I would go as far as to say this is his best song ever. Although Souvenir is beautiful. I am certainly not knocking his great catalogue of amazing songs but this ballad is not just one of Billy's best but one of an entire century.
Billy once said it was one of his favorites, alongside "She's Right On Time," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," "You May Be Right," and "Vienna." That's some great company!
Ditto - me too. It is a classic. A song like Piano Man will always be popular as it is a fun song to sing along too with great imagery, but musically speaking And So it Goes is a masterpiece of writing. It will last a very long time due as it is a stunning piece.
Because a song like this is so emotionally powerful and touching. It cuts straight to the heart through the ear, and the only thing you can do is remain silent to absorb greatness like this. Fantastic!
Billy Joel - one of the best singer-songwriters of all-time. None of his pop compositions ever sounds generic, while not to mention he also backs it up with incredible piano and vocal skills as well. Respect! :)
I sang a version of this in choir. I enjoyed the song, but didn't really connect with it. And then at a perfect moment in my life, it came up on shuffle. I was on the way to work, and had to pull onto a side street and let it all out. It was the King's Singer's version. If you haven't heard it, you should check it out.
His voice only gets better with age. I was 5 in 1994 when I first remember my parents playing him over and over again. I would go on to play piano and admire him more. We saw him in about 2001. What an amazing man.
This song is so fucking gorgeous. Been a billy fan for a few years now and it seems that every new song I come across by him just impresses me more and more. Incredible artist.
Just one of his many many songs that are so underrated. I was lucky enough to see him at MSG last year what a fantastic time we had but sadly he didn't sing this one but he's got a lot of great songs. Much Love from the UK
A great musician that I probably won’t get to see live in my lifetime. What a shame as I have no doubt it would be an experience like no another. LOVE this song
This, Summer, Highland Falls, Vienna and Where's the Orchestra sound the best these days. Billy's got nostalgia in his voice and these songs to me are the most honestly performed. I think Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) wouldn't sound bad either!
Jakub Urbánek I was just thinking of Lullabye too , hoping to see it on the 28th at MSG.. or hear it I should say. Don't know how many rarities he'll bust out on that particular Thursday night but we'll see :) Sadly I don't have a camera but I hope some people do.
Can't beat some Billy. Spent a week on a cruise ship and this piano guy did Billy covers every night. My wife and I were there and never got enough. Good thing we had the drink package, that was at least 100 daiquiris and old fashioneds between us.
a truly perfect song...the studio performance is stunning. he is rushing a little here...the studio feel is true perfection if there was something such as perfection, this is it.
I am glad you got round to it. You would have missed one of the most beautiful piano ballads of the 1900's. It really is an impressive creation. I remember when I bought Storm Front on cassette the day it was released. This song was the last on the album and I knew then it was remarkable. Billy originally wrote it in 1983 so for a great song he sat on it for quite a while.
I used to hear this song on a series called "Signed, Seal, Delivered." It was the background music for two main characters who took many years to express how they really felt about each other.
WORDS by BILL JOEL: In every heart there is a room A sanctuary safe and strong To heal the wounds from lovers past Until a new one comes along I spoke to you in cautious tones You answered me with no pretense And still I feel I said too much My silence is my self defense And every time I've held a rose It seems I only felt the thorns And so it goes, and so it goes And so will you, soon, I suppose But if my silence made you leave Then that would be my worst mistake So I will share this room with you And you can have this heart to break And this is why my eyes are closed It's just as well for all I've seen And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows So I would choose to be with you That's if the choice were mine to make But you can make decisions too And you can have this heart to break And so it goes, and so it goes And you're the only one who knows
Such a beautiful song, Mr. Joel. You didn't perform this last Saturday night in Baltimore so I looked it up here. You gave us an absolutely fantastic performance, thank you.
Yea of course it's plain as day why he would choose this as his favorite...it s probably the best number he's ever wrote. God Bless Billy Joel Yes Turn the Lights back on!!!
Ived loved this man most of my life. I’m 70 I m so glad I can appreciate a broad spectrum of music. Billy’s was the first album I got high in the 70s not sure about all of these albums but I will share him with you
Got to know this song from Boston Legal. goodbye my love, have a happy marriage, I'm sorry I did not do well in this life, if there is a next life , please let me make it up to you, and let me be the best man for you next time 😖

Mr. Joel explained to Howard Stern that this was a very difficult song to write because his heart was broken. and he said it was his 'Top Song' - not sure what that means, but it is probably significant in some way.
Amazing that he wrote it in 82 and waited until 89/90 to put it as the closer of Storm Front. Great audience video btw. Is there a full version of this show by the fan?
I'd love to say something more poignant than Billy Joel's lyrics. But of course I can't "And so it goes" It's the same thing as "let it be" Beautiful phrases that means so much in brevity.
I think this is one of his greatest songs. I can’t listen without tearing up because I can relate to it 100%.
I would go as far as to say this is his best song ever. Although Souvenir is beautiful. I am certainly not knocking his great catalogue of amazing songs but this ballad is not just one of Billy's best but one of an entire century.

Billy agrees with you. As do I.

I love how the audience goes quiet as soon as it begins. It's so powerful.
Claire Del Sorbo, EXACTLY. I'm happy I wasn't the only one who picked up on that.
Just to listen. And cry. Its moving the heart, true bliss, and melancholy and pure emotions.
Because a song like this is so emotionally powerful and touching. It cuts straight to the heart through the ear, and the only thing you can do is remain silent to absorb greatness like this. Fantastic!
Billy Joel himself has stated that this is his defining song.
i cry every time i hear this. such great lyrics.
+karen creme Ditto
You can have this heart to break... so true...
listen to this too.... not better per se... but good ua-cam.com/video/njCps4jGaks/v-deo.html

Me too!!
Billy Joel - one of the best singer-songwriters of all-time. None of his pop compositions ever sounds generic, while not to mention he also backs it up with incredible piano and vocal skills as well. Respect! :)
The best "story teller" of our generation.
I play this song over and over while driving and when I need a cry...
I sang a version of this in choir. I enjoyed the song, but didn't really connect with it. And then at a perfect moment in my life, it came up on shuffle. A person who writes a song like this can be forgiven anything. ❤
His voice only gets better with age. I was 5 in 1994 when I first remember my parents playing him over and over again. I would go on to play piano and admire him more. We saw him in about 2001. What an amazing man.

God damn it. Thank you for writing and singing a song that has such an unusual but beautiful cadence. Your music is important to me.
Iambic tetrameter. Bahdum Bahdum Bahdum Bahdum. Love this song.
I FORGOT JUST HOW AMAZING THIS SONG IS!!! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
💯💯💯💯💯
I am litterally living this song out right now. Such an amazing song
Hang in there..... don't give up
Never give up brother
Just one of his many many songs that are so underrated. I was lucky enough to see him at MSG last year what a fantastic time we had but sadly he didn't sing this one but he's got a lot of great songs. Much Love from the UK
This song is beautiful! It was playing in the background of the "Miguel" episode of This Is Us. I'm so happy I learned about this classic.
This brought me here too 😭
Me too!
Brought tears to my eyes
I had not heard this until this episode. Love it!
I was at this concert and it was my first time listening to this masterpiece. One of my favorites now 8 years later
A great musician that I probably won’t get to see live in my lifetime. What a shame as I have no doubt it would be an experience like no another. LOVE this song
Beth, same for me. Ive Billy Joel fan since the 70s. I'd love to see him sing LIVE✌
I pray you have an opportunity to see him live🙏 my dad surprised me with tickets in March and it was indeed an experience like no other
If you can do it do it we saw him at MSG last september absolutely awesome.
The best song he ever wrote. ❤️
My favorite song. I cry each time.
There aren't many artists that sound as good live as they do in soundtracks. But Mr. Joel is one of them
This song has a deep, emotional feeling

Wow! Such a beautiful melody. Haunting, hymn-like, somewhat Celtic, ancient.
Well described. Conpletely agree!
This song always make smile when I hear this song i grow calm and peaceful
My most favorite love song! Thank you, Mr. Joel for your heart!
This song makes me nostalgic every single time
Thank you Bull for all your

WORDS by BILL JOEL:
In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you, soon, I suppose
But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows
So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make

One of the best song that I loved by Billy Joel.
Hauntingly beautiful :)
Such a beautiful song, Mr. Joel. You didn't perform this last Saturday night in Baltimore so I looked it up here. You gave us an absolutely fantastic performance, thank you.
So beautiful a song. One of his best. 👍🏾
very beautiful sentimental Billy's song. love it
Here after “Miguel” episode on “This Is Us”. I’ve been crying for two days. Life is all here… Is all here
wonderful quality/performance
Perhaps my favorite. We all have that one person…
One of my favourites too. In my opinion, the best song on Storm Front.
Magical!
>:O

Only a creative genius could compose such a melody.
Love the Piano Man !! 🙆😍🤗💓

1:58 that pause made me shudder... I've never seen an artist give a pause to a song that needed it so strongly
Yea of course it's plain as day why he would choose this as his favorite...it
s probably the best number he's ever wrote. God Bless Billy Joel Yes Turn the Lights back on!!!
The amazing Billy Joel!!!
Beautiful song
I love this song..........and I think a lot of us have been there ??
Beautiful❤
Stunning
Pure magic..
Classic Billy best done live
for sure mon...
he still can hit everything in this yayyy
Part classical Bach, part Beatles. Pure genius.
Yes, although I think he would prefer Beethoven ;)
Good comparison...i always felt BJ's other record (Nylon Curtain) was a conscientious effort to create a similar Beatles sounding album..
Don't forget Parry (the opening is identical to the first four iconic notes of his hymn 'Jerusalem.') A fabulous song.
yes...this guy was genius...his first LP even with the mistake in production for the higher tone...his first hit was brilliant...same deep feel
Bach not so much, more Irish traditional. Beautiful anyhow
Ye no doubt the greatest ballad ever wrote, end of ♥️♥️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
We all knew and felt when Billy showed up with his Piano Man album. Elton z John James Taylor. He definitely made his mark quickly still love him
I wish he would come to Vancouver next year...
Hard to keep a dry eye on this one !
Beautiful
utter genius
Thank you, Elle MacPherson, for crushing this poor guy.
Nobody does ist better than the composer himself since he knows best (and eventually) explains what he felt when the lyrics and notes came to him.
His best work, bar none.
Ived loved this man most of my life. I’m 70 I m so glad I can appreciate a broad spectrum of music. Billy’s was the first album I got high in the 70s not sure about all of these albums but I will share him with you
I will share your room n darn your socks... Saw 1979 London, Looking forward to Cardiff 24
Got to know this song from Boston Legal. goodbye my love, have a happy marriage, I'm sorry I did not do well in this life, if there is a next life , please let me make it up to you, and let me be the best man for you next time 😖
Years ago, Elton John gave this advice to song writers: When in doubt, write a hymn.
Or was it Billy Joel who said that?
In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose
But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
And this is why my eyes are closed

And you can have this heart to break

He played this at Wrigley Field. You could hear a pin drop.
I'd love to say something more poignant than Billy Joel's lyrics. But of course I can't
"And so it goes" It's the same thing as "let it be"
Beautiful phrases that means so much in brevity.
