’m afraid to ask did you risk enough
Oh my
Did you ever
Double your score 72,800
Congratulations Alex come on over here
You’ll be back next week for the final against these two opponents Johnny
Karen and Michael thank you for being with us you will each be going home with $10,000
And folks next week call your friends tell everybody you know somebody is going to win a quarter million dollars and we hope you join us next week until then so long
