Enjoyed this video! It was nice to see how you can make a less interesting hike more exciting, even on a cloudy day. Your bushwhack vid demonstrated the challenge of paying attention to both the branches at eye level and the footing. Looks like you enjoyed your hike.
Notice that Jon shot the bushwhacking video.😂 I usually have on eye protection on bushwhacks. If it’s particularly gnarly we wear long sleeves (even in the summer), long pants or gaiters, and work gloves. This particular whack I was more concerned with twisting a knee or ankle in a hole since the woods under the field were filled with moss and leaf covered rocks with large holes between them.
Nice views from the cabin to the open rock area with the large cairn. Wonder why it's not a marked as a view trail (especially since Cabot Mt doesn't have a view). Seems like a nice place for a sunrise and sunset if you’re staying in the cabin. Thanks for sharing.
Well, I can tell you that we couldn’t see a trail out to it (there was enough snow on the ground to make it impossible to tell where others had gone). It was pretty open at first, but as we approached it we had to push through some fairly thick growth. Perhaps there is an unofficial trail that would have avoided the thick conifers, especially if we had ended up right where the cairn is (about center on the field)…as it was, we came in right in the edge. Like I said, I’ll definitely revisit this in nicer weather (no snow), so we shall see!
The last time I climbed Cabot was from the now closed west approach on a windy day. Not too bad except for the fact that after we finished, we were driving down the dirt road and a tree had fallen across it blocking our way. We had to borrow a couple of axes from an elderly woman who must have thought of it as a very strange request. At least we chopped our way out and gave her an exit path too. I am fearful of the York Pond Road as a result but at least it is a more major route.

One of my fears is a fallen tree. We keep a saw in the car just in case.
That cabin saved me from a brutal October rain storm back in the 1999. I wonder if the scree field would be skiable? Thanks for taking us along.
I think it’s too short to ski for fun…I’m not a skier, though.
