- Hello Socratica Friends! We’re here to help you be a great student! Are you interested in studying Physics, but you don’t know where to start? Today we have a special guest, Simon Clark, PhD, who will give us some great advice about how to study Physics. We’ll talk about how Simon got inspired by Physics demonstrations and activities as a kid, and how his studies progressed at Oxford and the University of Exeter. You may be surprised to hear how much math is involved when you study Physics! Simon gives some great practical advice about how to learn this most fundamental of the sciences.
Simon made a video that ties in with this one, all about the Physics books he would recommend for you. You can find that video over on Simon’s channel here:

They say we're here to become better students but let's be honest...we're procrastinating.
I got an A in my Physics O-level exams,but I failed my Physics A-level exams (I got a D and U) :(.......
True true
Funny
How did you know 😂
My physics homework staring at me- .....
Those who love physics always say that physics is tough because they always try to understand it deeper hence they get doubts.
How to Study Physics = Study Math. Physics is a lot of Math. If you don't like math you might not like physics. Yes. True. I agree. Good video I liked it.
Idk it's opposite for me i like physics and hate maths
@@eternaleffect2499 i thought I was the only one lol
I think physics isn’t just about your math skills. .. I studied physics twice as much as calc 2 and ended up failing it w a 49%, while on my calc 2 test I got a perfect score. I think it has to do w more critical thinking skills and understanding the meaning of the problems and understanding what there saying....
That only applies to people studying for a Physics degree. HighSchool or lower Physics rarely involves tough mathematics.
@@eternaleffect2499 may I ask what grade of physics do u enjoy learning or do u just learning from youtube, lemme tell u, the physics u learn in youtube hardly ever gonna help u in ur research or science experiement, in yt , u thought u learn alot where u learn almost nothing from it. just the basic concept
This gives me the confidence to study physics. I am struggling at the moment. I am studying basic physics And maths. I have a love hate relationship with it. I need to study some physics to study what I want but I find it hard any tips.
athena energy Shine me tooo
same here i can feel you
athena energy Shine try to understand the concept and why does the equations work then solve as much problems as u can at least that’s my method and don’t just rely on the teachers do some extra research
I really did hate physics but I start watching documentaries about physics and start to understand and love it and because of that my mark got higher
You can't understand a subject if you hate it you must love it to get better marks
athena energy Shine I could help if u live in NYC
Why aren't they are saying how to study physics....we all know what is physics please....😑😑
They have . 1.First learn to appreciate physics. 2. Master all your basics. 3. A ton of Problem Practice.
Actually the most of the people don't understand what physics is, even when they think they're masters, basically because the physics you learn in highschool is what I call toy physics, concepts are not formal concepts, you don't even use calculus, experiments are not studied in a scientific way you just see what happens and try to relate the phenomena with theory based on that toy physics.
On the other hand, if you really know what physics is, I guess you don't need a video about "how to study physics", you must be a genius.
exercise. drill. practice.

I may have dropped out of college, but the dream lives on.
"Anyone can do Physics"...yeah, unless you are in an Indian University cramming up derivations after derivations and trying to complete your degree in 3 years
Soumyaneel Manna
We just copy from the texts, remember every equation by heart and paste it on the exam sheets
sidharth cs, you must be talking about Engineering, or better Universities. In Calcutta University, you cannot only memorize the equations by heart. You also have to remember its derivations by heart too.
Soumyaneel Manna
I'm at calicut university
sidharth cs, Calicut University seems to be better than Calcutta University. Not to stereotype, but looks like Keralites are better at studies than Bengalis :-P
Hahaha so true
Is nobody gonna talk about his Bob Ross T-shirt?
Really nice video btw! It helped me quite a bit :).
I search the comment section to find comments like this. :-)
This channel is brilliant! Your videos are awesome and very useful. If only there were contents like this in Italy.. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for saying that I am will be a better student after watching all of these videos, I have done it for 4 hours now instead of doing homework.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Learn C first so you not only get a very good understanding of programming, but a more intricate idea of how a computer works. After that, picking up other languages is pretty easy.

I'm so dumb, but this video makes me fall in love with physics. Guys wish me luck as I am signing my death warrant today ordering me some IGCSE Physics books to start with.
Ahhhh you're going to have fun! 💜🦉
This video helped me alot..... It increases confidence and make me feel to do hardwork for become better in physics ... Thnx....

Thanks Simon for your well-timed advice on starting with python! Also, great interview Socratica
Hey! Great video, great advice. A strategy is fundamental to anything in this life. Great job.
I am very good at math, but physics is so difficult for me.I just don't get it and our teacher doesn't explain and yells at us when we don't get a thing right.
I am not good in maths but i love doing physics in my olevels i got a D in maths but a B in physics
Well done you!! That's fantastic. Please don't give up on your maths yet! It really does help with everything. 💜🦉
Great video! Really looking forward to ‘How to study maths’.
I didn't know there's an English version of Socratica (...which is probably the original version of the channel). Your English is awesome, btw! This feat with Simon took me by surprise when I searched how to be good at physics. Both your and Simon's channels do a great job promoting science.
Love you Socratica for your every video.

This is great, I think I'm going to declare my major as Art History...
you see... i would do more questions but I'm unsure if I'm doing them correctly... usually, there aren't answers available online after questions yk.... and generally, I'm a shy, anxious person, so asking my teacher every time, scares me.. it will be a lot of time and I'm sure she will get irritated
We totally get it! That's another reason why those books of solved problems are so useful. Hang in there!! 💜🦉
I am able to do physics, maths not so much.
The only reason i understand the maths is the application
Dutchik yeah same , I can do physics really well but my maths isn’t that good
City Strolls No one understands physics without understanding maths. Dont kid yourself
The most important thing is Hardwork.
I really hate physics but after this vid i really want to go and study physics now 😂
every student at any level should watch these kinda videos
Thanks for making this video this is very useful video for me

Love from Bangladesh. Excellent Video!!
Mm the most fundamental science is Mathematics
Daniel Alejandro Martinez Mathematics is not technically a science since you cannot make experiments to prove its statements. Its just a language or tool you use to make predictions in sciences such as physics or chemistry. Physics is really the fundamental science to which all others can be traced back. Remember, what you do is just what atoms in you body collectivelly do. The question of course is why math works so well in describing our physical world. Or is it physical .... ? Might be just a computer .... but that is philosophy, the mother of physics :)
Math is just a language through which the universe communicate with us.
No because Math itself does not have a fundament. You need to define axioms on which you build up mathematical concepts.
math is a tool to simplify certain steps in various subjects.
h4rder10 Not just a tool. It can be a tool but the goal of mathematics isn’t to serve other fields. That’s a consequence. It’s a pursuit of its own. It has its own goals just like any other fields.

'Growth mindset' - I know this is off topic and on the 'other side' - but if you're a History student at A Level why not try Sir John Fortescue 'On the Governance of England' in the ORIGINAL 15th century English - worth the sweat as he is fascinating on the balance between central government and other power bases - and on government by consent rather than simple royal, dictatorial 'fiat'.
On the STEM side, 'How To THink Like A Mathematician' might be one good place to start - Kevin Houston's exercises in particular are really very good and are not just drill - he makes you think!
Thanks socratica
The pandemic has surely screwed all chances of me being good at Physics in Secondary School .Let's see if I can be another Tesla or Einstein using these methods .Is it too late .I will be starting high school in 2023 .
