In the first RDR Dutch kind of seemed like a wild dog with no plan other than chaos. He's dirty, he kills innocent people, he's almost evil. But in the end, despite John walking out of a corridor of the cave Dutch talks to John a moment, throws his gun off a cliff, before throwing himself off. After playing RDR2 and seeing how clean and organized he used to be EVERYTHING in RDR hits differently. In my mind, the last scene with Dutch hits the hardest. He throws himself off a cliff, so John can go back to his family, in my mind at least. The Red Dead series is absolutely exquisite! Emotional highs and lows, near perfect gameplay for it own genre that it pretty much stands alone in, and characters that are not only fun to play and interact with but that can tug at your heartstrings and make you feel like you're a part of the story yourself. The series best not end here of Rockstar knows what's best for them. Next game, may I suggest multiple playable characters like int GTAV!
I don't think Dutch killed himself for John and his family. It's more likely that he just wanted to go on his own terms, since killing John was no longer an option. At the end, Dutch knew his death would not keep John and his family safe, because he knew that Ross and his men would have to find another monster to kill after they've dealt with him, and John was the most likely candidate for that.
Crazy how in rd2 Arthur was trying to help the Native American people and Dutch was trying to use them for his benefit and all those years later he was doing the same thing

Many ppl forget that Dutch is a criminal at heart and it can be assumed he was one pretty much his whole life. Dutch from the start of Red Dead 2 is shown to think his ideals exist over everyone else because of "corruption". Its the reason Hosea warned of not robbing the train, but Dutch saw it as something worth doing despite needing to lay low. Dutch justifies his actions by labeling them as a means to an end for some great goal. You can even see him do that in this video. Once his facade of a grand leader with a plan slips, his true colors show. He's a cold blooded egotistical killer who ultimatly never had a plan outside of causing mayham.

I've heard people say playing 1 after 2 is depressing but I think playing 2 after 1 really sets you up to feel like Arthur feels. At the beginning of the game Arthur already insinuates "We're all screwed and I've seen all my friends die" and us as the player, after playing 1, know that they're all screwed and that all Arthur's friends will die. Yet, like Arthur, we persist, hoping for a miracle and being involved and loving these people anyway even though we know deep down that it's all over.
i mean, he’s got a point tho. in my eyes, dutch always cared about the gang. he was a good man, fighting and robbing his way to provide for the gang. he started to lose his mind after the death of hosea and was manipulated by micah. whereas john only cared for himself. he didn’t think about how the other gang members felt, he only cared about the certainty of him living a peaceful life with his family. also when jack was born he didn’t know what to do so the first thing he did was run away for a few years. now, don’t get me wrong, john is a good person, but he is selfish.
I love how they switched roles: Dutch, the man with the plan, is now aimless on how he can lead his ppl. And John, previously scared of his responsibilities as a man of the family, is so desperately trying to finish the job to get back to them.
Thing is that, Micah didn’t make Dutch lose his mind, he even said to Arthur in chapter 1 ”I know you haven’t thought much of my ideas lately” then Dutch lost Sean, got a concussion during the trolley, losing his best friend (Hosea) and went more insane. Then Micah took the advantage of that and in American Venom Dutch shot Micah for 1 of 3 reasons, he realized he was played, he did it for Arthur, but most likely a rival for power

Its a tiny tiny detail, but a solid one. Shows john knows what he's doing, and not just some gun tooting hooligan.
It's also a nice little mirror to Dutch waving his pistol around with his finger on the trigger.

At the beginning of the game Arthur already insinuates "We're all screwed and I've seen all my friends die" and us as the player, after playing 1, know that they're all screwed and that all Arthur's friends will die. Yet, like Arthur, we persist, hoping for a miracle and being involved and loving these people anyway even though we know deep down that it's all over.
"I don't know sport". 5 seconds later "we're fighting for an idea".

I havent played rdr1 but after 2 long playthroughs of rdr2 watching this makes me see a totally broken Dutch, really impacts.

i mean, he’s got a point tho.
in my eyes, dutch always cared about the gang. he was a good man, fighting and robbing his way to provide for the gang. he started to lose his mind after the death of hosea and was manipulated by micah.
whereas john only cared for himself. he didn’t think about how the other gang members felt, he only cared about the certainty of him living a peaceful life with his family. also when jack was born he didn’t know what to do so the first thing he did was run away for a few years. now, don’t get me wrong, john is a good person, but he is selfish.
Hearing dutches gravity speech in red dead 2 before 1 just hits way harder expesidly with john saying that dutch always has a plan after
Poor Dutch, he was a man with honor. Now he's a man without reason. ( Remember RDR2 was a prequel to RDR.)
I love how they switched roles:
Dutch, the man with the plan, is now aimless on how he can lead his ppl.
And John, previously scared of his responsibilities as a man of the family, is so desperately trying to finish the job to get back to them.
This game is really different after playing rdr2. Damn I miss the old Dutch
Thing is that, Micah didn’t make Dutch lose his mind, he even said to Arthur in chapter 1 ”I know you haven’t thought much of my ideas lately” then Dutch lost Sean, got a concussion during the trolley, losing his best friend (Hosea) and went more insane. Then Micah took the advantage of that and in American Venom Dutch shot Micah for 1 of 3 reasons, he realized he was played, he did it for Arthur, but most likely a rival for power
The writing for both games were phenomenal
