Since you are my guru in all things White Mountains I hope you won't mind me asking you for a bit off-topic advice. I am working down my list of the 48 (29 as of now) but have only done one peak in winter. I plan on coming up to the mountains for a day trip this weekend and am trying to decide between the Tripyramids and Carrigain. Thoughts? Oh, and as always, thanks for taking me along on your hike today! :)
Sorry to see this so late! Tripyramids completely depend on whether you want to do the slides. If you don’t want the slides (or specifically North Slide), then there are several options. Carrigain involves the road walk as Sawyer River Road is closed and might not open again for a long time (hopefully some time next summer). Carrigain is very straight forward and with the road walk is 13.5-14 miles (so pretty long, but around 4 miles of that is the roadwalk). It is also mostly protected, which is good if it’s windy. Great views along Signal Ridge and from the summit tower. Tripyramids can be pretty boring unless you do the slides. If you want more specific route information on the Tripyramids, let me know. Pine Bend Brook is the traditional winter route (quite steep in a few places). Sabbaday Brook from the Kanc is an option (quite steep at the top). I’m partial to a loop with Scaur Trail and South Slide…easier if you go up South Slide and down Scaur. Just remember to turn around in the slide to get some views. Parking for that is at the Livermore South trailhead in Waterville Valley. Don’t mistakenly go to the Livermore North trailhead on the Kanc. That would be a long, somewhat tedious day. I know someone just did North Slide yesterday, so it isn’t too icy (apparently)…
@@laurasoule2771 Thanks so much for the detailed answer. I hadn't thought about doing the Tripyramids other than up North Slides and down South Slide, but based on your suggestion I'll do the South Slide & Scaur version on Sunday.
Hi Laura. What a great suggestion! Scaur was such a pleasant descent! Afternoon sun coming through the trees, trail all covered with leaves. Glorious! And great views of the North Slide... Thanks again!
What a gorgeous day up there! Thanks for sharing the hike. Gotta love those mountains!
I call that little knob on the ridgeline Adams 4, although I think I saw a reference once where they called it Abigail Adams.
