Thanks for diving so deep into the game before putting something out about it. There are a lot of folks doing one or 2 hours and then giving their take on it as if a few hours is enough time to gauge any survival game. Those of us that play this genre know that a few dozen hours is often just enough to scratch the surface. My biggest take away is how impressed I am at how much content and how many of the systems in this game actually work considering it just released into early access. There have been so many survival crafting games that would consider the current state of this game a finished product, not that I do, just pointing out that in this genre, this game really is punching well above it's weight.
When the Escapist diaspora happened, my first thought was, "wait, did the new guy come too? What's his name? Frost?" Seeing how solid recent Cold Takes (and Wind Breakers) have been thanks to him, I am gratified that my intuition was correct. As for this video, yeah, great format. A 15 minute narrative journey that takes the best elements of a review and a livestream is a good idea.
Yeah, this definitely works. I still prefer the Cold Takes on more conceptual things but Frost can definitely blend his style into a very solid review.
I love Frost's style of "review" (it feels like more than just a review). It reminds me of a miniature version of Tehsnakerer's "Playing" series of longform video essays.
Man this was some high quality shit. Thank you for not being like every other UA-camr on the damn platform and calling it "Pokemon with guns" and pointing out all the exploits and quirks it has.
The actual biggest reason not to buy this game currently is if you dislike open-world games or survival crafters. I watched three minutes of this game and knew it would never be for me.
Yeah I mean the inverse being true as well, that if you do like this type of game then you'll probably like this game. I normally don't like these types of games but this and Once Human have both really spoke to me this year
Never liked a single survival game except Subnautica. Palworld works hard on making sure you can automate what you don't want to do. Wanna start immediately without crafting base? Sure, up until lvl ~15 you can just go around and the map provides "pokebals" as treasure chests and just laying on the ground. Then come back and make a selfsustanable base (around ~40 min of basebuilding work) and leave again until lvl 25. At that point, you will probably need to invest some time in second base and iron production for armor, but afterwards you are again free to go until lvl 35. At that point it's hard to catch things with just map drops, so might need to put few hours in better pokeball production. But it's like 15h in game before that is needed.
I decided to board the hype train and have a go at Palworld. I played it for about 4 hours over the weekend, maybe a little longer. I can see why people like it, I haven't gotten very far in it yet. Overall still undecided, but I don't hate it. I didn't turn it off after only 5 minutes, so it must have something fun going on.
the point where you get your first non-land based mount is the key for me, really opens up the exploration and there is valuable stuff to find (epic gear blueprints, large eggs to incubate that often get you rare Pals)
The way everything interlocks is pretty great, you can do pretty much anything and still make progress. Exploration gives upgrade effigies and eggs, base building gives better gear, pal collection lets you run a more effective base and is important for your combat strength, and having good mounts is vital for exploration (e.g. a water type for crossing the ocean without drowning). As a Craftopia fan I like the streamlining, every item has an use now and I don't spend 80% of the session just processing resources.
Frost should do the news. It's all horrific terrible stuff I can't deal with without becoming depressed but if he was the one reading it to me I think it would go down a lot smoother
i think cold takes frost is my favorite aspect of this or the previous channel. its the imaculate style and smoldering voice over besides the takes... which are solid.

Other than being able to ride on the creatures, what exactly is specifically ARK:Survival? Guns are in several survival games, and so is basebuilding, so aside from being able to ride creatures I really don't see it. With no real 'taming' mechanic the creatures don't really behave the same way either.
@@krishanson1864 I'd be reluctant to call the resource collection 'ARK Inspired' and while fixed respawn points might be a good point theres the fact that its just a requirement for a handmade world. Theres a decent number of games that have a similar inventory layout but the tech is a good point that I forgot about, even if personally I don't think the tech tree mechanic is actually groundbreaking in any way and was mainly designed to gate things off while games like ark developed.
I'm a bit overspent in the games market, but I'll probably see if this game gets polished out some more and get it when there's a bit more to it. fun to see it actually make it out into the world though. thanks for a well thought out review
Im fairly certain that with the meticulous detail of the world, that the past 3 years of development have been squarely focused on making the world itself. The map shows a lot of care and effort and I can see the logic behind having an engaging world up front and filling in the minutiae later on down the line
"It's more like dating someone who looks an awful lot like your ex girlfriend... Or her dad." That got me! Great closing line. Frost, your clever writing is one of the best things about the channel!
It's a very early early access game, and it runs better than ANY OTHER open world survival game in EA right now. So it has a leg up on those already Edit: It also has a better Character Creator than the last 3 Pokemon game so... LOL
The fact that they made an open world and didn't make it a pain in the arse to get aroundh that world is one of its best features. Yes, I know that BotW did the "stamina used to climb objects so you don't have to path around them" thing first (or at least before Palworld did) but it's so useful here and helps the exploration too.
I'm really nervous about playing Palworld, mostly because I had to buy 3 real full price games to get 1 I liked. I've been burned so much by games lately I have purchase Paralysis now. Baldur's Gate 3 was my one game purchase last year I didn't regret.
have you played and enjoyed any other crafting-survival type games? if so, then you'll probably enjoy this one if you don't expect anything innovating from it otherwise... check if others under similair tags are on sale for less
Honestly this was a really helpful review. It's nice seeing the game play loop by someone who knows the loop but doesn't feel the need to spoil everything along the way.
The only reason I'm not quite ready to jump into Palworld is that this is the publishers/developers 3rd game in early access currently. Now I'm not a conspiracy mind chap who thinks everything is a scam, but maybe Pocketpair should finish their other open world sandbox creative game before starting a new one. The people that paid money for Craftopia would probably feel better about their purchase if the dev wasn't chasing the next big thing.
They made a second team to work on Craftopia while their primary focus is on Palworld. It seems to me that Craftopia was a stepping stone that helped made Palworld come to fruition
This is 100% the biggest issue with the game, and it's pretty frustrating to not hear anyone talk about it. The only thing that sets my mind at ease a little bit is that a community manager mentioned that a different team worked on Palworld, and right before Palworld's release, Craftopia received a roadmap. If Palworld's success can make both games make it to the finish line, then we're all good. Will it? I don't know, but it warrants serious criticism that nobody seems to give.
Craftopia just got a patch 5 days ago. That said, I already feel like I got my moneys worth of gameplay from craftopia, and palworld does everything craftopia did just better. It feels more like a sequel really. I already feel like I've almost got my moneys worth for palworld. I've got 50hrs of fun out of a $23(on sale) game. 50c and hour for fun with friends on a server exploring and goofing off is pretty good.
Holy shit balls, what is this channel. I don’t think I’ve fallen in love so fast. If this dude reviews all his games with a smouldering Dick Tracey parlance, imma be elbow deep.
Don’t want to finish the video right now as I don’t want to spoil what I haven’t seen of the game, but this not what I was expecting in terms of a review in the best way. I will definitely be back for more.
It's nice to get a thorough review of this game separate from the more sensationalist stories surrounding it, and Frost is exceptionally on point as always.
Frost after 60 hours: "Alright, finished the game." Me after 60 hours, still running around the entry islands with adhd, chasing after every pal I see with pal spheres in one hand and a baseball bat in another to completely fill out the Paldeck: "Huh wha?"
This is my first time hearing one of your reviews. I mostly survived because I remember Yahtzee from way back. I had no idea the “Old Cage” still had someone as cool as you there. Your hardboiled style is a delight. If you’ll excuse me I’m going to go listen to a few more or your videos.
Noire-esque voice over review with straight-man delivered jokes is... such a specific genre scratching at an itch I never knew I had until you found it. So. Hell yeah.
Can't say much on how it feels, $30 is a little steep for me to gamble my hard drive and schedule space on, but it certainly looks more Frankenstein's Monster than Ex-Girlfriend's Dad to me. At least, it leans towards that end. Maybe a compromise, like Leatherface wearing my ex-girlfriend as a mask.
@@tincano-beans2114 I have no expectation that the game will ever be completed or go on a significant sale, but if either of those actually come to fruition, I'll give it a shot (Or if someone gifts it to me, but that seems even less believable. It's not on my wishlist for a reason.)

Best of the review of the game I've seen yet. Nice jokes and wordplay, and wonderful noir styled voice over and delivery. On point as well.
"I'll just pack it in my inventory until I can craft a Best Buy where I can buy a charger." 😂 Pure comedy gold!
Cold take is a wonderful version of reviews, keep up the good work.
The writing in this video is exelent. The use of the language is superb, and the reading so apt.
I was not expecting a Ke$ha quote from Frost, but I'm happily surprised 😂
I definitely haven't watch enough cold take but gotta say the writing was absolutely on point and hilarious this go round. Cheers!
Don't ever change, Frost. This review was funny and informative and delivered in a ridiculously smooth manner.
The last Wii U got me. I had to pause the video until I was done laughing at that one 3:07
Oh man I didn't notice that joke. That's hilarious
This was an entertaining review. I'm already like 100 hours deep so I didn't need convincing but I appreciate the word play and phrasing.
The writing on this is top notch and I dig the noir detective vibe. Good stuff. 🐺
I don't like either of those but for some reason Palworld works for me.
But it's like 15h in game before that is needed.
or just liking real games and not cheap ripoffs maybe
@@ggadams639 Stay malding pokemon sucks.
Huh. Palworld sounds a *lot* better than I was expecting from this. Also, great episode! Definitely going to look at other Cold Takes after this.
I'm adding "Not Logined" to my vernacular, thanks!!!
This video is a work of art. I wasn't expecting this.
You might think that Pingullet is a legally distinct Piplup but actually, it's a legally distinct Prinny.
i think cold takes frost is my favorite aspect of this or the previous channel. its the imaculate style and smoldering voice over besides the takes... which are solid.
I just hope future updates include more building tilesets and possibly alternate models for different weapons.
Oh, sweet summer child, “future updates”
Oh, sweet summer child, “future updates”
@@xXRickTrolledXxeven there part games did. But witth not much people playing they didn't stick with it looking for a hit and they just did
@@xXRickTrolledXxbruh, they’re actively updating it, unless they flat out stop communicating and posting stuff then it’s safe to say they’re working hard on updating. You can’t build a bridge in a day after all.

"this game sold 8 million copies in under a week and is absurdly profitable "
"oh well on to the next thing"
Like even if you want to assume the worst of this company, them abandoning it still makes no sense from a pure greed standpoint.
Thanks Frost, you're thoughts moved my interest needle from "Why is this so popular? I don't like Ark or Pokemon." to "Huh... sounds mildly interesting" - well done.
I want this guy to retell a Tex Murphy game, or just tell a crime noir story while a single jazz trumpet plays in the background.
i love this video so much... and my first time hearing this guy's voice and the BEST narrator.
So, frost is the first content creator to aknowledge the heavy ark:survival influences that im aware of...
Other than being able to ride on the creatures, what exactly is specifically ARK:Survival?
Guns are in several survival games, and so is basebuilding, so aside from being able to ride creatures I really don't see it. With no real 'taming' mechanic the creatures don't really behave the same way either.
@@AstralDragn in the menu layout, visuals, the whole spending points on tech, the manner of resource collection and respawns, ect
I actually am editing a video for another creator's channel where they make that comparison, too. So it's actually kinda funny to see that here too
Great ad writing and good placement. Great review. What a great channel.
I'm a bit overspent in the games market, but I'll probably see if this game gets polished out some more and get it when there's a bit more to it. fun to see it actually make it out into the world though. thanks for a well thought out review
This was my first video I've seen of yours, absolutely funny and informative that k you I'm def watching more!
Im fairly certain that with the meticulous detail of the world, that the past 3 years of development have been squarely focused on making the world itself. The map shows a lot of care and effort and I can see the logic behind having an engaging world up front and filling in the minutiae later on down the line
That was actually a fair review. I did not expect that what a good video.
"It's more like dating someone who looks an awful lot like your ex girlfriend... Or her dad." That got me! Great closing line. Frost, your clever writing is one of the best things about the channel!
It's the way you say "balls" that earnt you a Subscription.
Fell off Palworld super quick but the narration of the video rules so much that I want to give it another shot.
3:00 the rhyme "I wake up in the morning feeling nothing like nothing like P Diddy,
Awakened by a chicken, a sheep, and a pink kitty" was there 😭
Dude sounds like hes narrating a Noir Film
You should be doing audiobooks or radio plays, what a voice.
It's a very early early access game, and it runs better than ANY OTHER open world survival game in EA right now. So it has a leg up on those already
Edit: It also has a better Character Creator than the last 3 Pokemon game so... LOL
I love how accurately you use 'legally distinct' XD
hold on the writing for this is actually amazing i love it so much lol
The fact that they made an open world and didn't make it a pain in the arse to get aroundh that world is one of its best features. Yes, I know that BotW did the "stamina used to climb objects so you don't have to path around them" thing first (or at least before Palworld did) but it's so useful here and helps the exploration too.
I'm really nervous about playing Palworld, mostly because I had to buy 3 real full price games to get 1 I liked. I've been burned so much by games lately I have purchase Paralysis now.
Baldur's Gate 3 was my one game purchase last year I didn't regret.
Good thing is it's not AAA price it's 30 bucks, well worth the purchase imo.
have you played and enjoyed any other crafting-survival type games? if so, then you'll probably enjoy this one if you don't expect anything innovating from it
otherwise... check if others under similair tags are on sale for less
I like your narrative style.
The Cold Take branding is doing some heavy fucking lifting here making me click on a video with "palworld" in the title
@@ryan_nstuff very glad to hear Craftopia is still being supported.
Holy shit balls, what is this channel. I don’t think I’ve fallen in love so fast. If this dude reviews all his games with a smouldering Dick Tracey parlance, imma be elbow deep.
Frost: "Not the chattiest of NPCs, but they give me wood."
Me: "Wait. What!?"
Don’t want to finish the video right now as I don’t want to spoil what I haven’t seen of the game, but this not what I was expecting in terms of a review in the best way. I will definitely be back for more.
4:00 Obligatory "I have made myself a huge disservice for not watching this series before SW, Frost speaks like a master" moment there
It's nice to get a thorough review of this game separate from the more sensationalist stories surrounding it, and Frost is exceptionally on point as always.
Frost, your command of language in these takes is 2nd to none! I loved Stuff of Legends in the Before Times and I'm loving Cold Take now!
"I spot a giant grass mammoth with a giant health bar. Never have my balls felt so inadequate."
I fucking lost it. GD I've missed y'all
Frost after 60 hours: "Alright, finished the game."
Me after 60 hours, still running around the entry islands with adhd, chasing after every pal I see with pal spheres in one hand and a baseball bat in another to completely fill out the Paldeck: "Huh wha?"
This is my first time hearing one of your reviews. I mostly survived because I remember Yahtzee from way back. I had no idea the “Old Cage” still had someone as cool as you there. Your hardboiled style is a delight. If you’ll excuse me I’m going to go listen to a few more or your videos.
People calling palworld an asset flip have forgot what asset flips are imo
Asset flips are less than the sum of their parts, Palworld is more
People just say words on the internet, the term "asset flip" was most non dev's exposure to the concept of "assets" in the first place
We have a video just for that! ua-cam.com/video/xGFhgiZat1c/v-deo.htmlsi=1ytRYo5g1VIri7je
This guy + the zero punctuation guy, this channel is going places.
Man sounds like the voice over character from a mafia movie. Who knew made men collected other monsters besides gangsters...
Love your gritty noir vibes, dude. Subbed.
Frost's delivery on those punchlines is always excellent.
Does he do every review with this noir style? If not, remake all reviews just like this please. I'll put them on a loop and let it guide me the rest of my life.
