All four were phenomenally gifted & served to activate each others' best qualities in what was a kind of musical "perfect storm", but I don't know if this band could have offered anything approaching the Beatles' magic without Paul so central to the mix. To those saying it must be George Martin playing the honky tonk piano, please note this from the fantastic web site beatlesebooks: “Paul also felt the song needed more piano work, not being entirely happy with the effect of his piano being run through a Leslie speaker in the second half of the original rhythm track. Instead, starting from the "Out Of College" segment of the song, he recorded what was documented as "jangle piano," which Paul played on piano at half-speed to give a "honky-tonk" effect when played at the correct speed.”
    If Paul could play Lady Madonna, he’s more than capable of playing this section at half speed.

They added so many interesting, beautiful, amazing and complex details that you don't even here normally, but they are so essential to the song. Everytime I listen to these songs I here something I didn't hear before. Shows the actual complexity and genius of Beatles tunes. Much, much, much and much more than pop songs.

    At 3:38 you can hear how Paul overdubbed the walking bass line over the honky-tonk bluesy section (with some drumstick percussion for added ricky-tick effect), then stopped and left the original bass track on the tape after 4:10

    • @aquamarine99911
      @aquamarine99911 3 роки тому +3

      Good catch. It's a tricky bit. Of course, the entire bass track had to be overdubbed because Paul was on keyboard.. But then why is there a change in bass tone after 4:20 (not really noticeable in the full track)? He must have done it on different days, with different levels. BTW, his keyboard part for that section is clearly overdubbed as well. It sounds sped up (like the solo in "In My Life") . Don't think Paul can play that fast.

    • @perhapsxarb7226

      @@aquamarine99911 Yes the piano sounds sped up. To me it sounds like the over-overdubbed bass part between 3:38 to 4:10 is a Fender Jazz, since the tone sounds very similar to the bass in WMGGW and Yer Blues. The previously overdubbed bass would be his usual Rickenbacker.
      Also it struck me as odd that the piano cuts out at "one sweet dream", but I listened to the 2009 mix and it is either cut out or very quiet at that point. On the 2019 mix it is very clearly audible. Interesting mixing choices.

    George's guitar playing took a giant leap forward heading into 1969. After his visit with members of The Band in late 68' he found new inspiration with his guitar playing. Before then he admitted to only picking up the instrument to lay down album tracks otherwise he was solely focused on mastering the sitar. As you can see he's in the early stages of shredding, and his string bends and vibrato give a more sophisticated nuance to his playing that you didn't hear a couple of years earlier. In addition to the slick 8 track production on new solid state consoles, it's considered the Beatles "modern" sounding album, with the heightened level of musicianship from all members.

    • @marcusphelan57
      @marcusphelan57 Рік тому

      @@Civilizashum It's George playing the lead on his Les Paul or Casino. The Tele may have been used for doubling up the "climbing" licks - it sounds like it to me, and George would have done the overdub on his own part. No Leslie on any guitar, it's being used by the piano in the "Oh that magic feeling" part. John begins playing his guitar at "any jobber", playing clean up/down strokes while George continues the funky bassy rhythm that begins at "Out of college..." We know Paul doesn't play guitar on this because the outakes show the Beatles are all playing together on the base track, so it's all being played live, apart from the overdubbed piano, chimes and vocals...and the doubled guitar bits.

    I'm so glad McCartney got George Martin to produce one more album after "Let it Be", which to me, is not on par with their other albums because it was produced by Phil Spector, who, I don't think really "got" The Beatles like Martin did. This spectacular song, with all its incredible changes, stellar guitar work, heavenly vocals and evocative lyrics, starts the "medley" of Abbey Road, which altogether, might be the greatest thing The Beatles ever did. Somehow, it's as if collectively, they knew this would be the last thing they would record together and they really worked to put together something very special for their fans to appreciate and for their legacy to endure forever. In just 8 years they created a body of work that is the finest, most important popular music of the "rock" era. Abbey Road would be their crowning achievement and this song is the most fabulous jewel in the crown.

  • @gorgolyt
    @gorgolyt 11 місяців тому +1

    So much of what made the Beatles incredible was just their sheer instrumentalism. I love the guitar parts here. Almost any other band would phone this in as a standard rhythm section, but what they bring is so layered and complex, and shows an incredible musical intuition for what will best elevate the song. And they worked so well as a unit. There were no egos. The guitars often aren't at the front of the mix here, and yet always they bring everything they can to work together with the rest of the song.

      I agree, but at times, such as this song, I'm constantly arguing with myself about which part GH is playing and which part JL is playing.
      For instance to my ear. John is playing the slightly distorted blues lead licks, and Georgie is playing the ultra clean, ringing, glistening arpeggios or individually picked chord tones. Yet, I'm not certain at all. For years I believed John played the rhythm guitar on "Come Together" & that George played the beautiful, clean tone (with natural distortion) lead guitar in "Come Together." I've listened to two different guitar and Beatle experts each claim that George played both guitars, the rhythm during the group basic track recording, guitar,bass,drums,John guide vocal. The other expert, textpert, insisted that John played both guitars.
      I believe "The Beatles Sessions" book, relates that George played both guitars.
      While I lean towards feeling-hearing the playing as George's on CT, listening to the examples of lead guitar I've found of John's gave me a much greater respect and understanding of his lead playing. I love istening to the studio and live versions of "Long Tall Sally" where John takes the first solo, and George takes the 2nd solo. Great insight to their differing approaches. John always exhibited an aggressive posture in his rock solos, from "Don't Bother Me" in 63' to his 3 x 2bar licks in the only Beatles guitar firefight in "the End", 69'. When he played aggressively, and with his tone, I think of him as one of the first or earliest "grunge" guitarist. His 1st fully musical solo album, "Plastic Ono Band" with Ringo and Klaus, having several examples of what I mean. ("I found Out" & "Well Well Well". Also "Cold Turkey" with Clapper prior to the album.)
