In praise of indies, women's prizes and Canadian Fiction-Hey Simon and Louise. I’m writing again to say thanks for your loyalty to women’s writing. I am an avid fan of you both. As a former CBC book reviewer I am a huge advocate of the “chunkster”. In the early days of radio we not only read and reviewed fat reads- we were given plenty of time to review them- 15 minutes. Now it’s two minutes a book. I left the world of radio to write and am so happy you guys dedicate more than one minute to books you deem worthy. NOW that you’re a Kingsolver BFF Simon I encourage you to read Prodigal Summer. I reviewed a few of hers, read them all and STILL that’s my favourite (Louise, I believe you will love the older women). I have also been dedicated to the new Carol Shields prize. I believe you have the Sleeping Car Porter, which was in the running and won our Canadian Giller prize. SO if I may add to your Canadian book list of must-reads and great CDN writer-heroes. Reading onward! Madonna in Saskatchewan.

-Carol Shield’s: Larry’s Party (a man who is an expert on Labyrinths) and Republic of Love

-Mary Lawson: Crow Lake (brother, sister and nature)

-Paulette Jiles: The Colour of Lightning; Stormy Weather; News of the World (a movie now, better as a book)

-Lisa Moore: February(one of my all-time favourite novels about losing a husband to an accident and starting life over); Alligator
-Marina Endicott: The Difference (Yes, it takes place on a ship but it’s hugely engrossing as it looks at the lives of a woman and her sister accompanying the woman’s husband around the world as a trader
-Michael Ondatjee: Coming Through Slaughter (early jazz era New Orleans); In the Skin of The Lion (my fav out the building of bridges in Toronto but of course so much more about richly drawn characters) and for Nonfiction his memoir about his family- Running in the Family.

-Elizabeth Hay; Late Nights On Air; Garbo Laughs
-Thomas King: Medicine Walk; Green Grass, Running Water
-Timothy Findlay: The Telling of Lies; Famous Last Words (My fav); Not Wanted on the Voyage; The Piano Man’s Daughter
Guy Vanderhaeghe: The Englishman’s Boy ( about making cowboy westerns in 1920’s ); The Last Crossing

Oooh thanks so much for all these recommendations. I have read and loved Larry’s Party in fact mum and I read that when we read all the women’s prize winners we hadn’t for their 25th anniversary. Been meaning to read Lisa Moore for ages. I feel like I’ve read Crow Lake but also not sure I actually have. I had definitely read The Sleeping Car Porter, this very month, so my thoughts will be in a wrap up soon.

I agree that it's so hard to decide between most of the books this year. There was only one that I disliked from the entire longlist. I wish I'm a Fan had made the shortlist as I think it's an absolutely brilliant book. IF forced to choose my top pick, it would be Trespasses. I thought it was so gorgeously written and it captures the quiet/day to day moments that happen during times of chaos. My ranking would be Trespasses, Pod, Fire Rush, Black Butterflies, Demon Copperhead and Marriage Portrait.

Ah, I have been waiting for this video! Simon, what did you do with your Christmas presents???? You two are a riot together. Impossible for me to predict this year’s winner. My personal order is DC, Trespasses, MP, Black Butterflies, Fire Rush and Pod. I admire so much about Fire Rush but I just didn’t love it, I think mostly because the form of storytelling it uses is not my favorite. If it were not for the Pulitzer, I would expect DC to be the favorite. I know a lot of people who thought Trespasses was flawed, but I loved it. We’ll see very soon.

But did you see the article in the Guardian about the sales figures of the books on the shortlist? Maggie O'Farrell has sold 73k copies, Barbara Kingsolver about 45k, whereas Pod, Black Butterflies, and Fire Rush have only sold a couple of thousand each. Huge disparities!
