Definitely want to see the “under the radar” video. Not only can we celebrate what we already share in common as readers, but we can help each other find new stuff to love! BookTube can do more than serve the consensus; it can shape it and expand it. Great video, Shelly!
Please don't judge until you read it! "A Gentleman in Moscow" is my FAVORITE fiction novel in the last 10 years or so. I'm thrilled it was near the top of the list because so many of the books people voted for are about young people. "A Gentleman in Moscow" is about adaptation and evolution and illustrates how those who can adapt to change are the ones who survive. It's a slow-paced book that subtly weaves in history, philosophy, politics, literature and diplomacy and it will leave you wanting to stand taller, speak more eloquently and cultivate impeccable manners. I love it!
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyDthe more Russian literature you will read the more you will hate the world, justify violence, wars and think that nuclear threat is the only argument
Thank you Shelly.. I have read 43 and have another 22 on my TBR shelf. Do you think maybe booktube contains my people? 😊 Would love to see the further video to explore more booktuber gems.
First off, girl, you are rocking those earrings! Can't remember seeing a video where you wore black, but those colors look good on you! I'm so glad you picked the collective brain of your viewers, more items for the tbr! Re. Eleanor Catton, since you said you loved Luminaries, I saw that she was the screenwriter for my now-favorite Austen movie, Emma. (2020). Thought I'd throw that in there for anyone doing the Jane Austen July prompts 💙
Phenomenal work, Shelly! Brava! I’m not surprised that there’s so much overlap between this list and the combined NYT’s two top 100 versions because, well… popular books! Yet there ARE titles here that didn’t make the cut for the NYT, so that’s cool. I have read 48 out of the 76 you mentioned. I would LOVE to hear more about the under-the-radar titles.
Wow. 5 books in and I’m absolutely obsessed with this list. I have strayed from modern literature. Now I found 76 reasons to get re-interested in coming back. My tbr is strong- and just getting better - thank you! THIS is a list!!
Shelly, thank you so much for putting this together - loved it and what a lot of work! I didn't manage to get my vote in but The Fifth Season was definitely going to be on here for me, so was glad to see it. I think you would like it very much. I've read 27 and have many more of these on my tbr, so this list is actually for more reflective of me as a reader than the NYT list. It also made me realise, I'm not just a 'backlist' reader after all as I read quite a few of these when they were released! Loved this.
Thank you for your work, here, Shelly! It does not go unnoticed nor unappreciated :) I'm SO interested in what other titles were- the hidden gems, under the radar books. It would be so interesting to see if any of those you mention have a surge in popularity, even just in this booktube space! I've only read 5 of these books but own (unread) 19 of the others. And I know of all 76! There are also some authors I've read from who are mentioned but the specific book on the list is not the one I've read.
Thanks for your work. I have been on a reading binge since I discovered reading glasses that make print so much clearer. There are so many books in the bookstores, so I'm faced with what to buy? I was fortunate to have a lucky streak of reading: The Goldfinch, Gilead, Bullet Train, All the LIght We Cannot See, Shogun, and Home. These were all 3 stars is my simplified system in which 3 stars is the highest score. Lately, I have been running into popular books that I cannot finish.
Thank you so much for creating this list. I actually have read a few of these! I made myself a list for my TBR. I was also glad to see that I already owned some of these, but just haven't gotten around to reading. I just read All The Light We Cannot See this year! Loved it.
There are some wonderful books on this list. Thanks for compiling this into a video! I’ve read 44 of them and would like to read just about all of those on the list I haven’t gotten to yet.
I can't scream THANK YOU loud enough.... what an incredible feat putting this together, and I LOVED every second of it. It reminded me that I have Ducks Newburyport on my shelf, and have started it a couple of times.... I want to get in to it. I'd love to see another video of the hidden gems that only got a couple of votes, or that you'd never heard of.
Thank you so much for this fabulous video! I didn't submit votes because I haven't read that many contemporary books that I love. My genre is 19th century classics but on this list I have read Harry Potter (ADORE) Hunger Games (liked, but found the 3rd book disappointing), The Goldfinch (modern masterpeice, absolutely love), Shadow of the Wind (sucked me into the story until the climax fell off after that), The Kite Runner (I read it so long ago but I remember I couldn't put it down). But I have a lot of these on my shelves and can't wait to get to them esp. Wolf Hall. Also, you look really beautiful in this video, your hair, earrings and makeup are great. And I am looking forward to a video of lesser known gems. Maybe you could ask for submissions for "books that you loved that no one else seems to know about" to add to your list? Just a thought. Anyway, loving your content and all the hard work you put in to make these videos, thank you!
I’ve read 38 on the list. Much more than the original NYT list which was only 18. I look forward to a follow on video of the more obscure books. ☘️👋🍀📕📖📚☕️
The Heart's Invisible Furies. Possibly one of my favourite books ever. I'm so happy to see it show up on a list 🥰 Thank you so much for your effort and taking the time to put this excellent list together. My TBR has gone to the next level 😅
Gosh what an amazing job you’ve done putting this list together, thank you so much, I’ve loved watching it, A Gentleman in Moscow is fabulous, you must read it, it’s a wonderful story of resilience. Interesting how many dystopian/apocalyptic books made the list!
This is such a cool project. I wonder how this Booktube generated list will change if you did this same thing next year, or in 5 years, etc. I'd love to see a Goodreads or Storygraph group for folks wanting to 'read the list' for our own homegrown top 100 list. (If there is interest I'd be happy to set up such a group on Goodreads. Also, we need a listchallenges list for this so we can check off our finished books for this list. )
I’ve read 14… I own 61… Ummm, I better get to reading! I’m so excited to dive into these. ☺️ Thanks for doing this list, and yes yes yes on the “Bonus” compilation-very much looking forward to checking them out, too!
So fun! I have read 35 and have many others I want to read and some I have never heard of but will now put on the radar- thanks for doing this! Oh I hope you love shadow of the wind!
A very interesting list! I've only read 3 and DNFd 1 (Piranesi - and I tried 2 different times - lol). But, I'm not a fan of extensively descriptive settings and the dynamics of relationships. I do have 4 more on my bookshelves and will research more of the recommendations. Thank you again so much for all of your time and energy in compiling the list!!
I saw “All The Light We Cannot see” miniseries in Netflix and loved it. Three books I love from the 21st century are “The piano tuner” (Daniel Mason), “Chocolat” (Joanne Harris) and “Picture Maker” (Penina Keen Spinka)
I’ve read 20 & have 12 on my TBR (+maybe several I will add now!) would love to see a video of the more obscure mentions as those often turn into favorites I wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to!

I'm surprised that none of these lists had The Midnight Library or any Matt Haig book for that matter or any Geraldine Brooks. Both authors are just fabulous...
Thanks for all your time doing this, Shelly. I think on the whole we've made a good list! I'm sad Tana French didn't make it, but that's how it goes. Must say, I'm glad that out of all the Stephen Kings, people chose that one. I've only read 12 titles, and happen to be currently reading one too. Looking forward to the honourable mentions!
I read Never Let Me Go and liked it, but I also recently purchased Unconsoled also by him.. I did start it and am enjoying it so far. I enjoyed Tom Lake. Devil in the White City was really good. I loved The Thirteenth Tale!
I've read 27 of these books. I didn't necessarily love all of them, but unlike the NYT's list, I've at least read a good handful, and either own or already had a few more on my TBR. Really interesting to see what other readers love and I'd love to hear about the lesser known titles you've collected.
