edit; sorry, i totally forgot to give credit to the video i used! • Paralyzed cat runs awa...
edit 2: Miss Kitty Fantastico commented and told me that this video does not understand the issue surrounding how Briarlight was treated and why her situation was ableist. I’ve talked to her and I’ve come to understand the issue. All money made on this video will be send to a nonprofit for helping those with disabilities.
The issue with Briarlight isn’t that she’s limited in her abilities- it’s more so how she’s treated like she can’t live a happy life /because/ of that disability, which is completely untrue.

Omg y’all are not getting the point.
Briarlight not being able to be “useful” is NOT the problem, I actually really like that she has to stay confined to a small area because I, a real life disabled person, have to to! What’s abelist is that the cats treat her like her life is of no quality, and by saying that she’s bad representation because she is too disabled you are unintentionally feeding into the idea that disabled people have to be “useful” to be “good disabled people”
Warrior cats is not meant to be realistic, and Briarlight not being able to zoom around everywhere means I can actually relate to a character for once. Disability is a spectrum, it’s important to represent that entire spectrum, not just the disabled people who can be “useful”.
By your definition, I AM useless, but I can still be an empowering role model to other disabled people- because my life is of quality, and so was Briarlights!!! You are judging her on your able bodied standards, and shit like that is what’s really harmful to the disabled community.
Next time you criticize the ableism in warriors, please criticize the many times they say Briarlight’s life is not worth living, or that she would be better of dead, and not the fact that she can’t contribute to the clan like an able bodied cat.

for some reason it won't let me edit my comment, but Linky DMed me on tumblr about this, he was completely willing to learn and he’s figured out a better way to call out the ableism in warrior cats while considering all disabled people, no matter how severe our disability is. I’ve always seen people wanting Briarlight to just zoom around everywhere, and go hunting and fighting and implying she should still be a warrior.
But I can’t really see how the clan would let her battle and how she’ll flee from dangerous situations without getting seriously hurt (I’m sorry if that’s ableist). I know how in the video it shows a disabled cat getting around perfectly, but how about in the wild with roots, rocks, sticks and sharp stones on the ground? (it just seems very painful to me to let Briarlight drag herself like that). What if in order to flee from urgent situations Briarlight needs get over something? Sure you can argue that’ll they’ll be cats to help her but what if it’s very very urgent.
But when you bring up how that wouldn’t make sense a lot people seem to say “Realism? You can’t brush this off as realism in a book with Cat religions, the fact that their talking cats, they build dens and have magical herbs!! Warrior cats is never realistic, therefore, this should happen.” But I never really seen realism in stories defined like that.
Like how see shows like Bojack horseman, games like Night In the woods and books like Arc of the Scythe.
Despite them being about talking anthropomorphic animals and having some unrealistic things (Like a human being able to carry a baby horse, how there’s an underwater world, immortality and sci-fi, etc,) but there still heavily realistic like on how mental health and illness is represented, how the characters do/interact/react to things that seem so accurate to how humans would react in those situations and circumstances.
Despite being a world full of animals it’s very humane! A situation which I found realistic was when Snowkit was deaf but Speckletail refused to acknowledge that her son was “broken” (in her eyes), because that’s exactly how my parents reacted to me (but they saw me as “abnormal”, “stupid” and “crazy” lol) and refused to get help for me. Despite them being cats with religious and ghosts and impossible genetics, their interactions and how they act are like real life situations for me. (But what Speckletail did was still ableist)
Like sometimes I think people need know the difference between ableist characters and ableist writing.
I don’t think Speckletail acting this way makes the writing ableist, it just makes her an ableist character. Which having her makes sense for a story where being able-bodied seems to be the norm for the clan (just like in real life sadly). But I think killing Snowkit off could be considered ableist writing since it can be seen as proving the Speckletail and the others’ ableist views and assumptions on him as true.
I feel like fiction shouldn’t be HYPER HYPER accurate to real life, living by the same rules, biology and physics to be considered as “realistic”.
I feel like what makes a story realistic is when they establish all the things in their book that don’t add up in real life and say
“This is how it works in *this* world. This is normal for *them* . these are the boundaries.”
And then start telling the story within these boundaries the story tries to set up for itself.
I’ve seen a good comment describing this:
“I hate when people say shows like BoJack horseman are unrealistic for having things like animal people.
That’s not what realism is in this context. Realism is upholding the boundaries the story sets up. So you’re not gonna see different dimensions in a historical fiction.
BoJack horseman does abide by these standards. Even in 6x15 when we get in bojack’s head. It doesn’t seem out of the ordinary because we’ve seen similar situations. Like that one drug episode from season 1 (I forgot which one) when BoJack sees Diane melting into a monster and he says “Oh s**t I’m still tripping”
That isn’t unrealistic that’s just storytelling.”
(The user was called Big Dog)
I pretty sure there were times where warriors crossed the line with these boundaries, and left us very confused. But you shouldn’t complain when Warriors didn’t start crossing the boundaries and making exceptions again in moments when you wanted them to. You can’t expect a story to give up all those boundaries as a whole just because in some moments they passed it and you wanna see a cat grow wings out of no where and fly out of existence.
Sometimes there are things that I can’t do or have immense trouble doing. For example, School work is a pain in the ass for me and I always need extra time for it. I have very bad Memory, concentration, procrastination, organization, information processing, etc. problems and some jobs might not be fit for me, like the slow repetitive and boring ones.
But that doesn’t mean I’m useless or inferior, of course not, some things just don’t work out and some things do. And that’s not a sign of weakness is it? But of course it’s different for everyone like everyone copes with it differently! But I usually hear from people with problems like mine being unable thrive the same way others can. Sometimes the need for fun things can be really handy in some cases! But really frustrating in others without meds or coping mechanisms.
So I never understood why people were so mad at Jayfeather becoming a medicine cat, since it’s a very important job and it seems like his senses makes him the perfect person for the job. I don’t think Medicine cat is an inferior position or “the easy job anyone can do”, characters like Hollyleaf wasn’t able to do it despite being able-bodied.
But that’s just my view on this, you’re allowed to tell me if I’m wrong 😅

@@lykhra2178 I don’t think I’m rlly understanding your points but I don’t think Briarlight *would* go out into open territory, because the chances of her getting hurt or attacked are pretty high and she values her life, also she’s perfectly happy in camp so it just seems like an unnecessary risk. But my problem with ppl making the disabled cats in warriors less disabled is that they’re removing representation for disabled readers with similar limitations, it’s more about representation than it is realism. I also agree that there’s a difference between ableist characters and ableist writing, I think it would’ve been cool to see a disabled cat having to educate ableist cats, but that doesn’t rlly happen in warriors, when Sandstorm said that Briarlight’s life wasn’t worth living nobody called her out on it, and the narrative pretty much proved her point by having Briarlight keep her sickness a secret, resulting in her death while not holding those who made her feel like she *should* keep it a secret accountable.

    • @lykhra2178

@@misskittyfantastico3473 Yeahhh I was agreeing with your points but after reading what I said, I’m also confused hehe. I should’ve explain it wayyyy more better so I’m sorry for that.
So like for realism part I definitely agree with you 100% like- I was trying to say even if there’s cat religions and unrealistic cat biology. In fiction, realism is usually defined by the story being relatable to real life people. How the characters would act and talk like if they had a human brain.
So you can have a realistic story and doesn’t have to follow everything EXACTLY in real life to be a “good story” or “good writing”, because it’s usually the characters feeling human-like and relatable to humans and that makes it realistic already. So representation is realism in my eyes, because good representation makes the characters feel so real!
Yeah, The characters have real life cat behaviours like grooming, smelling, attack using claws, cat body language, etc. But the characters are also pretty human-like portrayed. From what I read, Warrior cats, or the examples I’ve listed in previous comment, would value representation over biology for the story. Mae from Night in the woods is a cat, she flickers her ears, jumps high and balances on things, but the writers are more focused on representing her depression and dissociations like how humans experience them over making her 100% like a real life cat.
I was definitely agreeing with you about Briarlight not wanting to go out of camp! And the reason I brought op the “realism” thing is that:
For example when you said, “I don’t think Briarlight would go out into open territory because the chances of her getting hurt or attacked are pretty high.”
I’ve seen people who would argue,
“But Warrior cats is a FICTIONAL series so they could just write it so she never gets attack. Maybe it would be out of character of Briarlight to want to go out considering that she’s happy in the camp and values her life, and unrealistic for her to never get attacked or hurt at all BUT Warrior cats is always out of character and never realistic (cuz they have cat religions and herbs and cats with too complexed brains)! so Briarlight going out shouldn’t be a problem! It’s just bad and ableist writing 🙄”
And for the ableist character/writing thing. Yeah I definitely think that’s bad I don’t disagree with that and never had XD
I brought up those points because I think I’ve seen people complaining about how ableist Erin Hunter is for having ableist characters but maybe I misread or misinterpreted their comments. I assumed that was one of the reasons people say there’s ableism in Warriors. I think what you mentioned was definitely a case of ableist writing :/ dammit erins!
      I hope I cleared things up! ^^

And Briarlight could probably become a warrior, too! She might have to stick to building dens and stuff because she might not be able to hunt very well, but there are hunting techniques with two cats that let one party sit still anyway, like when one cat chases prey toward the other.

The worst part is they can be selective about this too. Two cats I can think of are Brightheart and Deadfoot. Brightheart is half blind and Deadfoot has a bad leg but they were both warriors. But no, if its both sides then you can't be a warrior and that doesn't even stick half the time because Cinderpelt became a medicine cat too
    Examples:
    Snowkit before he died
    Longtail
    Jayfeather
    Briarlight
Even cats like Alderheart who seems to have anxiety were forced into a med cat role. And it's not like it's not possible to be a warrior because they're wild cats because it's fantasy. They have a religion and anything.
Plus Snowkit could have easily become a warrior because there is a deaf warrior in Skyclan so the ablism is mostly exclusive to Thunderclan because if I remember right Deadfoot was deputy. Its just ridiculous how Thunderclan treats any cat that isn't ablebodied with the only acception being Brightheart. (And Jayfeather could have made a good warrior because he could rely on scent and sound like how a deaf warrior would rely on scent and sight)
Update: The skyclan cat is Fallowfern and she wasn't born deaf like Snowkit which was what I thought since the one scene I remembered her was when she crossed the Shadow clan border in vision of shadows but she's an elder in those books and wasn't deaf before that so scratch that point. I can understand severely disabled cats becoming medicine cats or retiring because they can't fight or hunt, but do the writers have to be so ableist about it?

"Paralysed cats can get around just fine." Shows a cat with working back legs living in a secure home with no rough terrain or predators. "Surely this applies to Briarlight too; because all disabilities are the same. I mean, she and Berrynose are in practically identical situations."
Seriously people; stop getting your information from UA-cam videos and go outside once in a while.

The cat in the video was paralysed from the waist down,m (ua-cam.com/video/x5Y8a-wkVJA/v-deo.html)
I wasn’t making a comment about Briarlight and Berrynose equivalent disabilities: i was making a comment about how I don’t like Berrynose and calling him “useless” because of that.
Maybe do your research and stop assuming what people mean in UA-cam comment sections; go outside, take a walk.

@@LinkyMew Just repeating my comment is not a good comeback. That's two areas of comedy you need to improve in.

@@siobhannoble8545 ah yes, the classic "go outside to get life experience" ending remark followed by the smug "that's two things..." after stating that repeating your own smug ending comment ironically is objectively not funny, despite parody being... a form of comedy.
Also a legitimate tip, never say "seriously people" because it makes you sound like the biggest ass with a debilitating inferiority complex.

maybe you're the one that needs to go outside, touch some grass and take a walk if a joke video really bothers you 😐
