    So I played Disgaea 1 day one when it first came out. I was a huge fan from the beginning. Disgaea took what I enjoyed about tactics style strategy rpgs and added some anime flair.
    I was really into Disgaea 1-3 then ended up taking quite a long hiatus from the series, having skipped 4. Then two years ago I decided to play Disgaea 5 and fell in love with the series again. I skipped 6, but am ready to dive back in with 7 based on reviews like this. Just give me an interesting and funny story and a battle system with deep mechanics so I can become an overpowered demon god. I'm still not sure if I'll like the switch to 3d character models.

    I still don't understand why they even decided to move to 3D. Their old 2D sprites and animations had a very unique charm and look to it, not found anywhere else. Moving to 3D just made it look worse and more generic. The whole game feels much cheaper and amateurish as a result.
    Not to mention they pretty much barred themselves from re-using all the assets they already had created for past games, something they've been making very good use of. That's probably the chief reason so many systems from previous games are missing in 6 and 7, because they had to do so many things from scratch there just wasn't enough time. So, why? Why take all those steps back? We are now 2 brand new Disgaea games away from the 5th one, yet they both feel completely inferior to it. Actually forget 5, Disgaea 4 is a much better and complete experience than both of them.
    When I remember how much better Disgaea games used to get with every single one, this just makes me sad. Even the ones that are not fan favourite, like 3 for example, had obvious improvements in them and iterated in some way, leading to future games being better. When the 4th game came out it was like a new world, and the 5th one was peak. Even D2, which was more like a fan service side-dish had a lot of things going for it. I was so excited for the future of the series and was sure that NIS had the formula down and knew exactly what they were doing with it, and now I am so disappointed because instead of growing better it regressed and is now seemingly unable to catch up to it's own shadow... I will enjoy Disgaea 7 as I did with any other, but the disappointment will remain. I just hope the move to 3D and the collateral damage it's causing won't sink this franchise completely.

    Your thumbnail tagline more or less sums up my feelings on the game.
    Having finished it recently, while I did somewhat enjoy my time with "7" for what it was, it still felt lacking overall to me. The more I think about it, the more negatives are coming to mind than positives. Though the main thing that surprised me was just how short the game was. I somehow managed to clear just about everything outside of beating Carnage Baal in a little over 40 hours casually. That's kind of absurdly short for the series, being on par with the very first game even.
    Though that could be due to how some of the tools you have access to, the hospital gacha especially, are so over-tuned in your favor that you can kind of end up just accidentally trivializing the majority of the game. Like, barely 7-8 hours in by the end of Chapter 5, I was already rocking full sets of Rank 38 equipment, basically the 2nd or 3rd highest tier stuff, with Legendary Exodus's to spare even. That's kind of nuts. Made short work of even the Martial Maps at that point.
    But hey, at least it's better than "6"...which isn't exactly that high of a bar in the first place.

    Yeah, the lack of on-the-map animations (and generally poor animation quality) is making me hesitant to try it. Going from 2D to full 3D always entails some growing pains for developers, but I was kinda hoping they'd have gotten through more of those by now.

    Until now (30 hours in) Disgaea 7 has the potential to be my third favourite Disgaea after 5 and 4. There are questionable omitions which I attribute to the team still adapting to the 3D environment (which does not excuse them at all, they should have taken their time). I especially do not like the animations, you are spot on there. I miss the group attacks as well and do not really like that characters would not group level up when attacking. However, tower attacks I never like and I question their usefulness for the series going forward.
    That being said, I love the flow. I stream the game twice a week and managed to sneak like 10 hours of pure grind in between the last 2 streams, just because it was too addicting and fun.
    Also, I love Pirilika until now.

  • @soulofalbedo

    I gotta say I think the series just lost its appeal after the move to 3d. I get that its cheaper for them to make than hand-drawn sprites but disgaea is a series carried by its charm, and that shift lost a lot of it. Not to mention it's a little crazy that a game that looks this unimpressive has such poor performance. 6 and this game's demo are noticeably less snappy in action selection and menus than the previous games as well.

    Thankfully It's better then 6, I mean you would have to try really hard to make a Disgaea game that's worse then 6(what a POS that was). But there's a bunch of little issues/dowgrades that keeps the from being really good, let alone great. The new bonus system should have been an addition to the top of the old bonus system, not a complete replacement(also tell us what we would get beforehand). I don't like the new item world change(bloody hell, so instead of having 100 floors, we need to constantly reincarnate the item, and now we need to spend insane amounts of mana on even more things sigh(it was already hard enough to get massive amounts of mana on anything other then your primary magic user/special char with a OPed AOE skill. We don't have the extra mana to now be spending on item upgrades in addition to all the usual mana uses). Also I don't care about the change to geo panel breaking, it seems to be a misguided attempt to simplify it/dumb it down or speed it up, It's not a good change.

    I've only played 5 6 and 7 so far, this one is the worst for me cause it wasn't really fun and was straight up tedious. The juice bar is basically useless for most the game. I dont know what they were thinking about the new auto battle feature, should have kept it how it was for 6 or just get rid of it completely. Reincarnation is basically useless too, does help out a little here and there but its not as helpful as it was for 6. This game seems like its more focused on the item world which isnt all that bad, just wished they brought back the sage and twin headed dragon, wouldn't make it alot more easier going through the item world since you can't use auto battle.

    If Disgaea 7 were released without 6 ever existing, it'd be a low point in the series, but a low point in the Disgaea series is still a great time. After 6, though, Disgaea 7 is a colossal relief. Its characters don't match my favorite (Disgaea 2) its story doesn't match what I consider the strongest story in the series (Disgaea 3), and it lacks the massive time to complete main story (Disgaea 5, I consider long play times a positive), but it moved everything back in the right direction after the catastrophe that was Disgaea 6.

  • @christianboi7690
    @christianboi7690 9 місяців тому

    Whats even the difference between monsters and humans now that monsters can throw?
    In Disgaea 1 and 2 monsters where the only unit that could be caught, so you could usually have a monster at or above your level at any point if you tried hard enough and it was a cool and interesting way to add a unit to your team.
    In Disgaea 2 they added evilities and monster units usually had really strong and interesting evilities and a few of them could even fly, helping a lot in the item world.
    In Disgaea 3 and 4 you could magichange monsters, giving you an easy and fun way to grind a monster up to snuff with your human units.
    Disgaea 4 added fusion which let monster units grind together and gave a strong boost to a monster units stats and abilities. Though now you can capture and add any unit and it has to be at your level or lower making the whole mechanic a little worse.
    Then I’m Disgaea 5 they made it so you could create a unit at your level, making capturing almost entirely obsolete on the front of adding allys. Fusion didn’t make a return. Unique evilities became transferable so some of them got nerfed, because you can’t have multiple OP evilities and there’s really no reason to use a character with sub-par abilities when there are like only 2 or 3 specific units worth having late game.
    Now, from what it sounds like, they took the only other meaningful differences from the start. Monster units don’t have their specific weapons and they don’t uniquely unlock all of their specials from levels as opposed to weapons.
    Makai kingdom and phantom brave already had no real difference between monster and human units, Disgaea was cool because it added that. There was this cool dichotomy where there’s a distinct difference between monster and human units and you could feel it. True, monster units weren’t the best in Disgaea 1, but they didn’t have to be and if you knew how to use the capture system they could add a bunch of level 9999 units to your team far before you’d generally be able to have them. Now there’s one less rewarding system.
    I think my main problem with new Disgaea games (since 5) is that there’s been this big focus on streamlining everything. I don’t want the statician collection process to be streamlined it was slow, but fun and rewarding. Now it’s just a simple, but necessary step that anyone has to take to get through the post game without dying of old age. It’s not rewarding if it’s expected of you and designed so that you don’t have to do much of anything to get it. I’d rather Disgaea 2 without staticians than Disgaea 5 where they basically give you max staticians and grinding to max level barely makes a dent in the post game grind.

    • @Kuhlgamer
      @Kuhlgamer 9 місяців тому +1

      as someone who never used monsters mostly because of the reasoning of "they cant throw like humans" i like this change. I know they could bounce characters but the geometry neccessary for me to get all the monsters in position for a tower throw was never smoothing i wanted so after a certain point i just never used them and it felt like a lot of the systems they added for monsters in the later games were only trying to make you use them despite the massive flexibility loss. Capturing monsters always felt kinda cheap too since why would i bother trying to level up a character at the start when i could just kidnap one. i did use that system tho for winning the netherworld senates etc with monster fusing but it always felt kinda bad this was how i had to do things sometimes just to pass simple bills

    • @christianboi7690
      @christianboi7690 9 місяців тому

      @@Kuhlgamer yay, passing bills in Disgaea 1 kind of sucked. I forgot to mention the monster throw system from Disgaea 2. I actually really liked that system. If you knew how to use it, it gave you a bunch of neat options. There was a dark world in Disgaea 2 where you had to throw someone from one side of the map to the other in one turn and it was only possible because 1.) monster throws could function an infinite number of times instead of own and 2.) monster throws don’t take up the monsters turn so they can return to the base panel afterwards. I thought it was a very interesting and versatile mechanic. Monsters could throw and attack enemies in the same turn. Of course versatility of movement in combat didn’t really seem as meaningful in Disgaea 6 because most of the levels didn’t have as many gimmicks or cool layouts to navigate.
      I thought it was a pretty cool and fun mechanic at least.
      Throwing enemies on top of each other isn’t what I meant by monster fusion, but whatever. I’d say that’s primarily a grinding mechanic. Disgaea 1 was the only game that kind of made it necessary unless you wanted to try passing the harder bills like 20 times by slowly giving items to the strongest monsters and getting lucky in the end.
      For grinding it’s pretty fun and with the way Disgaea 1 is balanced your able to beat the game with 0 grinding, not even item world, if you make use of the mechanic very carefully. I wouldn’t doubt you could do it with Disgaea 2 too. that’s something I liked about those games. If you knew what you where doing grinding wasn’t actually that bad and the way I work I want a certain level of grinding so knowing that by the time I accomplish on Eid my goals, like leveling up a characters staff experience and skill experience so that they can cast a 9x9 with a specific spell, I’ll be strong enough to face the next few challenges and get a few new goals to work out. Human and Monster units were definitely cemented in their separate functions and utilities, especially in Disgaea 4. I really don’t get your perspective. I suppose the fusion and magichange mechanics wouldn’t help with experience past Disgaea 6 because experience is applied to every team member that participated (I kind of hate that mechanic) and now the combat in the newer games is so one sided that having the versatility of a stronger unit that counts as two units in the newer games would be pointless because your either dominating or being dominated and there’s rarely ever any nuance in there to eek out a win against a much stronger opponent.
      I really don’t get your perspective. Monsters had so much utility and felt so distinct from human units in so many ways and it really doesn’t make sense that making all units the same could be seen as progress. If that’s really how you feel I’d be really interested in why you think the older mechanics didn’t really appeal to you. For me, I can’t help it. the older mechanics where peak Disgaea for the breadth and range of options in units and grinding and especially as it applied to monsters in D4.

    • @Kuhlgamer
      @Kuhlgamer 9 місяців тому

      @@christianboi7690 monsters had a lot more varied utility but early games they didn't have much per since you could only have 3-4 skills for a monster compared to humans that could use weapon skills and spells so the very minimum was 5 (6? I can't remember if they had a 6th weapon progression skill in D1) as well as magic classes with buffs and spells. Once they split phys and magic monster weapons it got better but maybe I was already cemented in to my not using monster ways , later games tried to make me do it but things like the magichange felt like more of a gimmick power boost that had a potentially crippling downside if you timed it wrong, and I don't honestly remember how well some of the monster only mechanics worked because again I didn't dive too much into a system I didn't use. From a GP perspective yea it's great they have differences that make them stand out but the not throwing things just seemed more of an annoying thing rather then something like the monster weapons and built in monster skills since it could severely limit how you deploy units on the map, you know some of the later maps esp post game sometimes required whole throw teams and if I had too many monsters leveled up I'm screwed, if I had enough time and resources it's be fine but a lot of the time I would only make 10+ ish characters since why would I level up a bunch of characters I'm not gonna use because of the map limitation. I don't begrudge someone using monsters and I'll be honest some of the monster only skills and magichange skills were strong and looked awesome (I did usually level up at least 1 of every class in the end game where I could do it in like 10 mins just to see all the skill animations) but when I thought about throwing being such a core mechanic that I could use to move around and get important characters where they needed to I just never really felt the need to pick up monsters since it would limit me in that way

      @@Kuhlgamer Monsters could also learn magic, though in the earlier games there were only a few monsters that primarily used magic. The fact that ghosts could recover MP was pretty useful for the item world though. I liked to magichange a ghost on a character to recover MP for a bit or just use a ghost as a mage. As for being able to throw units far across the map, having like 2 monster units with a lot of movement is really useful towards that goal, because you can start by throwing on a monster or two in a lot of situation, which would basically be a free throw because you could return the monster to the base panel and use it or another unit for whatever you wanted afterwards and given some monsters could fly, those units where especially useful for getting around. If distance is the issue then having a bunch of monsters lined up can get a ton of units wherever you want really easily and they can move before and after you throw with them to attack or line up for another throw, or whatever you want. I beat all of the post game for Disgaea 1, 2, 3 (I think), 4, 5, and 6(I’m pretty sure) and I don’t think there where many levels that actually required you to make use of all human teams. Disgaea 1 had an annoying map in Cave of Ordeal that required a couple rogues to beat. Disgaea 2 had a Cave of ordeal map that required a couple of far throwing human units too, but I remember using a monster because it could help units in the back of the line throw a unit farther and units in the front throw a unit father because I could throw someone on the monster unit, move the monster unit and do it again. So I could shuttle more people then before forwards when I needed a lot of people in one area. Then there was that level I mentioned earlier that required monster units. Disgaea 3 had a bunch of weird puzzles that were kind of annoying in the post game levels, but I can’t really remember. Disgaea 4 I don’t think had many or any situation where a monster couldn’t hold utility and Disgaea 5 I don’t really know. I kind of abused the full map AoE mechanics, so maybe I skipped some level that required it, but I don’t think there were many throwing puzzles there.
      I feel like you just never fully explored the functionality of monster units and that fine, I guess. I just appreciated the option, but now it’s gone. Also, if you played Disgaea 4 and you didn’t grind Draco then you missed out, because she’s overpowered and it would have been easy to grind her with magichange. Raspberyl is also a really power unit in Disgaea 4 post game. That’s like the main thing in Disgaea 4, because even if you weren’t keen on the monster units specific options in regards to skill unlocks, they unlocked all their skills through levels and you had a myriad of option to grind them up to snuff and reincarnate them all you like because they can still come in handy when magichanged even at level 1. I do think that dual-magichange was a bit too OP though, even though you get the option post game, on top of the dlc adding a character that let you have a second action. That made the strong bosses in the post game a bit too easy to cheese in some cases.

      @@christianboi7690 well it kinda sucks they lose part of their original design but again it felt more of a limitation then a positive feature to be worked around, i think it's a more positive change than a negative one since monster units still have their unique sides but they are now more flexible in execution. It feels like a QoL more than a change to flatten the differences between the monsters and human classes and make them more user friendly/less complicated. D6 seemed to make way too many simplified changes to appeal to a wider audience without adding any new depth or strategy and it backfired. I can see how you could say monsters throwing is the same idea but if it leads to someone like me using monsters when I normally wouldn't than I think it's a good change in this case. Literally I think the only monsters I used in the in early game were ones that came with the story like desco

    Wow, it's rare I run across a Disgaea review by someone who A) actually sounds like they've played the franchise before B) Can point out the bad without coming across whiny & miserable and the good without coming across fanboyish.

    The DLC roster for this game was a disappointment. They offered no obscure characters from other titles outside of Disgaea games. It was safe and boring.
