Thanks again for the screenshot of your route and showing your route before starting out. I was able to follow your route on Gaia as you were hiking. I knew he passed away several years ago but didn’t know how. Just read an article in Outside magazine about him. How incredibly sad. He chose how he wanted to die, in the environment he loved and cared for so much. Take care.

We both have (or have used) Hoka Speedgoats, La Sportiva Bushido II, Adidas Terrex, and Altra Lone Peaks. For winter, I used men’s Salomon Tundras, but they’ve worn out. I have replaced them with Baffin Borealis, but haven’t used them yet. My personal favorite three-season shoe is La Sportiva Bushido II (I have a wide fore-foot and very high arch). I climbed Moosilaukee in the late 1970s. I took Gorge Brook but it was in a different location back then than it is now on the Ridge to the right. When did they close the old slide trail. I don't think it was there when I did that climb. I don't remember any slide. I was a VIP chauffeur for 8 years and one of my clients used to hire me to take him to the White Mountains with friends to go climbing. I would take short hikes while he did Moosilaukee or Garfield on another trip. I got to hang out at the Ravine Lodge building for about 6 hours one day. What a beautiful building. Great suggestion on the route map. We did a single day Presidential traverse in 2022, there’s a video up for it. Never did an actual Pemi loop. We did an “semi-Pemi” overnight going up Flume Slide Trail and coming out over the Twins with a side trip to Hale, and an overnight loop that went North Twin Trail and Firewarden’s Trail up Mt Hale. Lend-a-Hand and Twinway to Zealand and Guyot. Bondcliff Trail to Bondcliff, Bond, and West Bond. Bondcliff Trail and Twinway to South and North Twin. North Twin Trail back to the car. I definitely don’t have a single day Pemi loop in the legs. 😂

    On my only overnight backpacking trip in the mid 1990s, I went on Kendron Flume and stayed at Ethan Pond. Explored the Shoal Pond area in the rain but enjoyed every minute except for camping. It was a cold and wet night. Afterwards, we went up the Willey Ladders which were tricky then too with missing rungs and went out to Tom and back the way we came. Lots of memories. Gray Jays on Willey were fun. On Field, there was another group taking a group photo with a camera on a timer sitting on a tall stump. Just a second before the timer went off, a gray jay landed next to the camera and everybody panicked. I have always wanted to see that photo and the expressions on the faces. I actually met someone who would become my girlfriend years later on the trail between Field and Tom. It did not work in the long term but we climbed Zealand together and she was just a few mountains short of the NH 4,000 footers. I also learned postholing on Field one mid May one year in deep soft snow. That range has been good to me. Your videos are very meaningful to me. So many adventures which bring back my stories. Best days of my life have been in the White Mountains. My Dad took us down the Kancamaugus Highway shortly after it was opened around 1960 or so. Loved the mountains every since. We drove through Crawford Notch as they were rebuilding and widening the road through there about the same year. It was all dirt and oiled. Thank you.

      Love all your videos. You show so many interesting places and each one is a treasure that I enjoy. I like seeing the trail itself and you are always going to places that I would like to see again and I see how places have changed in the last 25 to 30 years. Some of the changes are dramatic like the top of Field and Tom. And I love the bushwhack videos in the way out of the standard places. I wish that I could do what you do as it brings back so many pleasant memories. My best days were days spent out in the mountains. Even in my best hiking years (the 1990s) I could never do some of the routes that you have done. The Great Gulf Wilderness videos are awesome! I never ever hiked in there. This is one of my favorites of all your videos. You just get view after view of directions and perspectives not commonly seen. How amazing it is that you can traverse this immense section of some of the hardest slopes. And camp! So fun. When I read the old books, I wonder, "how could they just walk off and get lost and come down the totally wrong side of the mountain???" But when you see this it is easier to understand because there are so many sides to the mountains.

    Yesterday was an absolute gem to tackle this formidable mission. Went up Osseo instead… thankfully it was quick to find the north prong, introduced my buddy to his first bushwhack and he loved all the type II fun involved! I am studying West Bond slide intel in preparation of an Oct trip up into Hellgate Ravine, debating whether to go Guitar, one of the “Monsters” or try out the newest rightmost slide that seemingly reaches all the way down into the ravine. Was on West Bond when I added it to a recent Firewarden’s Loop and met two bushwhackers emerging from that newest slide, seems quite tempting…

    • @laurasoule2771

      That rightmost slide is VERY tempting. I think we’ll give it a go this fall or next year. Guitar slide was fun. I really enjoyed coming up the other side of West Bond from the Bear Pond side. The slide on that side was easy rock hopping (like the northern Presidentials) and the woods before it was very open. I have videos for both up; search “Laura Soule guitar slide” or “Laura Soule bear pond” if you want to check it out. Have fun! Glad you enjoyed Lincoln Slide. Cedar Brook slide on the Hancocks is similar in feel (good to descend) and you can loop it with a climb up Arrow slide for double the fun.

      I believe that you can drive right into site 4 (a lean-to). If you look at the map on the BSP website, you’ll see that the “road” goes there. They put light dashed lines outlining the areas where cars can go. The dark dashed line is the Appalachian Trail and it goes right down the road for cars. You can see the bump out on the left for site 21 parking and then a larger bump on the left for day hiker parking. Similarly, there is a turn to the right to access sites 4-8. Hope this helps! Loved your video! What a great day for the Tripyramids. I have been anxious about doing the North Slide. Many of the comments on the internet make it sound very challenging. From your video it seems like the first part of the slide is the most challenging. I'm going to have to be on the lookout for several days with dry weather and with no dew to make the slabs slippery. You sure hit it right. Thanks for the video!!!

    • @laurasoule2771
      @laurasoule2771 26 днів тому

      I would add that you should wear the grippiest shoes that you have. First time up I wore Salomon light hikers and the grip was TERRIBLE. If you get into trouble for some reason, head to the left. You’ll be able to grab trees to get yourself around the tough parts. We were fortunate today that it was exceptionally dry. I really think that climbing the north slide is actually easier than descending the south slide. Just take your time to look ahead and pick where you want to go, take your time, and don’t forget to turn around occasionally and enjoy the view. Descending south is just a matter of going slowly and picking your steps. It’s easy to step on small, slippery gravel on the south slide. Aim for larger rocks. The thing to remember on both slides is that even if you should slip or fall, it won’t be a catastrophic fall.

    Only went up North Slide once on a hot and humid day. The rocks were even sweating. People above me would occasionally loosen rocks that would bounce down on me. I missed the turn to the left at the cairn to enter the woods near the top of the slide. I tried to bushwhack unsuccessfully from there to the summit. I had to turn around as it was so thick there. The rest of the trip was uneventful but I was so exhausted that I could barely eat any supper. I decided to go in from the Kanc the next time that I did the Tripyramids. That North Slide was tough under those conditions.

    • @laurasoule2771
      @laurasoule2771 26 днів тому

      Sounds like an “adventure” for sure. Rocks rolling down on me (or me kicking some loose on someone else) is a big fear of mine. Luckily, we haven’t seen anyone else on the slides at the same time as us for the last several times…that’s the bonus of hiking midweek. Any dampness on the slide (especially near the bottom) increases the difficulty exponentially, even just evening dew. The bushwhack today wasn’t too thick at all, but there was a definite herd path, so much different from when you did it. The turn off into the woods is non-intuitive, so it’s easy to mistakenly keep heading up the slide.

    Interesting to see this next level of exploring and great work filming while you were doing it. In the AMC 60 best day hikes book there is an essay about Randolph House and how the early trail builders would hang out there and talk about their work. The author talked about Laban Watson, who was known for building steep trails straight up the mountain, in comparison to Edmonds, who built trails that were easier on hikers and imagined that there may have been some interesting conversations between the two men. So I wonder if Watson built the Adams slide trail.

      I found a blog post stating that it was cut by Warren Hart in 1909. He and Laban Watson must have been cut from the same cloth!😂

    Wow! You had an amazing hike. The views were spectacular, the sky cobalt blue, the sunrise spectacular and the waterfalls were wonderful. Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us.

    Left my pack once. No problems that time with critters. I have more in my backyard than the White Mountains. I answered my question. Old Adams Slide Trail was closed in 1971. Adams, I consider, to be the hardest of the 48 peaks. It beat me once. You took it to an entirely other level with the Adams Slide. Thank you for filming this. I saw an old video but this is current. Impressive!

      We’ve never had any issues leaving our packs, either. Jon believes that as long as it’s not someplace like a campsite or leanto where critters are accustomed to people then we shouldn’t have a problem. And you’re 100% right that there are far fewer critters in the woods…they’re all in my yard!

    Great video once again. One of these days I need to visit the RMC cabins/shelters/huts. Have fun out there!

    Always wondered how you get to the RMC cabins that you can see from the trail going from Madison hut to Adams. Is there a fee to pay to park where you did? Can you park there overnight? Like those lunch time-laps videos you take. Thanks for sharing!

    • @laurasoule2771
      @laurasoule2771 Місяць тому

      There was no fee currently (I think there used to be a small fee back when the store was still open). Plenty of cars park overnight there since it’s the main parking for the RMC camps. The trailhead sign even directs you to park at the store. Just make sure to park to the right of the store on the gravel lot.

    Great day for it today guys! There are a lot of trails up there for sure. Never been on Lowe’s Path but may try to do it this weekend if the weather cooperates. Contemplating this way or maybe Caps Ridge to Jefferson which will be #18 on the 4K footers for me. This actually looks more interesting but not as direct. Glad you guys had a great day. Wish I could’ve been out there too but ya know, the work thing again. 🙄 Take care and as always, be safe out there!👍🏻🙂

      Work really gets in the way! I personally love Caps Ridge and feel like you should do it at least once. It makes for a pretty short day, though. If you want a truly awesome, longer hike you could go up Castle Ravine and down Castle. It’s about 9.6 miles (some of them quite slow). It’s much less travelled and you get everything (waterfalls, water crossings [many], climbing a headwall, views coming down Castle, and lots of lovely woods). I have a video from that route up if you do a search. Have a great time whatever you decide to do!

    Did that trail a week back and was the only one on it. Only saw a few folks coming up the other way (meeting at that intersection .2 from the summit) and at the summit coming from Owl’s Head. Quick hike, a little overgrown at time. Will have to come up and go over to Owl’s Head (didn’t have time).

      Owls Head is definitely worth visiting. Stellar views of the Presidentials, and plenty of space to sit and enjoy them. Martha’s Mile is a beautiful trail…Owl’s Head Trail is very steep (a slide area, so quite steep).

    I was always curious about Raymond Cataract. I had read that people would bushwhack there and you did it. Interesting in that it never became a Ravine like Huntington and Tuckerman. The flat areas above those ravines provided lots of wind blown snow that would accumulate in the Ravine and produce glaciers that carved out the cirques. The summit of Mount Washington protected Raymond Cataract from that action. Think of it as what Huntington and Tuckerman originally looked like - V shaped instead of U shaped. The last time I climbed Mount Washington in 2003, I went down Boott Spur on a beautiful mid-September day. No wind and shirt sleeve weather! Loved the views from up there. Worth the detour.

      Thanks for the geology lesson. Very interesting! I’ve found that Boott Spur is always a worthwhile detour as long as conditions above tree line are good. It’s lovely!

    Interesting and fun hike today. George’s Gorge trail is named for George Hamilton who was huts manager in the 60s. Crew members used to call him gorgeous George so it’s a play on words.
