I’m 64 years old in 2 weeks and I had never heard this song till this weeks this is us episode. Absolutely the most beautiful song ever written. I probably listened to it 15 straight times Tuesday night. My X wife suffered mostly in silence from my years of neglect and lack of appreciation of her. I was asleep when she did make it known how unhappy she was. We had a beautiful family and 3 fantastic children. When I woke up it was too late for her after more than 30 years. No matter how hard I try I will always suffer from the pain and guilt of making her feel like she had to leave. She never thought I loved her. She was so wrong. It was me I didn’t love. I miss her and my family every day. Wake up and hear what your spouse is telling you. Divorce is way worse than a death in your life. I want to send this song to her but she would appreciate that. Life with no music would be very sad indeed. Most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. Thank you Mr Joel! 💔
Your words are very genuine and humble. It is a beautiful song that Billy actually had written many years before putting it out on an album. I hope your ex. hears your tribute.
I understand now why you neglected everyone. If you have never heard of this song, and assume you have some small background in listening to music, then I assume you have been living in a cave in the mountains of Montana with Kaczynski,
Neil, I like you have only heard this beautiful song for the first time and I'm 70 in April. I've read your post, I would call it regret and respect. I'm sorry that you have so much regret for your mistakes and loss. But on the other hand I have the upmost respect for you for your honesty of where you went wrong. I hope you have found it in your heart to forgive yourself. And equally your ex has found in her heart to forgive you. Best wishes.
It's his personal favorite song. Idk if it's underrated.. it's just not a poppy radio friendly song so it's not one of his hits. It's one of his most revered songs among his fans. Particularly musicians. The suspension and resolutions throughout this song are brilliant
the immense amount of pain this man must've been feeling to have been able to create such a masterpiece. i love billy so much. all of his songs are like poetry.
This song is perfection. Absolute perfection. I've become obsessed with it. I hadn't ever heard it before this week (and I'm 64!)...I'm in the middle of a piano course at the moment, and have chosen this song to learn and perform, because I can think of nothing I'd rather play. If this is the only song I ever play, I'll be more than happy.
When I was dating my wife 30+ years ago, she had a piano in her house and she had this sheet music on the piano. I had never played piano before (but I could read music) and I taught myself the song. Every time I came to pick her up for a date I would practice a little more. 30 years later, we have our own piano and this is one of my favorite songs to play.
One of my favorite touches about this masterpiece is something so subtle its easy to miss. But it adds so much.. At 1:55, immediately upon finishing the line “If my silence“, he hits the mute pedal. But only for one beat.. Then continues on. The effect of that is after saying “silence“, it actually was complete silence. Such a subtle yet brilliant touch.
I'm a self taught piano planer and have been playing this song for my wife for 35 years but never thought to do that at that moment. Thank you, I'm going to practice it tomorrow.
Funny, I was listening to this lovely song and the words immediately take me to someone from a long time ago, someone I loved very much, named Marilyn. I scrolled down the comments and see your name. Just one of those funny coincidences. And so it goes.
Umm, those "ear plugs" are called monitors. They have been used by musicians for decades. Instead of big speakers on the floor pointed up, they have in-ear monitors. Without them, singers would be all of the place.
When I met my wife she had a piano in her family home and the sheet music for this song. I can read music and taught myself this piece, never having played piano before. 32 years later we're still together and I still play And So It Goes for her.
What can I say for a song that has touched my heart each time I hear it? This is my go-to song now that I reflect on my relationship with my late husband over the years. Thank you, Billy Joel.
Summer, Highland Falls, I don't want to be alone anymore, Half a Mile Away and And So It Goes. I mean, the list is long, but I listen to those a lot. State of Grace is great, Scenes, Until the Night...I could keep going. :-D
