As much as I like the show and truly admire and respect the adaptation, and how cool it looks... Listening to Sam and Matt play out that scenario at the table was absolutely the most epic moment I've listened to so far. It was so epic, moment after moment of the randomness Sam found on his sheet. What a fucking legend
i loved how they animated Scanbo, but they did make interesting alterations. Scanlan was inside the house when he drank the potion of fire breathing and that happened first. he defeated Vedmire by "Scanlan's hand" (they can't use the term "Bigby's hand" because Wotc haven't allowed them to use copyright material - yes, i know that's crazy) and lightning bolt, but Bigby's hand didn't force Vedmire off the roof and gently let Scanlan down, providing him with the coolest possible exit. it was awesome and different, but i'm not sure it was as good as the way Sam improvised it. the impact in TLOVM was also slightly diminished by the choice to intercut Scanbo with what the rest of VM were doing in Whitestone, although cinematically that makes perfect sense. part of the joy of Scanbo on stream was how the sequence built with a series of crazy choices and lucky rolls. however i did love how in TLOVM they provided more obvious motivation for Scanlan to attack the house single handed by the other members of VM saying "oh, he's useless, it's far too dangerous for him to provide the distraction alone"
Honestly, with the way the other members are treating Scanlan, they are are quickly ramping up to the point where Scanlan has enough and leaves for a bit.
the way the episode is done is also a good buildup for scanlan's arc in the cheoma conclave. he is treated as a joke and even see himself as one but wants to prove himself for both himself and the rest. he even telle vedmire "i know i'm a joke". in critical role sam originally didn't plan for scanlan to be a serious character untill kailee showed up, in the legend of vox machina they very nuch plan on making him a serious character from the start and build on that.

Probably my favorite moment is campaign one. It's what sold me on scanlan and after this he was my favorite, then he broke my heart, then he was my favorite again.
Thank you for the blending of these two events. I remembered watching this episode with my mouth hanging open. All I was thinking was, my next character is going to be a bard. Also, I remember watching there was a stegosaurus in there somewhere, but I had forgotten Matt did not have a triceratops mini so he went with the steg. Good times. Thanks for the memory. Bards are badd-ass, play one today!
Haha even though it played out differently in animation I can totally see why. The pacing and visuals would have been out of sequence and have less of a kick had it been animated exactly as played. Equally hilarious, and equally Scanlan 👏
I was wondering if Vedmire’s burn scar was a reference to GOTs The Hound. Seeing as vedmire is voiced by Rory McCann. Or it could just be a coincidence 🤷🏻♀️
In the show they made him less of a badass like yes he was making it up as he went and had some failures but he was so much cooler in the actual episode then Scanlan in the show was
This was likely a deliberate choice from Sam himself since he always played Scanlan as a "failing upward" kinda character. Since he was specifically a player in this instance, he was probably making the moment more badass than his character would've had. Essentially, *Sam* was the one being badass while *Scanlan* likely was going by the seat of his pants. It's an interesting translation between D&D session to scripted show that we've never really seen before.
It's kind of a reversal of the more common situation where a player is in over their head, not being able to think and act as clearly and decisively as their character would in some situations, because it is hard to play someone more intelligent, trained and perceptive than oneself without a script.
You don’t get to be compared to Rambo when your success was 95% fluke. The reality of the situation is scanlan in the campaign was rolling with his own skillset, with powerful spells he had used many times. At any moment he could dimension door to guaranteed safety, but he stayed the course until the mission was done, pulling out all the stops to do so, hence the naming of the scene. That may be “by the seat of the pants” to some degree - in Sam’s perception or anyone else’s but it’s a fundamentally different scenario than the raid in the show. Sure it was a zany sequence of events in the campaign, but I have problems with the scene’s setup being so cockamamie when it didn’t really need to be even with Scanlan’s lesser power level.
another thing to mention is that this is the early campaign 1, as in they had just come from years playing pathfinder and were figuring out 5e. Sam chose to play a bard because Liam told him it was "the worst class", which anyone who plays d&d can tell you is not remotely true for its version of the bard class. the power jump was a pretty surprise for them all
Love Liam’s comment, “You can’t get this on Network Television ladies and gentlemen”. Fast forward to 2023: ….rewatching this scene on the largest television streaming network Amazing.
I love how the fire breath potion is initiated through a gas reaction. Tying the ‘I fart on them as a triceratops’ line back into ‘the fire potion causes you gastric distress, resulting in a noxious emission before vomiting flames’ was a nice touch.
One of my favorite subtle things about the animated series version is Scanlan seeing the triceratops head in the Duke's trophy room before polymorphing into one. The clip didn't show this, but I remember Matt and Sam discussing whether Scanlan would have ever seen a triceratops before (because he wouldn't have been able to turn into one if he hadn't) in the stream (Matt was a lot harder on metagaming back then)
Truly the master of distractions :D They did an awesome job porting the scenario into the show. I've been having fun watching the show and going back to the campaign to see what made it in.

Haha even though it played out differently in animation I can totally see why. The pacing and visuals would have been out of sequence and have less of a kick had it been animated exactly as played. Equally hilarious, and equally Scanlan 👏
Liam saying "you can't get this on television" oh boy little do you know
I was wondering if Vedmire’s burn scar was a reference to GOTs The Hound. Seeing as vedmire is voiced by Rory McCann. Or it could just be a coincidence 🤷🏻♀️
Dude I 100% thought the same thing lol
Totally a casting choice, nice that they went all out with it!
Seeing how a lot of characters got a bit altered to fit better towards their VAs...I bet it was definetly a deliberate choice!
i like that while he didnt stinking cloud them in the show, they still made him fart at their face as a reference
I can´t believe how close the animated series stuck to the original DnD game!
"You can´t get this on national television." Well now you do.
Sam chose to play a bard because Liam told him it was "the worst class", which anyone who plays d&d can tell you is not remotely true for its version of the bard class. the power jump was a pretty surprise for them all
"Final Fantasy xIv" notification showing in the background made me go "o hell ya!! a fellow WoL!" xD ❤
Love Liam’s comment, “You can’t get this on Network Television ladies and gentlemen”.
Fast forward to 2023: ….rewatching this scene on the largest television streaming network
Amazing.
I.
LOVE.
SCANLON'S.
VOCALS.
OMG.
"Get off the roof, get off the roof, get off the roooof" energy
This. THIS is why D&D is so awesome.
I love how the fire breath potion is initiated through a gas reaction. Tying the ‘I fart on them as a triceratops’ line back into ‘the fire potion causes you gastric distress, resulting in a noxious emission before vomiting flames’ was a nice touch.
Matts Geralt cosplay tho!
I managed to watch the show without knowing it was based on D&D and now I can’t stop learning the backstory
6:35 "You can't get this on network television"... and just like that, we did!
Is Amazon network TV now?
"I gotta have some fun first"
cut to the house on fire
All that's missing is Liam singing the spell in this episode
"You can't get this on network television"
This aged well
You ever see the video of them reacting to the Kickstarter? Utter shock!
It's still not on network television.
i was not expecting the show on prime to be a sgood as it is but holy shit im glad i was so wrong.
This is one of the first episodes I remember Matt being so fucking excited to DM on stream.
Man, this translated so well into the show. I fuckin love th epic moment when he finally got the scroll to work
2:46 They probably could have cut to them and she points that out, then mid conversation they cut back to him and it continues in his mind
Again, thx for the work!
9:36 that entire episode was worth watching just for Sam’s singing.
Is no one going to talk about the beads that he previously mentioned to keyleth and then pulls them out of the bag
I love the little moments they add that only ppl who have watched theming playing get like Dungeons&Flagons
One of my favorite subtle things about the animated series version is Scanlan seeing the triceratops head in the Duke's trophy room before polymorphing into one. The clip didn't show this, but I remember Matt and Sam discussing whether Scanlan would have ever seen a triceratops before (because he wouldn't have been able to turn into one if he hadn't) in the stream (Matt was a lot harder on metagaming back then)
Awesome detail I missed.
not me crying on the outro with the cast singing 😂so good
Truly the master of distractions :D
They did an awesome job porting the scenario into the show. I've been having fun watching the show and going back to the campaign to see what made it in.
5:36 "Bigby's HAAAAAAAAAAND!".... i LOL every time
I love that the guards were playing D&D
This show's level of violence is amazing and I'm here for it.
I love seeing the parallels of the show and the cast
The guards playing DND is hilarious 😂
i love the legends & lore in d&d i dont know anything about the actual game its self,, Vox Machina animation was freaking awesome !! i want more
Thanks, Arsequeef.
They actually write the script for the series live, while also rolling the dice on which everything depends.
This is super cool.
