The World Islands Dubai | $14 BILLION bet on Man-made Islands

- The World Islands in Dubai are a construction and engineering wonder, they're also mostly deserted islands. These man-made islands, which cost an estimated $14 Billion to build, were constructed via a method called "land reclamation". In 2003, Sheikh Mohammed unveiled The World Islands. This mega project was planned to consist of nearly 300 small, artificial islands constructed to resemble a map of the world. Located in the waters of the Persian Gulf, just 4 kilometers off the coast of Dubai, the construction of the World Islands began in September 2003.
The islands were to be composed of nearly 321 million cubic meters of sand dredged from Dubai's shallow coastal waters and 31 million metric tons of rock, all of which would be surrounded by an oval-shaped breakwater island. A vast majority of the islands were purchased by large commercial groups. However, fast forward to today, and most of The World Islands are still empty and there is hardly any development. In fact, there are only 2 or 3 islands that are completely functional and available for commercial use. 17 years and $14 billion later, the 300 artificial islands now sit vacant, most of them bare and completely undeveloped. So what happened with this extraordinary project? Did it fail? Or is there still hope?
Today, although the status of the World islands remains uncertain, development work has started on a few islands. The most noticeable project currently being built in The World Islands is the $5 billion dollar Heart of Europe project being developed by the Kleindienst Group. This ambitious project aims to develop European-themed luxury tourist resort that will have many attractions including a Raining Street, where it will rain artificially whenever the temperature rises above 27 degrees Celsius, an outdoor snow plaza, and the first underwater hotel. The Phase One opening of the Heart of Europe will consist of Sweden Beach Palaces, Germany Villas, heart-shaped Honeymoon Island, Portofino Hotel and the Cote d'Azur Resort.

Do you think The World Islands will ever get fully developed? Would you plan a trip to Dubai to visit The World Islands? Let us know what you think!
I feel like it’s going to be fully developed buts it’s going to take decades and once it’s done it’s going to be a whole new world
@@jchr3975 I agree. This will get done. And when it is, I think it’s going to be amazing.
The fact that they said they seem to be sinking makes me not want to visit 😅
@@albalina Thanks for watching! From what I’ve seen lately, they’ve either got the sinking under control or everyone is too worried about the pandemic to report about the island’s continued sinking. Either way, I think I’ll be tempted to visit when they’re done.
No, most will be destroyed in WWIII
I adore Dubai and have been there many times. I have faith in the sheikh's vision and do believe that one day these islands will be developed. However due to covid-19 the UAE -like all countries- and especially Dubai are struggling. Hopefully the Expo will be successful maybe turn things around.I found your video interesting and have suscribed to your channel.
Melina - thanks for subscribing! I agree with you ... these islands will get developed over time and once finished, will be an excellent vacation spot!
One day i will visit this place and it will be unforgetable ....
You won't find it it will be sunk into the sea

Which island would you want to visit first? For me, it would have to be the Heart of Europe. Looks pretty amazing!

wOw 🌏️😲
Thanks!
Is Philippines there?
Yes,
What a waste.
I think UAE can do it!
If there's a country in the world that can, I think you're right. Thanks for watching and commenting!
The most extraordinary thing about these islands is that they did not calculate the tidal flows and now the water is not safe to swim in due to poor circulation
Certainly a lot to learn and improve on. You still have to admire the ambition to get something like this done though. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Unbelievable. 🤦🏼♀️
What @kierj9858
Plant mangroves
Not a bad idea. Would certainly help with the erosion.
