watching morgan collect interests and niche knowledge is so inspiring to me. all i want in life to is to be someones weird extremely cool aunt (someone comment in like 5 years after my sister has started having kids lol i wanna see what progress ive made)
I'm the weird cool cousin to my cousin's kids. Honestly, we all consider me more the kids' aunt, but I'm the one that is the weird one... And the one that gives them cool things. The daughter got into diamond art and so I provide that to her.
I come from a place where "Zopf" is still our favorite Sunday/celebration bread. So this hairstyle evokes very homely feelings. Also the "Gefrens" is such a neat an simple way to cover the not so neat parts of the hairstyle.
I 100% agree! Turning fabric tubes is sooooo annoying!!! My biggest enemy, though, has always been set-in sleeves. It’s one of the reasons why I love medieval fashion so much. The sleeves are sooooooo much easier!!
Okay, so a trick I've found for turning tubes, is to safety pin a piece of yarn or ribbon to the "inside/right side" of the very end and tuck it right up against your fold so you never stitch over it. Then when you're done, you just pull the yarn/ribbon while you hold the open end. It's SOO much faster, even better than an afghan hook for turning tube laces. If it's not to be seen at the end you can even sew the ribbon in and then just cut it after you turn it. I learned it as a trick for threading elastic through my kid's waistbands when they were small. If it sew it already in there it's much simpler than trying to thread it through after the fact, I just needed a little extender to keep it from bunching before time. It made stuff animal arms and dolls clothes so much more "bear"able.
Lovely as always. I truly appreciate the secrets to fuller braids. Although my hair is long, it gathers into a disappointingly thin braid. And your hat turned out super cute as well 😍
Imagine the gefrens to be gold and silver thread as jewelry :D I love these videos trying out medieval en renaissance stuff. They were so smart with limited materials and options, so creative!
Love the detective work you did again with that headwear ❤ I totally agree that it looks as it has the same origin as chaperone being a rolled hood! And thus I was so happy you didn’t give up on it 😅 saw the potential from the start and it did end up looking amazing!
looks nice. kinda want my long hair back so i can try it. and KITTY! im thinking the ribbion is part of the end of them so its build-in.they do have long thin ends that seems ribbonlike. i do feel like the braids should go around the beck before going up over the head. ur ponytail version seems more likely to me.
Well poop, time to drop everything I’m making and make a bunch of colors of these now 😂 I would love it if you continued a series with this with different hairstyles, and Marge fun modern things we can do with them. I’ve got to figure out the best colors to go with my natural red hair 😊 I feel like these are a medieval equivalent of those chunky yarn falls that you see with cyberpunk hairstyles and things like that lol
. At first I thought the gefrens was a bizarre accessory, then realized it's actually a beautiful way to conceal that weirdness at the back that keeps me from feeling confident in braids! This was a fantastic experimental archeology episode; thanks Morgan!
I SWEAR it was just yesterday morning i was trying different braids and wishing I could have a Morgan Donner braid video with her current hair length. You are the best!
Another wonderful exploration!! Patron Saint of UA-cam, what a neat idea. I learned so much. So back fringe is a really odd but fun idea to hide the construction mess. And I think people have always cared about their hair is because hair is a pretty good indicator of health. Lots of shiny hair= strong and healthy person
I think the hood hat is fun, but Id love to see it with the band type that was in clara's painting. Its a fun way to include really detailed decorative headwear and I think the stiffness of the band would be a better counterpart to the softness of the braids and fringe.
Thank you! You look so inspired in this video! (Off topic: I visited St Claras tomb recently where her relics are, lying like Snow White in a glass "coffin". With a golden mask on her face.)
This was a great rabbit-hole. Thanks for doing all that research. It's an amazingly complicated hairstyle - padded braids, corona, fringe, flowers, hat - what a foo-fah-rah. You really captured the look of the art and statuary.
At first I wasn't sure why anyone would want a neck fringe, but once you had it on I realized that it would be an effective sunblock. Probably easier to clean than hair was at the time as well.
This is something I can do in an hour to make a hat and I need hats! My long hair doesn’t fit into modern hats and my head gets cold here in the great white North!
Interesting! This reminds me of the Janet Stephens video on the Vestal Virgin hairstyle, there's a similar piece of fabric that is used along the hairline.
Yes! I was trying to think of who it was who did all those amazing Roman styles. She also did some medieval styles as well. (My favorite comment for the ancient Greek styles was "step one, have tons of long curly hair".)
These look fantastic! I especially love the first part with the “ stuffed” braids. Unfortunately my hair too short because I was blessed with natural curls ( which I love). . Otherwise would love to wear my hair that way. Very flattering.
I wonder how these would work if you made them by felting the noodles. Then there is no sewing or turning, and you can keep adding bulk where it is needed until you are happy with the shape and size.
Thank you for the inkle loom demo; it made sense of something I'd only read about. I love your experimental archeology approach to historical fashion. If you make another gefrense (sp?) I wonder how using cordage to match your haircolor with contrasting fringe would look, and if the cotton coil hairdressers use for perms would work for the braid falsies
I have a tip to make the flipping out of those long tubes WAYYYY easier. Use a piece of yarn or string and run it along the length of your tube then fold over with it on the inside and sticking out both ends. Now sew one end and down the side then slip out from sewing machine. See the string on the side you did NOT sew closed? Pull it and the other end will follow INSIDE the tube and come out the end..... voila!!! You are welcome 😉
I like it. I do this with fake hairextensions (none shiny). In think In bought them from AliExpress but it could be Temu. The are 4 strains per side with a soft hairtie holding them together at the top. Because I do not want the hairty showing I use the 4th strength to wrap around the hair tie . The three others I braid in to my own hair. It doesnt just male my hair thicker. It gives it the right length so I can wrap it around my head. I love those "old" hairstyles.
10:06 is that a mattress stitch? I only know it from knitting! Love the braid stuffers, though - 100% going to make myself some squiddy bois for my own hair. Thank you for the inspiration!
We all like costume dramas here, right? There was a movie made called Brother Sun, Sister Moon (directed by Franco Zeffirelli - who also did the, in my opinion, best version of Romeo & Juliet 1968) that tells the story of St Francis & St Clare. There's a good trailer for it here on youtube & is streaming free in various places. I can't vouch for historical accuracy, but the costuming is yummy!
It looked to me like in the originals the ends of the filler braids had long stringy bits. Would adding some kind of skinny tail to the end help incorporate them into the rest of the braid? Also, I need to make a gefrens!! The back of my hair needs to be hidden! Lol ❤️
I think I would be tempted to actually attach all 6 together then separate off 3 to each side of my head so that it anchors securely at the nape of the neck 🤔
The rich ladies would've had money to get real hair, that makes me think that the coloured fabric peeking through was part of the fashion. I think the blue peeking through in the final look did give it some more visual interest just on its own without the fringe or the hat.
I miss original Lume. Honestly, once they changed their formula, it stopped working as well, then they were sold and changed again, getting rid of some of the most popular scents, and it became crap. The stuff in stores today is NOTHING like the original formula and you'll find a better version in Native Whole Body or if you don't mind the cream, Dove Whole Body is closer than what's packaged as Lume today but it does have a longer dry down time. I suggest getting sample sizes of things if you can before committing because they're all IB the $12/13+ range for a normal tube. If Lume, or I should say Harry's, ever pulls their head out and recognizes that the original award winning formula really was better than everything on the market, even today, and that the simple scents before the buyout were far more unique and clean than anything else, we might see a return to the quality product it used to be. But I doubt it. They wanted to compete with Native despite their original formula out pacing them, and instead they became an overpriced knockoff. Vanilla, Lime, Tangerine, Bay Rum, even OG unscented - were all more effective than anything today. Now they have a Coconut that they claim has Vanilla, but since going nass market it just smells like a bad knockoff of the Native. Harry's didn't believe the product could stand on its own and that they needed to reformulate despite having a loyal direct sales following. It was dumb and sad, and I wish they could recognize their mistake.
I thought that such medieval extensions weren't used since their hair was mostly tied up and somewhat covered. Also, the hairstyles weren't as extravagant as the following centuries. But this is a nice way to achieve fuller hair😊
The mediaeval period generally spans as great a time as 400s to 1500s depending on where in europe youre looking at. There is room for a ton of different fashions in over a thousand years + different expectations for different social groups in different countries.
I love these! I have a particular interest for traditional hairstyles and fashions from southern germany where i'm from, i'd love some good sources on that if anyone has any, no idea where to start 😅
I love when you do historical hair tutorials! Sad that your hair has grown so long since you chopped it years ago, but love when you have the length to do these how to videos. Thanks for all the knowledge!

I love that the whole ensemble look at the end is giving major Ebenezer Scrooge Muppets Christmas Carol energy
I could watch Donner historical craziness for days.

Once you pinned your bangs back it created a bizarre sense of nostalgia, like a return to Morgan 4 years ago before the Big Chop lol
I felt the same!!
HAS IT BEEN 4 YEARS?
Also, a patron saint of youtube? Yes. Lets make it happen!
It's kinda awesome just seeing the red honestly. Kinda like raving weaves. Match them up with the secret partied pants and I'd say you have a winner!

Truly Scrumptious as the lady on the music box in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' came to mind...the braided hairstyle.
The knot you are using is a half hitch. This is a fun video.

@@firstofficerrose1588I believe they are talking about the "unfinished" knot on the ribbon.
