- Succession hit me like a truck when I watched it. I wasn't a fan initially, but this show blew me away. Season 4 being the last season is amazing and heartbreaking at the same time and I'm excited to see how it ends. I hope you all enjoy the show and the video! Let me know what you think!

I know that strange and hollow feeling well too. I knew my grandfather was sick and in the hospital, but instead of calling him, I kept putting it off due to work. I was in a different timezone so in order to call him, it would have to be during my work day. I was busy. I kept forgetting. I promised myself I'd do it the next day. Next day for sure. Then while at work one Thursday, my dad called and told me that grandpa had passed away. I never got to call him. I prioritized work instead of picking up the phone. I've come to peace with my frustration, but I still regret not taking the chance to speak to him one more time.
I would hope that my experience would be a story that people would have trouble trying to relate to, but it happens way too often. Your story of your grandfather breaks my heart and I hope you are doing well. Hope your grandfather rests in peace and hope you take care of yourself too!

The ironic detachment which has plagued nearly all of social media and the virtual world mirrors what you identify in Roy family dynamic- trauma based alienation from self and others and an inability to express empathy and vulnerability. I have been watching so many videos with well done but repetitive analysis of this show but your willingness to analyze this show in the context of your own life made think about how great art like this show affects people and holds a mirror to our lives. I’ve watched a lot of Succession video essays and for my money this is one of the best. While the disconnect the characters feel is obvious from the first few episodes the show constantly underlines and revisits it’s points. Characters often say the same thing different ways for comedic effect, plot points reoccur but are seen from different angles, so why not themes?
I think the fact that these characters feel so disconnected from each other and the world is one of the main reasons the show resonates so deeply. It’s a funny, dark, well written show but the isolation pretty much everyone feels is at the center. It’s just as important an element as money, power, or trauma within the show.

The How much is a gallon of milk scene is the greatest scene in the whole show. Maybe the greatest television scene of all time in my opinion. It says so much by saying so little. The disconnect between the rich & lower class. How it truly seems like we live in 2 different worlds. It also shows Why Logan ultimately hates his children. They’ve never had to work for anything unlike Logan who didn’t come from money.
I really respect you sharing about your dad and how you felt after losing him. I also lost my dad under sudden circumstances where I was not near him and I was too late to say anything meaningful to him in his last moments. That feeling of guilt and that you should have done more is overwhelming. The 3rd episode really struck me deep with the raw emotion of the siblings struggling to process the fact that they were witnessing the death of their father, completely separated and over the phone. Not nearly enough time to figure out what to say or how to feel. Even for the richest, most powerful people, this is the one circumstance that they cannot control. Amazingly written and edited video!

Hey I’ve watched a few videos on succession after finishing it and this one is by far the best, not only did you explain the emptiness at the end of the series but you really made me think about myself and reflect on my own connections. Thank you for sharing memories and emotions of your father, even in 29 minutes you’ve shown why he is proud of you. In the context of my life to my father, who is incredibly close to Logan in many ways, I’m Connor but I’m happy to not engage in the games and that’s my win. I’ve found connections and love through my mother’s side and don’t think about him often at all, luckily. He has an incredible amount of businesses but I don’t want to run that race, I hope Conor finds his peace elsewhere, just because youre on outsider in one circle doesn’t mean you will be everywhere❤

Thank you for your very honest approach and sociological analysis from Succession. This series is a magic work of art. A ferocious criticism to the banality of consumerism and the lack of connections and time from a "simple" ultra rich family from the US to a full society as the Japanese one that you mentioned. Very fine and human point of view about symphaty and connectivity, sadness and happiness in our current society. Your story relates very much to my own personal life when my father passed away. That reference is common and could be exponential in our times when we provide more attention to the gains in money (success) than the family emotional shares.

Your analysis is the best I've seen. You didn't get tied up in whether Kendall, Shiv or Roman deserved to be crowned(most people would say, CEO is a BS job that anybody can do). You saw that the show is asking the question: How the desire for power/wealth makes people unhappy. Humans evolved to cooperate with each other and when you make your own friends and family adversaries, your emotional well being will suffer. You can't take the money to the grave with you. So treat the people around you better and stop worrying about money so much.

This is my favourite succession video essay. I’ve been searching for one word to describe what the Roy family is missing that has messed each of them up so intensely, and it’s definitely ‘connection’.
I also really appreciate the realness you put forward here. I related to every personal connection you made to the show. When my dad passed I was in denial for a long time, and I really understood Roman’s breakdown at the funeral. I think the amazing thing about this show is that the audience can relate/connect with the characters despite them being so different from us.

I'm a massive fan of succession, it's my favorite show and i've seen it probably 3 times (once all the way as it came out), on my 4th rewatch now. Logans death hit me hard because I had just lost 2 of my grandparents and them being my first big losses family wise. The phone call part made me cry because it felt exactly like what I had experienced. somehow this show got across what many fail to do. great video essay!
I had the exact same experience in Japan. I had all the same feelings, alienation, anxiety, loneliness. I was surprised at the level of consumerism and the amount of merchandise sold there . The shrines were a relief, even if they were a harsh contrast to all the stores and restaurants. However, I felt better in quieter places, close to nature. Japanese nature is beautiful.
I loved the shrines and nature! It felt unbelievable to be "out in nature" but also still in a city area in some parks. Thanks for sharing and thank you for watching!
I thought the Japanese business succession secret of nominating the son in law for the CEO position had a very wise significance about the corporate future. The biological kids don't always have the competence. They lack competitive edges.
I had a panic attack in Tokyo too! Got it right at the crossing, was crazy seeing just such a large number of people in such a condensed spot, with all the lights and advertising everywhere. Took a few days to adjust.
That is something that is very weird but heartwarming to relate to someone with! Glad that there are people who have similar experiences and I hope you are doing well!
The winner was Logan Roy. He wanted to sell his company to GoJo and it happened. His kids never had a chance. Tom ended up being like Shiv in the previous seasons treating her cold as she did him Kendall was left alone with Colin (Logan's driver) and no family at all. Roman ended up where he began. And Greg, sadly was to stay but Mattson knows Greg is a traitor and he and Tom will play him with a salary cut to bare minimum plus hang him with all that might go wrong. Remember Greg has lied all through the series from his first scene right up until the end. I loved this show. Marsha said it all. Logan hurt everyone.
Kendall was left alone with Colin, who‘s not only his fathers driver and bodyguard (?), he‘s also the only other living person who knows for a fact that Kendall really killed another human, he knows and Kendall can’t deny it like he did with his siblings at the end. So Colin is a constant reminder of that, and kind of punishment for that, I loved that so much.

This was really well done. You put a lot into it, I can tell; you related it to your own life/ situations, experiences, and in a way that felt real, honest, and vulnerable-- and in a way that made the central ideas of your Succession critique feel much more personal and meaningful and relevant to reality, and not just as a film about a great work of fiction.
Especially in talking about human sympathy vs basic human empathy, your trip to Japan and the subsequent panic attack and depression; it resonated with me (I avoided Japan because I was worried about panic, but I get what you're saying , too, about "eating..shopping.. eating ... shopping... eating..." hyper-ultra-consumerism really is bizarre, and I can see why you'd start to wonder about what it all means, when going to a place like that for the first time and suddenly being bombarded by it all).
Depression sucks. I can empathize to a large extent with some of your story;. I remember having a remote job, travelling, and I wasn't wealthy, but I could go all over. And it was great to travel around and see the world and even just in this country: to travel all over; then after a while, I had a feeling similar to what you described, as it really seemed to resonate when you talked about that feeling of things seeming arbitrary, that, "what IS the point?,"-type feeling... It's lonely and it's weird and specific enough that a lot of people don't really get exactly where you're coming from and they just think you're spoiled because you're able to travel and see the world and they're not and the reality is it's not really what people think; it doesn't make a person super-wealthy just to travel and it doesn't mean that they're happier just because they see something else outside of the Shire, an effect that can be a cause of a lot of isolation and there's not enough personal connection and there's such a strong emphasis to be successful financially.
Sorry I'm ranting I just really like your video a whole lot and it really touched me. You rock.
Great sequencing work , by the way, it seemed pretty seamless and flawless, and left me just wanting to watch more Succession, and watch more of your videos, and yet I didn't feel like it was lacking in any way. Mad props.
Don't ever feel sorry for ranting! I love reading it and hearing your thoughts! The thoughts about the hyper-ultra-consumerism are great and the idea of traveling the world with a remote job can be isolating too. I think a lot of people are shocked to hear that traveling the world isn't the greatest thing in the world because that's what vacations are for, and people who are constantly in "vacation mode" struggle to appreciate it as much, especially without meaningful connections.

seriously amazing video. Having grown up with a very similar father to logan (emotionally/power wise, not financially), it's scary how much I can relate to it all. without a mother of the opposite nature, I wouldn't have been able to learn what empathy was, and learned to not admire that transactional, robotic form of love and connection that some use as currency. having to carefully orchestrate through conversations to avoid potential blackmail when you're 10 can do a number on you're psychology haha. Sadly the roy children don't have any examples of reality growing up

@King Fadal I can see a time jump. It would probably make sense to see Shiv with her baby and where the kids end up. I also saw a theory where it showed Ken, unhappy and surrounded by everyone in the company except his family as the last shot of the show. Lots of possibilities here!

What an awesome video! Well produced. I think what got most people hooked the simplistic plot of "money doesn't buy happiness" in the beginning episodes and even the wealthiest can be unhappy and either validates in terms of measure, they have a better quality of life because they may not be wealthy they can find happeniness or they are unhappy and can discern no matter how hard the struggle of life and even if you are at the very top of society it's the same outcome unhappiness, like the Roy Family. I hope all of you are the former and not the latter.
What this show quickly does it gets you vested in the characters. The plot development is unlike any other show I have seen. So masterfully thought out with sudden shifts the unpredictability keeps you wanting more. Then add on the comic relief at the show and last and the most important is the acting. Most shows I find myself getting so engrossed blur reality with what is being watched. With Succession, I am purposefully distance somewhat, admiring the level of acting. Waiting for that next truly miraculous moment where one the actors in that one seen encapsulates a truly Emmy winning scene and this show is littered with them.
There are so many but the Tom and Shiv beach and balcony scene (1 and 2), Kendall going to Stewy and Sandy after Logan doesn't show (3), Kendall's press conference (4), Logan talking to Kendall when it's Kendall who is decided to take the fall (5), Logan meeting with Pierce and the deal it's a snag (6), Roman telling Mattison off on the mountain (7), Tom and Kendall meeting and Tom telling Kendall how Logan always wins (8), Shiv speaking to Logan who is already dead over the phone (9). I could go on for days.
With the show coming to an end in just two episodes. I have no doubt that these truly unique moments when they are all happening and we identify they are going to come flooding in. And my ultimate hope is the final scene of the entire show ends on one of this masterful moments, similar to the end of Season 2 with Kendall at the press conference. Where it is so shocking and so well acted where it draws a conclusion for some form of closure but also leaves it open to interpretation.

It's very true that connection is what they ignore that would cause all their unhappiness but connection isn't all. It happens that I watch the show when studying the conditionality concept from the dharma, everything is connected in an infinite web, knowing that connection is a fact of life that suggests compassion but knowing that I depend on others in many ways would suggests something that is equally important, that is humility.

I know it is strange but I ALWAYS rooted only for Ken. In every episode. Every scene. I don’t know why but I just always did. This is why the end was so heart breaking for me and still makes me think. But it was the best and most logical ending possible.

Wow! What a beautiful analysis. Unfortunately, this show is all too relatable for myself. From an emotional stand point of course. I have so many emotions when I watch it and I think it may be my favorite drama that I’ve ever seen. I love the writing and the psychology of this toxic family, but what makes it great is that I can relate and understand the characters even though these are completely different scenarios obviously.

This is more than a simple review of succession, is a very deep conversation about life. That happened to me when I immigrate 2 times in my life the second time was more difficult because I achieve a high standard of living due to a great work but then I got little bit lost in how to enjoy it

I like to believe the old guard (Frank, Karl, and Gerri) and Lukas won against the new guard (Ken, Shiv, and Rome).
The old guard got their parachutes or have control for their future by leaving the family after the deal. Lukas is the new Logan. The new guard is stuck in the loop through the stock ownership but have no considerable power (especially Shiv) or their childish tendencies will hurt them forever. Tom and Greg are just there but have no meaningful play.

Found this video by chance. Fantastic and insightful observations and analysis. Stunned you have only 556 subs; I guess you're not giving UA-cam enough money to get their algorithms to work for you.
I've been to Tokyo and Seoul, totally get what you said about the alienation, but to be fair, I live in Paris and the level of alienation and loneliness mixed with zombie connection to digital and consumption is about the same. The difference may be that Far East Asians are products of and conditioned by Confucianism which make them completely docile and obedient to authority, personal expression is strictly discouraged.
Though I really appreciate Succession for its high quality in writing, acting, cinematography, the show brings me down, I don't feel good after watching each episode. Every character is a sociopathic asshole. Though one could argue that the creators of this show addressed heart and humanity by their omission, I think the show would be far more powerful with just one character who still has genuine heart and humanity, as was the case in King Lear.
UA-cam has graciously awarded me more subscribers so I am grateful for that. I guess they got my check in the mail. Excited to continue to make more.
That's an interesting viewpoint! Zombie connections are all too common in this digital age and the teachings of Confucianism isn't something I'm too familiar with but could be interesting to learn more about.
And I totally get you about Succession. It was actually a rare show that I found was better airing weekly rather than binging it because it gets too depressing and the week allows the emotions and ideas of the show to sit with you. I think the show also exhibits a glimpse of a genuine heart for the characters as some you are shocked when they show a bit of compassion, but then immediately remind you that they're awful. One character who had heart would have been an interesting dynamic, but I fear they would not have survived the show. The good always go too early
