Florence...
Is John 'Pops' Grandaughter...
When she was small, Florence didnt like to go to bed UNLESS her bedroom light was left on.. sometimes all through the night!
...until Mr. Sloop and The Dolphins was read to her!
This was the first seed of the Mr. Sloop stories and adventures..
1. MR. SLOOP AND THE DOLPHINS
In a small sleepy town by the sea a tiny blue house sits happily on the edge of a rocky outcrop overlooking a beautiful sandy bay.
Looking through its small red window you can see Mr. Sloop relaxing in his soft and very purple comfy chair, waiting patiently for night-time.
Mr. Sloop is a duck.
A special duck.
Actually, everyone in the village would say he is THE most important duck ever.
Mr. Sloop is taller than other ducks because his head is stretched up and sits on top of a long bendy neck, just like a swan.
He carries a candle and a hot water bottle, is always ready for bed and because of his adventures, is mostly always tired.
He organises the things in his house by colour, has forgotten how to fly, and his favourite thing to do is sleep.
Mr. Sloop looked up just as the tiny door on his clock banged open, a small brown bird poked its head out and started shouting... ‘Cuckoo! Cuckoo!’
... and continued to shout ‘Cuckoo’ six more times before shooting backwards into his nest.
“Aahhh! Bedtime!” said Mr. Sloop.
His most favourite part of the day had arrived.
Mr. Sloop moved toward the window to pull the curtain shut.
He looked through the window and was quite startled.
“Wait a minute!” said Mr. Sloop, “where’s the dark?”
Mr. Sloop looked back to his clock. Yes, it was now eight o’clock!
“Well, this is a bit odd” he thought, “why has Mr. Sun forgotten to go to sleep, and where are the moon and the stars? It’s supposed to be night-time already.”
“Oh ketchup!” Mr. Sloop said out loud. (Mr. Sloop says ‘ketchup!’ whenever he gets upset, which is quite a lot).
Mr. Sloop decided to go out and investigate for himself, so opening his front door, he stretched his neck, until his head was completely outside.
Yes, Mr. Sun was definitely still shining, and Mr. Sloop definitely didn’t like it!
What he did like however was night-time. Mr. Sloop’s warm bed is a place he feels most safe. Nothing was going to stop him sleeping, not even Mr. Sun!
Mr. Sloop needed a little help with this, and he could see that his friends, the dolphins, were still playing in the sea, so he walked down the path to meet them.
The dolphins swam over to Mr. Sloop when they saw him waving.
The dolphin’s names are Ben, Sylvester, Bronte and Inka. Mr. Sloop knew them all by their proper dolphin names.
He explained his problem of Mr. Sun still shining and, after having a little chat and promising to bake them some of his special bread-pudding, a smiling Mr. Sloop said, “thank you” and skipped back to his little house.
The dolphins leapt at the chance to help Mr. Sloop and started to jump and twist out of the sea with excitement. They had a great time sloshing about, squirting water at each other and diving into the waves.
Now, all that splashing and jumping in the sea had startled Mr. Sun and he slowly turned to look at what was causing all the fuss.
Mr. Sloop’s plan was working... The dolphins started to swim out of the bay as far as the horizon, where the sky touches the sea.
Mr. Sun was so fascinated by the dolphins, he followed them out of the bay and then right to the end of the sea, taking the last of the bright daytime with him.
As Mr. Sun disappeared, he left behind Mr. Moon, who immediately started the night-time over the bay.
Mr. Sloop’s plan had completely worked and he went back inside his tiny blue house, lit his candle and smiled. He climbed the stairs and got into his comfy bed, hugging his hot water bottle.
That night Mr. Sun thoroughly enjoyed the watching the dolphins, the dolphins thoroughly enjoyed their playtime, and Mr. Sloop thoroughly enjoyed his sleep.
Night-night Mr. Sloop.
If you listen very carefully, you might even hear him snoring...
