- Time marches on, even for royalty. As the hit Netflix series "The Crown" returns for its third season, the young and glamorous Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, played to critical acclaim by Claire Foy and Matt Smith, are out; the more mature Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies are in. Mark Phillips spent time on the set with Colman and Helena Bonham Carter (who co-stars as Princess Margaret), and with series creator and writer Peter Morgan, to discuss the show about a family in extraordinary circumstances.

British actors have been blessing us with their brilliant performance in series after series of these great period dramas.
They seem more disciplined to their craft than American actors.
To me, they have better fundamentals when it comes ensemble acting. They have better intuitiveness amongst each other. Americans do well on that aspect when it comes to stage acting but to transition to TV or movies, it’s not there like the Brits.
With Americans, you have so many cultures and religions, an actor has to be disciplined of not being carried or burdened away. So, I have to disagree with that assessment.
I think what it comes down to is Brits have better appreciation for their history and literature from the lead actor to the extra and the energy is there.

I miss the actor who portrayed Mountbatten. He was good as is the actor who portrayed Tommy.
It's popular in the states because it has good writing and good acting. I had no interest in watching but after being talked into it, I became hooked.
Same! It is so good and well done, kind of like Downton. I bet many fans in the US were Downton fans first! Totally different shows but I think they have a similar feel. Also I think it is interesting to see the history of British politics. Love the history.
I suspect its the same 'draw' that The West Wing had as the writing was superb and the acting sublime. And it was also 'sort of' historical and followed a given path.
What's the big deal with changing actors? This plan was announced when the program first aired.

Olivia looks divinely as Queen Elizabeth
I'm not even into the British royal family (or any royalty for that matter), but how well this show is made, made me utterly curious. The acting so far was beyond amazing; with this new cast, it will only get better, I am very sure.
LOVE Olivia Coleman! She can play any role... from the condescending godmother in Fleabag(my personal favorite) to the graceful Queen of England. She definitely deserved to win that Oscar

Røbbin Mølk her performance in Peep Show is great to. It’s amazing seeing her transition over the course of a decade from cool, girl-next-door co-worker that’s also a love interest, to crazy alcoholic ex-wife by the end of the series.

I love that Peter Morgan is quite open that he really isn’t that interested in the Royal Family - he just happens to be good at writing about them so he sticks with what he knows.

You could put Olivia Coleman on a screen sitting there and not saying a word and it would be worth watching her just sit there, I am more excited now than ever for the new season.
Unpopular (but true) opinion: Olivia looks nothing at all like Her Majesty. I know she will blow the role out of the ball park but still, I’m just not being able to picture her as the Queen.
zattatack I get what you're saying and I thought that too when I was watching The Crown in the beginning but remember that even Claire Foy didn't even look like Queen Elizabeth II either but she managed to portray the character very well. You can tell that the casting director wasn't casting the actors for how close they looked like to the real-life character but more so casted them for their ability to capture the essence and mannerisms very close of those real-life characters. Like John Lithgow playing Churchill, he doesn't even look like Churchill but he captured Churchill's essence through his portrayal of him. Same for Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Alex Jennings, Pip Torrens - they don't look like the characters they play but they captured their aura very well
The only thing Claire and the Queen have in common is the color of the eyes. That's the beauty of it, Colman does not share even the color of the eyes but shes that's good of an actor that you forget it.

I trust Peter Morgan entirely, he did a beautiful job with the last two seasons that I think his decision was the best. PLUS Olvia & Tobias are world class actors 👏🏼 can’t wait to watch!!!!

I saw pictures of Emma Corrin as Princess Diana. The costume department and the hair and make up team did an excellent job! She looks like the princess herself.

When I heard they were changing the cast for season 3 I was like "no! Why change everything? Clair Foy was doing a great job!" Then I heard Olivia Coleman would take the lead role and I was like "Oh. Okay! Sometimes change is good!" lol

A big Disappointment!!!!! The change of actors for Queen Elizabeth II is a bust. Olivia Coleman doesn't look anywhere like the Queen. And certainly not in 1964, the Queen didn't look like that. Clair Foy was spot on as Queen Elizabeth II. She played the Queen so very well both in looks and character. What was wrong with the same actors, and aging them with makeup as so many movies series do? I don't believe the excuses they are giving, saying after just a short period of watching the new season we will fall right into the watching the new characters and feel right at home. Not likely. I have seen the first show of season 3, just finished watching it, and I'm not a fan. I loved seasons 1 and 2, told everybody that would listen about how good it was. Now I will say, " this is a must NOT watch". The Queen was much more pretty in 1964, than what they are showing. Olivia Coleman plays the Queen as a bucked tooth lady, not flattering to either of them. Well, if it had been 1994 Coleman would be ok, maybe. I have seen and watched pictures and videos of the real Queen and she has gotten more beautiful with age, age has been kind to her. Olivia Coleman is a very good actress, I agree. But as Queen Elizabeth II in 1964, maybe , just maybe 1994 and certainly not in 2019. Please produchers, what were you thinking in letting Clair Foy go??? I'm just so disappointed in the changes. So disappointed.

I enjoyed watching The Crown, Season 1 & 2 so much. And am looking forward to Season 3. A slight observation on Season 3, the actors playing Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret and Prince Charles all have brown eyes when actually, the individuals they are portraying all have blue eyes. Why didn't the producers have the actors wear blue contacts? Season 1 & 2 were so authentic. Just saying.......
From what has been said in interviews that when they tried contacts it hid the actors eyes too much and hindered the portrayals and they felt that people would forgive the whole eye thing. Remember Claire Foy looks NOTHING like QEII, it was her transformation into the character that people fell in love with (at least that was the case for me).
@@SizzlingThyme I agree. Part of what makes me interested in watching Season 3 is Josh's (the actor who plays Prince Charles) performance. It isn't his physical resemblance but his portrayal of the prince himself that I want to see. From the trailer alone his mannerisms and his facial expressions are what remind me of the prince. The lack of eye contacts is a good thing as it lets the audience focus on the performance of the actors.

I totally agree. I think they gave the Queen's role to Olivia because of her Oscar win. The reversal of actresses would have been much better. I don't like the fact that they changed the actors and the fact that The Queen now has brown eyes instead of blue. 🤷♀️
Exactly my thought! But they are supose to be sisters so I guess it works out becauze some sisters kind of look like they were their other sister with age.
Olivia looks more like the real queen, and she is a superb actress.

Television shows about the British Monarchy are fascinating to us Americans in the same way going to a Zoo is fascinating.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of both Olivia Coleman and Helena Bonham-Carter, but neither Queen Elizabeth nor Princess Margaret had brown eyes! Am I the only one bothered by these glaring inconsistencies in casting? Plus, because they are so recognizable, for me, it gets in the way of the characters. Claire Foy worked well partly because she's not well known, in the US anyway. I'm not even sure I'll watch season 3; I'm so annoyed with the casting - again excellent and talented actors, but those two highly recognizable royal figures did not have brown eyes!

Further to my post below. Have been watching season two to get back up to speed on what was going on then. Season 2, episode six, Uncle David's dark past. How brilliantly acted. Absolutely convincing portrayal of those events. Olivia and Tobias will have to excel to follow in the footsteps of Claire and Matt. Bring on season 3 👍

The only thing I'd criticize is, why Ms Coleman and Ms Bonham-Carter are not wearing blue contacts? When they are "children" the girls have blue eyes. Is incongruous.

I really love the crown I really enjoyed the first two seasons I think it's one of the best things Netflix has ever put on quality class all the way around just finished the first two episodes of season 3 I'm quite disappointed I like all of the actors that are in it but something feels really off I don't know if it's the script I don't know if it's the set I don't know what it is but it's dreary boring I'm quite upset about the whole thing of course I'll keep watching but I hope it gets better so far it's not even half as good as the first two seasons very sad

Olivia's "Queen's Voice", is not as good as her predecessor's, at least from the snippit I heard here. Looking forward to the third serious tremendously 👍

The directors reason for bringing in new actors for the third series was one can only "age" actors in a role for a certain period before they become unrealistic in that role. Why? With todays technology, make-up etc etc, aging Claire and Matt shouldn't have been a problem. Or am I missing something here? I think it's very risky replacing two very popular and convincing actors with others! Colman has neither The Queens voice nor walk. We'll see on Sunday when Season 3 starts 👍
@@robertw.1499 Agreed. I was kind of disappointed in the clips I've seen of Olivia, but maybe it will just take an episode to adjust. Colman has added pressure, because we've also seen Helen Mirren portray the Queen in this era (perfectly.) Foy and Mirren gave Colman some pretty big shoes to fill. That said, I'm sure I'll watch the whole series, because the production is so well done, and clearly the director knows what he's doing. PS: I miss the "Queen Mary" character played by Eileen Atkins.

I liked the first queen a lot better. This one has 3 facial expressions and that’s about it. I know it’s probably a hard role to play but I thought the younger one had much more depth.

I just recently watched season 1&2 , mostly binged then went right into season 3! So I have trouble with the continuity but after 2 episodes I can see it is quality BUT I really loved Claire Foy, Matt Smith & Vanessa Kirby in the roles so it is tough....
Sat up all night and watched the entire 10 episodes.... Love the new Prince Phillip. Loved Charles, Ann, and Alice characters, they really looked like them. I could not accept the new Princess Margaret because she looks nothing like her, and she looked pregnant...While they all did a wonderful job some of it seemed a bit slow going. And it left me with negative opinions about some of the Monarchy that I thought highly of, and gave me a positive opinions of the ones I had criticized in the past.? All in all, I enjoyed it.

I was worried about it not seeming seamless after I found out they were changing actors after season 2. It's a seamless transformation.

The new princess Margaret is amazing. She can be annoyingly feisty , funny in her portrayal of her affair with Donny, but she also got my sympathy for her situation.

It is kind of odd they chosed three brown eyes actors to play three blue eyes characters . Nothing so bad but being UK a place with so many clear eyes actors it is a rare coincidence. The actress who played the young queen was quite similar to Elizabeth II , even she was not tall like the real queen..
Please bring back the origional cast..No disrespect to the new cast but the origional cast who played the roll of the

Problem is the transition has happened too quickly.
Series 2 finished in the early 60s considering kennedy was in it and now series 3 is starting in the late 60s. Quite a short time jump tbh

I am shocked that the Real Her Majesty The Queen wasn't quite interested in Season 3. This is the story about her and she sadly doesn't approve of the 3rd Season.
