Not trying to take away from the integrity of the section but, Mellophone's in general don't sound good as a blasting instrument. You really don't get the beautiful sound that it's supposed to have. But also no instrument should be blasted on, it's just not meant for that.

Of course they were out of tune. That was a show-off lick, it wasn't exactly meant to sound flawless. That also isn't in most mello players comfortable range. You do realize that mellophones/horns are a middle range.
