It might be that he take routhe far from your minimap detection. And reach there before you. This happened to me a lot of times. Even that, in one moment, is 1/2 on your side.

High speed on freeway so they were long out of vieuw
Do you remember out first exchange? I think it's exactly the same... taking a different route is sometimes too much for the minimap/game to handle.
