  • Monday, May 21, 2012, Rye Performing Arts Center, Rye High School, Rye, New York - Rye Middle School Spring Concert. 6th grader Esther Yu is presented for a very rare solo at a standard middle school band and orchestra concert, and the audience soon learns why.
    She stunned the audience with her virtuoso performance of Hungarian Rhapsody (abbreviated, because of time constraints), prompting an unprecedented, spontaneous standing ovation from the crowd.
    Try not to smile at the end.... ;-)

      AkwadGaming YT where though? even if there were out of tune notes, she does not appear to be using tapes or stickers, so it's not all her fault.

      Lol not using tapes or stickers so it's okay to be off tune lmfao. The tape is a very approximate marker for where to put fingers. To get a note really in tune you need precision of width of hair. There was a lot of messing about - the right notes but just a hint of being out of tune. I know - i suffer from the same issue on parts of the finger board. Though I think her main issue is not having the finger strength or sitting position to press down where she wants to with more ease for such a fast piece resulting in unusual inaccuracy (like whole passage shifted a tiny bit flat/sharp).

    As the poster of this video, I am making it a point to remove any racist, xenophobic or otherwise discriminatory comments, so don't even bother (and if you do, you should be ashamed of yourself). This is an 11-year old girl who has worked very, very hard to play so beautifully. Anyone - of any age - willing to post such hateful comments should direct that time and energy toward trying to make something as beautiful as the music with which this girl has graced us.

      +Michael Riley I can totally relate to her! I'm also a cellist, and I share classes with Sai Sai Ding. The first time I heard him was in 8th grade (I'm a freshman now). I was first chair in the Honors group (he wasn't in it because of scheduling conflicts) and he had invited the whole orchestra to go to his concert at the DSO. It was a wonderful surprise. He's been playing for around 8 yrs now, I think. You can check him out on UA-cam, but I mean...this kid has literally played concerts around the world.As for this particular child, it is very inspiring to see this kind of virtuosity at such a young age.(Although I don't think I'm going to be practicing 6-8 hrs/day any time soon.) She's playing Popper like it's Bach's Suite No.1! I am definitely interested in how she's doing now.

    Love it! She owns that piece! You could watch her technique. She knew where, when and how to make it sing. She had me studying her hands, positions and her anticipation. She could have turned that piece inside out just as well as playing it straight. Don't any of you youngsters fret and compare yourselves. She may have put more work into that piece than many of you put it your instrument in a year.BRAVO!

  • @otakumasta6200

    Magnificent! Okay. Now. For the peeps out there who are feeling ashamed right now, PLEASE TAKE IN CONSIDERATION THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH YOU HAVE GROWN UP IN AS WELL AS THE DIFFERENCE IN HOW MUCH YOU PRACTICE. Output=Input. Not everyone's parents are encouraging, or tiger moms, or impassive. Also, everyone learns at a different pace. Furthermore, for those who have an impermeable skull, there is always someone out there who will be better at something we do. It is a fact of life. The faster you realize it, the less blood vessels you'll burst.

      I taught guitar for years and honestly theres no such thing as "Talent". Theres just practice, practice and more practice. ANYONE can be a maestro on an instrument. Just gotta believe in yrself. This kids incredibly talented. But when she first picked up that cello, she didnt even know which way to hold the bow. Everyone , even the worlds greatest, start from the beginning. It just takes practice!

    • @shayneoneill1506
      @shayneoneill1506 7 років тому +1

      All sorts of reasons for that. Perhaps a culture in the family of not striving to always be better, or perhaps the parents have been disparaging the kids. All sorts of things can be poison to a developing musician.

      +ogenmatic From www.fromthetop.org/musician/esther-yu/ (NPR radio show showcasing top young classical musicians):
      "Esther Yu (cello), 15, is from Rye, New York, and attends Rye High School while studying cello with Minhye Kim in The Juilliard Pre-College Division. She won third prize in the 2015 Johansen International Competition in Washington, D.C., and was a semifinalist in the eighth International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. She is also the principal cellist of the Juilliard Pre-College Symphony. Outside of music, Esther loves to volunteer for non-profit organizations, inspired by her father, who goes to Peru as a medical missionary."
      Esther was on that radio show in January 2016 and is scheduled to be on it again in May (see above web address for details).

    ._. That must cost a lot of money to go to that school... At my middle school all we had were Clarinets, Saxes, Trumpets, Flutes, Trombones, and Tubas. I can see they have a lot more. I had to teach myself how to play the violin... D:

      Actually I go to the school and it's a public school! But it's not where she learned to play, I think she does some sort of program at Julliard (I think, I don't know her really but the orchestra teacher likes to talk about her a lot). But the school orchestra is pretty good too

      Oof I don't really agree. Yes, in some respects, kids can get absolutely nothing done in their lives, spending endless hours on their phones. But for me, personally, if I didn't have a smart phone, I wouldn't find songs that made me to play cello. I wouldn't find people like YoYo Ma that inspire me to play. I simply wouldn't be the cellist I am without a smartphone.

    I've said this before but it's sad when I don't seem to see them smile. Yeah they're good, but if you can't smile and enjoy waht you're doing, it just looks like you're there because yo uhave to be, get what I'm saying? Good playing, I'm sure she had hours of practice. XD Probably insane number of hours but you know, practice helps--I just hope she's doing it beacuse she wants to, and nto beacuse her parents made her. ... that's all.

    • @ljumpsky9519
      @ljumpsky9519 8 років тому +1

      I agree. It seems she's "playing by the numbers". I admire her ability, but I don't get any sense of love of the music.

    • @HegemonWiggi
      @HegemonWiggi 8 років тому

      +PenWielder Magic What? She has a huge grin on her face as soon as she finishes! Everyone expresses themselves differently, some people dont or cant smile while they play. Playing something like that (or anything really) takes such a huge amount of focus that it's often hard to smile. I know I hardly smile when I play. She's fine.

    • @PenwielderMagic
      @PenwielderMagic 8 років тому

      +Julian Canjura there is a point there- I'm just saying that she has ability and I hope she is enjoying herself and not because she's forced to fulfill some quota(and no I am not saying this because she's Japanese, I have a Japanese friend who is very lax and still plays piano so lol)

    • @illegalgamer7102
      @illegalgamer7102 8 років тому

      It’s a good critique. The girl is good, not amazing. I know kids who could play saint saens 3rd movement flawlessly at 12. Her arm is also super tight, I see arm problems if she continues with the clenching.

      They're not being rude. They obviously do appreciate her hard work. They're just trying to explain that she isn't exactly the perfect player yet. You need emotion to play, and that comes with years of playing.
