A problem I have with the Retropie is that the shutdown function is not well placed, So I had created a Python script to shutdown the system properly by holding a single button plugged on GPIO for two seconds (added the delay because I had turned off by accident a lot). Basic Instructions and script bellow. Were is what to do: 1° copy the script into a text file, and put the name as shutdown_button.py. 2° copy the file to the SD card 3° enter the terminal on the raspberry pi (is easy to find how) 4° make the file executable (chmod +x on terminal) 5° make the script auto run on startup (again look on the web, is simple, specially if you use the cron) 6° install a physical button on the GPIO pin you had configure to shutdown Script: import RPi.GPIO as GPIO import os import timegpio_pin_number=7 #pin number for the button GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BCM) GPIO.setup(gpio_pin_number, GPIO.IN, pull_up_down=GPIO.PUD_UP)try: while True: GPIO.wait_for_edge(gpio_pin_number, GPIO.FALLING) time.sleep(2) if GPIO.input(gpio_pin_number) == 0: break os.system("sudo shutdown -h now") except: passGPIO.cleanup()
Great video! I found that the part that took the longest for me was gathering all of the metadata for the ROMS. Once you do that and add some themes, you can make it look really slick!
Many thanks for doing this video. I’ve been meaning to get into Raspberry Pi for quite a while but never got around to it. After watching your video, I ordered a starter kit and have been playing with it all evening-having a BLAST! Thanks for the inspiration! 👍👍👍
The flat copper heatsink that you called a badge is actually the heat sink for the memory of the Raspberry Pi on the bottom. I've gotten a couple of those for Pi Zeros for smaller projects.
The caveat with the Pi and Retropie is that they do have a lot of input lag compared to the Nintendo minis. EDIT: If you go for the Pi for PS and N64 emulation you definitely should go for the 3B+ (PLUS). It's clock speed is 200MHz higher than on the 3B. For N64 you'll need every MHz you can possibly get.
No. Didn't mess around with that since i got my SNES classic which was already hacked to install games from other systems. My Pi is only serving as Teamspeak server and NAS atm. I'll give it a try.
First off if you want solid N64 emulation with an SBC get an Odroid XU4. Secondly I am willing to bet the half dozen Pi 3 baords I have that if you try to use the anti lag feature for N64 on a B+ it will barf pretty damned quick. Raspberry boards don't have the grunt.
Vegito Charmara I've done my research. From what I've found, it's the way the pi handles inputs. There's input lag via Bluetooth, and via wired connection. I don't see it improving to be on par with how responsive it is on the SNES classic. If you want to play anything that requires precision, you're probably better off playing with a wired controller on PC, or SNES classic. Otherwise, have fun playing beat em ups on your pi, because that's about the only thing that's really playable.
I built mine into a broken NES case, so the power supply, Pie, and USB HDD are all in it. Also the original WII can be hacked to emulate and load off of a SD card and then you have wireless controllers easily. But I think the pie is so much fun to mess with. Also many of the consoles will require the original BIOS of the console to run.
Awesome vid mate thanks, i would love to see some more vids on the Raspberry as im currently studying web penetration and i heard that you can use the Raspberry as a pretty ok tool for some stuff. Love how you explain things, keep it up!

Lycon Xero If you haven't heard of the GPD XD and it's successor GPD XD+, it does everything you're looking for, however without the caveat of construction. The (GPD XD+) system comes with the latest version of Android, which allows for GBA, PS1, SNES, NES, N64, SEGA Genesis - Saturn and it can even play Dreamcast games depending on how you set it up. The best part of it all is that it's portable! I'd highly recommend you do some more research on it, based on what you've said it seems you'd be pretty interested in it.
Thanks for the recommendation! I wonder if Spawnwave knows about this? The idea seems interesting even if the execution isn't quite all the way there yet. From the reviews I've seen, the hardware itself is on point but the Android OS it ships with is lacking. I'm sure someone will figure out how to hack it and load something better on it if they haven't already.
Yep, I'm a bit shocked myself Spawn hasn't ever gotten to reviewing it or at least doing an overview of sorts. On the subject of custom firmware, the original GPD XD has what's called Legacy ROM. I'm sure the firmware gives the user all sorts of other permissions, however that isn't my expertise. It has a wide range of uses, from video streaming, a music player, social media usage and anything your other smart devices offer. On top of that it's possible to key on screen buttons to the physical buttons on the system itself, which as far as I'm concerned is a huge plus. Also for as bad as people make it, the Play Store has some great games, that more often than not are hindered by their on screen controls, either by design or unresponsiveness, however the GPD XD fixes those issues (at least in the most effective way we've seen so far.) look into something like a freeplay CM3 or Freeplay Zero, basically shoves a raspberry pi into a GBA shell. Portable emulation machine. :D There is also the PiGrrl/Piboy same Idea, but in an original Gameboy shell. Both types are portable battery powered devices, can drop back out of emulation station into a linux desktop if wanted, to run a web browser or video player or somthing. or could just be a killjoy and use a phone lol. :D
When buying R.PI try to buy it from the official site/provider. There is a lot of rip-offs that look and work like a R.PI but after a while you'll see that you got scammed.
I have a Raspberry Pi 3 with Recalbox, a NES Mini and a SNES Mini. The lag on the Pi is so bad, it makes MegaMan unplayable, Donky Kong Country is just ok. I don't use it anymore.
RPi 3 doesn't support above 1080p unfortunately. I'm hoping the RPi 4 will get the features proposed to RPi Foundation. ARMv8 64-bit enabled Dual Core A72 2.0Ghz, Quad Core A53 1.6Ghz BIG.little config, 2GB DDR4 RAM, (2) USB 3.0, (2) USB 2.0, true 1GB Ethernet (non shared host), 4K60 HDMI 2.0b, Quad Core GPU, 2.4/5.8Ghz 801.11ac WiFi, Optional eMMC, Either barrel Jack or USB C for power. Price should easily be able to remain at $35 or no more than $40. For those that don't know the CPU in the RPi 3 B & B+ are the exact same chip, the B+ has been overclocked 200Mhz & a heat spreader added. The 1GB Ethernet is still using the shared USB 2.0 BUS which caps it to 300MB (still 3 X faster than the 100MB B model).
Overpriced. You can find all that on Aliexpress: Pi is $35(if you got the snes case, why did you get the pi with the case???) Power adapter is $3-5 Sd $10-14(could get even the cheaper one, and no need for usb stick) Case is $20 Hdmi $1-2 Controller $5 Everything for around $75...maybe even less.
If Nintendo gave a cheap about ppl playing roms they would have said something years ago so to say don't play if you don't own the game is pointless until Nintendo says something
Josiah Suarez it really depends on what u are playing, like the original Xbox doesn't have a really good emulator and the Saturn too. So it really depends on what u want to play
I added 75 games to my SNES Classic. I rather the limited storage. I noticed with the Ras pi I never played to much because I had a selection of over 11000 games. Having 96 games. I play it more. Hopefully I can get the NES classic next month.
Aidán G. I can run Kirby 64 perfectly fine on my SNES Classic. If it can do an N64 game, you can play a PS1 game. Not to mention that it has enough space for Paper Mario 64, which is an N64 RPG.
I was trying to understand this video. But you are talking a bit too fast. And you aren't showing me exactly what to do during the sd card and usb drive part. Lol
Where you can buy the snes classic mini? I actually don't see it anymore in webshops where it was, and from ebay I fear of buying it because every seller is chinese, arrives in 2 months and you just don't know ifit is indeed snes or just a fucking NES 8bit knockoff...
I mean... if you have a PC to do this with just emulate on that... If it can't even emulate N64 and PS1 at full speed and fullscreen then I really don't see a point. And even the most potato of a PC can emulate NES and SNES lol.
thanks for wasting my time this was looking so promising to you sided the skip the install part and where they get the software from would be nice actually someone did from step 1 to the end a full in-depth video would have been nice :'(

The 1GB Ethernet is still using the shared USB 2.0 BUS which caps it to 300MB (still 3 X faster than the 100MB B model).
Nice,
Does this have games wit it?
No ??
Overpriced.
You can find all that on Aliexpress:
Pi is $35(if you got the snes case, why did you get the pi with the case???)
Power adapter is $3-5
Sd $10-14(could get even the cheaper one, and no need for usb stick)
Case is $20
Hdmi $1-2
Controller $5
Everything for around $75...maybe even less.
N64 Banjo Kazooie runs great in the intro like he showed, but is garbage in game play. No terrain, just running around in a blank white purgatory.
If Nintendo gave a cheap about ppl playing roms they would have said something years ago so to say don't play if you don't own the game is pointless until Nintendo says something
I don’t under Stand how to get it to flash
Use etcher or windows32 disk imager and to flash it to the sd card
man emulators are free and offer ~100% compatibility
Josiah Suarez it really depends on what u are playing, like the original Xbox doesn't have a really good emulator and the Saturn too. So it really depends on what u want to play
Raspberry pi isnt a emulator so what exactly are you commenting about??
nice how ever i wont put in Raspberry in my SNES Classic
you're not taking out the SNES classic, its a separate case lol
I'll stick with Emulators over spending $60 - $300 For these Mini's.
The minis are emulators...
What about game cube
Jon's beard is weird in this video.
More full than usual.
His name isn't Jon anymore... it's AAA.
I have the small sega retro and its a pos it doesn't even have hdmi only av
“A lot more games” You can hack your SNES Classic pretty easily.
With limited storage.
Aidán G. You can also do that with the SNES Classic via hacking.
the pi is much more powerful than the sce
I added 75 games to my SNES Classic. I rather the limited storage. I noticed with the Ras pi I never played to much because I had a selection of over 11000 games. Having 96 games. I play it more. Hopefully I can get the NES classic next month.
Aidán G. I can run Kirby 64 perfectly fine on my SNES Classic. If it can do an N64 game, you can play a PS1 game. Not to mention that it has enough space for Paper Mario 64, which is an N64 RPG.
Read all comments :D
Nintendo Genesis??
Ds games?
I was trying to understand this video. But you are talking a bit too fast. And you aren't showing me exactly what to do during the sd card and usb drive part. Lol
Element 14? What the Heck!
Where you can buy the snes classic mini? I actually don't see it anymore in webshops where it was, and from ebay I fear of buying it because every seller is chinese, arrives in 2 months and you just don't know ifit is indeed snes or just a fucking NES 8bit knockoff...
Can anyone tell me where I can get the games
08:17 you have kids?
Long fingernails?
kapa
Prefiero mi Xbox Clasico
Don’t understand
I mean... if you have a PC to do this with just emulate on that... If it can't even emulate N64 and PS1 at full speed and fullscreen then I really don't see a point. And even the most potato of a PC can emulate NES and SNES lol.
Jxudo the most potato of a PC also doesn't have that small of a form factor or cost under $40 for the complete system.
downphoenix But you still need a pc to do this... lol
the European version the snes classic is better looking
thanks for wasting my time this was looking so promising to you sided the skip the install part and where they get the software from would be nice actually someone did from step 1 to the end a full in-depth video would have been nice :'(
