Yeah, I don't know how these things aren't exploding in popularity, they're literally the best thing for the average consumer. Retro gamers won't need a beefy computer to do everything they need. Or a computer to begin with, just access to one for like 10 minutes. Schools won't need to waste thousands of dollars by equipping their media rooms with shit overpriced computers. Tech illiterate older people won't get flabergastered by a complete OS with too many things to worry about. Non Tech intensive people won't be wasting 500-700 bucks on a full fledged laptop to write their documents, do their excels or browse facebook. These things are a godlike media center. You can set one up with cheap parts under 100 bucks excluding monitor, which if you have a smaller, less used TV, then you don't need one. They're portable. They're highly customizable with the extra add-on sticks. *_And they are really, really freaking dirt cheap_*
Fulken the raspberry pi 3 is neat, but for me personally doing graphic design the programs these days are very resource intensive. I dunno if thus could handle today's adobe programs. Great for everything else though.
Yeah but graphic designer workstations aren't exactly "average consumer" things. That's a _workstation._ You wouldn't try to edit and render 1080p video on a pi xD Adobe is the same thing...
The raspberry pi 3 kinda sucks for usability right out of the box, for those who wants to turn their pi3 into a nice desktop replacement I would suggest doing this in the cmd, type ¨sudo nano /boot/config.txt¨(make a backup first) This will open the config file for your boot options In this file scroll down to find the arm_freq settings. Delete (copy paste somewhere else first in case you want to revert back)and add these lines ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default total_mem=1024 gpu_mem=256 arm_freq=1400 sdram_freq=570 sdram_schmoo=0x02000020 over_voltage=6 sdram_over_voltage=2 core_freq=530 gpu_freq=530 initial_turbo=1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frees up 16mb of ram Allocates 256mb to gpu memory Overclocks cpu to 1.4ghz Overclocks ram speed to 570mhz Makes ram more stable Supplies the cpu with more power Supplies ram with more power Overclocks gpu Recommended the same as corefreq If you want to run the cpu at 100% maximum and dont care VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY then add Force_turbo=1 F3 to write changes, enter to save, ctrl x to exit reboot then check your cpu speed with the command ¨lscpu¨ I have a case with heatsinks and fan and my temps dont exceed 55celcius under extreme use. There is a youtuber on here named etaprime, he talks about how to set up netflix to work and does overclocking tutorials, he has different settings for his, I recommend my settings for better performance.
For me the Pi 3B is pure retro gaming heaven. I've got all the 8 and 16 bit consoles , Playstation 1, arcade games (Street Fighter 3!), msdos, even N64! The possibilities are endless! You can even add scanlines for that classic retro look.
I started with the raspberry pi 2, but love my 3. So glad they added built in WiFi and Bluetooth. Got the zero as well, which I got on sale for $1! I've mainly used it in robotics experiments, and it works great for it. I'm thinking my next project for it will be home automation/security.
Just bought a NESPi case, a 8bitdo Pro Controller and a Raspberry Pi. I'm going to make a "NES classic" for a friend's birthday. My 12-year-old self is mind blown that we can do things like this so easily now. Thanks for the video, very easy-to-follow, very informative.
I've always been curious, and quite honestly have wanted to get involved in the retro-pie scene. I appreciate your approach to the device, and the information you've provided makes the set up process far less intimidating than I originally believed. Great vid. And the links provided are a plus. 👾
The Raspberry Pi 3 is (just about) powerful enough to be used as a desktop computer for light use - I love mine! This is helped significantly by the built in H.264 (MP4) hardware decoder chip which enables playing videos up to 1080p/30; a feat which normally requires a far more powerful CPU. It also has a built in H.264 video ENCODER, meaning it's perfect for transcoding, broadcasting, or streaming video/CCTV around your house and beyond! It's also capable of MPEG2 (DVD) and VC-1 (WMV) video decoding, but those two require payment of a small license fee to enable (
I'll debate on a CRT TV, and turning one into an arcade machine seems simple with all the parts you can get, especially cheaper than getting a pre built MAME cabinet.
I want one with a 15khz RGB SCART out purely for the MAME / FBA / CPS-1/2 Arcade game emulation on a CRT...but having to fuck around with finicky resolution settings everytime I switch a game puts me off. I could barely stand Arcade emulation using the Wii for this reason.
i'm surprised it took you soo long to talk about this. it an incredible mini computer and very flexible. I love mine. I have one as retro game console and another one I experiment with by attaching a touch screen and have an android os on it. lots of applications and things you can use it for. ALSO if your using one with retropie you need the heat sink! especially when using the playstation emulator. it will get hot even if not over clocked.
My heatsink couldn't get rid of its heat by itself so I needed a fan as well. I went from 70 degrees celcius to 50. It ran hot especially during SMW2 Yoshi's island.
how do you shut it down properly mine corrupts my SD card every 2 or 3 boots, somwtimes after 1 reboot and sometmes on 1st boot , this thing is just awful no matter what kind of SD card i use it gets corrupted and constantly needs to be reburned ,i am going to sell it and look into a board that has an EMMC ,booting from SD is a really shit idea also i use win32 disk imager , so does this etcher also have a tool to easily delete the hidden boot partitions ans reformat the card like new having to go tot he cmd prompt to and manually enter commands to wipe the partitions from the card all the time is a real pain in the ass
Fun Fact the trailer company I work for uses raspberry pi for all their computers on the floor to clock in/out and access blueprint files its really cool to see these in a more industrial use
Im hoping support for the Asus Tinkerboard picks up. Its has good upgrades over the Pi3 and once the Tinkerboard gets some support maybe they will look at releasing the Pi4 to keep their product on top. Otherwise I hear it wont be released until 2019
I built a Retropie a few weeks ago. Popped a 64gb sd in there, and loaded it up with a ton of retro gaming goodness. So much fun! Just know that certain emulators don't run well, such as N64 and Jaguar. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, and can't seem to find a good solution to get those running well. Everything else works fine (NES, SNES, GB, GBA, GBC, Sega Master System, Genesis, SG-1000, TG16, NeoGeo, etc)
It's definitely using its hardware h264 decoder for that 1080p youtube video. Also I use a picoUPS (and a 12v to 5v step down) for running this off of your average SLA battery.
Add an HDMI male to male adapter and you can pretty much have a portable mini os you can plug into any tv/monitor, not sure how you'll control it though
Thanks for the video. The price of this even if you have to buy a controller is about half that of some of the pre fab retro pie systems out there. I think people are turned off from the raspberry pie because it is just a bare board and needs set up. But this video shows it is not that hard.
I highly recommend the pi 3b for gaming on a budget if only for Pokemon gen 1-3 and and SNES games. My nephews (5 and 7 yo) are loving Super Mario World, my mom can play too and my sister doesn't have to worry about them playing a game with toxic players or shell out $300 bucks for a console the boys would probably break
I personally love the raspberry pi 3. I had it for a while now and I currently use it for PS1 games. The only bad experience that I had was the the pi would sometimes freeze while I'm playing a PS1 game. has anyone else experienced this?
bought one waiting till it arrives but when i see ur video i'm thinking about buying one more one to use as a pc and one to use as a game device thanks❤️

Fulken yeah, but imagine if they did come with one that could handle those types of task. that would be awesome, expensive, but awesome lol
That would defeat the whole point of the Pi series......
Fulken yeah lol you're right
It has more ports than the MacBook. Apple, take notes.
technological reinovations it will

Daniel Riley whoa! A one dollar pi zero? I mean the original price is still dirt cheap but nice!
Daniel Riley can you use a wireless connector for wifi on the 3b

REEE ITS PI NOT PIE U LOSER TRIGGERED1!11!
your videos are my favourite thing to watch on my lunch break at work ❤️
Go ask Linus.

This is defiantly the best instructional video I have seen on the Raspberry Pi. All the others I've seen are harder to follow. Thank you Spawn Wave!
I've been wanting to toy with the idea of turning one of these into an emulation machine.
Phat John!
Hey spawnwave! My dad just got me a raspberry pi 3 (model B) for Christmas and I am super excited! Great video!
I learned UNIX in college 20 years ago ... love the Raspberry Pi
i'm surprised it took you soo long to talk about this. it an incredible mini computer and very flexible. I love mine. I use a Flirc case for mine, the entire case is one large heat sink =D.
how do you go about adding the android os to linux? or would you install the android os on an sd card instead of the linux sd???
Josh Bresnick Correct
My heatsink couldn't get rid of its heat by itself so I needed a fan as well. I went from 70 degrees celcius to 50. It ran hot especially during SMW2 Yoshi's island.
how do you shut it down properly
mine corrupts my SD card every 2 or 3 boots, somwtimes after 1 reboot and sometmes on 1st boot , this thing is just awful no matter what kind of SD card i use it gets corrupted and constantly needs to be reburned ,i am going to sell it and look into a board that has an EMMC ,booting from SD is a really shit idea
also i use win32 disk imager , so does this etcher also have a tool to easily delete the hidden boot partitions ans reformat the card like new having to go tot he cmd prompt to and manually enter commands to wipe the partitions from the card all the time is a real pain in the ass
Fun Fact the trailer company I work for uses raspberry pi for all their computers on the floor to clock in/out and access blueprint files its really cool to see these in a more industrial use
I just bought one of these. I'll be using it to play retro games and as a computer.
I'm gonna get one and 3D print a NES shaped case on my 3D printer and I will emulate old Nintendo games
MaxC25 they sell nes and supernes covers on amazon. Some with built in fans
Your vids always pop up for me these days, guess I leave a subscription to ya as those seem well made also!
This is such an awesome video! You are quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-camrs, I appreciate your content! Thanks man :)
I actually have mine coming in the mail tomorrow! Great video and it was very helpful for what I will have to do.
Got my Pi 4B 4GB board, just waiting on the rest to arrive, nice aluminum case with twin fans, mini wireless keyboard etc...Emulators are waiting
hey man I looove your videos! would you consider doing a video series with a rasp pi mini project?
this thing has stolen my heart :D
Yooo! It’s that dude from TS2!!! I loved his part in that movie!
Philly represent. ... Im subscribing. You checked off all my questions.
I am buying one of these instead of a Super Nintedo Classic because of Nintendo's crappy business practices.
I'm getting the GPD XD instead of either of these.
My co worker told me about this. This pretty incredible!!
I absolutely love stuff like this. I like to resurrect crappy computers with dsl or something like that too
Raspberry pi 4 was just release today 👌
do a test for play 3do game on retropie bro. look lag or not!
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to put this up.
I'm so glad you did this I was really considering doing this and you just convicted me.
The Pi is the only retrogaming console I'll ever need.
Thanks for the info, I will probably look into purchasing one of these after I do more research.
You have my vote just for being my Philly Fan Brother! Nice vid, thanks!
Yeah, I really need to get around to buying and setting one of these up.
Wow this is insane how have I not heard of this
I'm just saying I like the jerseys in the background
okay.
Did you also like losing to the Chiefs? 😂
Eagles can win the Super bowl!
Walter Danker What can you say now? #FlyEaglesFly
Much better video than your latest gamestop series ....you were cool once upon a time what happened?
the pi3 is very interesting.
but i realy hope the pi4 will come with 2Gb of RAM
Im hoping support for the Asus Tinkerboard picks up. Its has good upgrades over the Pi3 and once the Tinkerboard gets some support maybe they will look at releasing the Pi4 to keep their product on top. Otherwise I hear it wont be released until 2019
the Ram is not help to much for play game. the procesor much higher.
It comes with 4GB RAM actually.
@@ihavenoreasontobehere.1782
Well actually there 3 versions of it
1st is 1gb ram
2nd 2gb ram
3rd is 4gb ram
@@PracarYT and 2gb version costs same as 1gb
Shane Victorino, Donovan McNabb, and Westbrook. Nice!
Thank you john for the very nice and simple explained review :)
Hi Spawn, try berryboot to have retropie, raspbian and kodi multi boot in the same sd for example
Thx for the tip! Using Berryboost to run Raspbian & RetroPie
Berryboot is the shit. I love it
Just subscribed! Definitely going to grab one. I’ll need help with the mega man install hahaha
I made a MAME cabinet with one of these, very fun project :)
Thats a really cool little device, I never knew that existed
Great video and you're well spoken. Thank you!
heatsinks we put on the chips, which is "cool"...
Yup.. that is what heatsinks tho.
You earn my subscribe for having the mcnabb jersey

digipimp75 Really noob question but can it run PS1 and PS2 games well?
I love raspberry pi, got the same one and it's great device, play games and have kodi on it
It's definitely using its hardware h264 decoder for that 1080p youtube video.
Also I use a picoUPS (and a 12v to 5v step down) for running this off of your average SLA battery.
Awesome Review! Also...Loving the Philly Gear in the background...Philly Here. I sent a direct message to you to connect ;)
very interested in setting one of these up for the kids (NES and SNES).
This is awesome! Definitely going to get one!
Building a retropie as I watch this :)
Thanks Spawn very useful.
Hey John(SW) Great video awesome stuff.
Add an HDMI male to male adapter and you can pretty much have a portable mini os you can plug into any tv/monitor, not sure how you'll control it though

Nice video! Dig the shirt
I'm gonna get one of these bad boys to classically train my kids in the art of gaming
10:13 I miss Iwata
AND SO DO YOU
Great video!
So amazing dood!
bought one waiting till it arrives but when i see ur video i'm thinking about buying one more one to use as a pc and one to use as a game device thanks❤️
Use the jersy background for newsave please :)
My boy got fucking jacked.
Got the RPie3, its awesome
Which is the best Raspberry Pi? I’m planning to buy one.. I don’t care about price unless it’s under $500
i wish i wasnt so early. i enjoy reading other peoples comments :/
gay dads bear lol I’m always late
I’m 2 years late
I'm running mine off a 32 gig micro SD with a 32 Gig USB stick to back everything up constantly. The native OS is great and quick. Blows the doors off my Windows 10 PC. Printing is it's biggest weakness. Just use Libre office to save your documents as pdf files internally and to your memory stick. Then I plug the USB stick into my PC and adobe acrobat opens and prints them to my Epson. Quickly discovered that the spell checker in my copy of Libre office doesn't work! Setting up Retropie or Amibian failed. Nothing worked as demonstrated by others. Win32 would not flash software to an SD card! I gave up wasting my time on that and bought a 128 Gig SD from a programmer in Michigan and he put 11,000 games with art and splash screens on it for $65. Well worth it. I have PS3 controller working well, now if I could just get Napalm and T-Zero running on it. These bigger games needed the CD present for audio.
that power supply with that button is a bad way to go. pick up a normal cord and then use gpio pins 5/6 along with a momentary switch plus the associated script. that is the proper way to do things. As for not needing a fan that is correct however it will throttle down to 600mhz if temps hit 82°C+. Certain programs and Emulation systems will push you over 82 pretty easy which will cause a performance hit making people think that it is a crappy board when in fact it is not.
But can it run crysis?
not without a crysis amount of devlopement
Better question can it emulate OG Xbox Games
Zeus Fuentes no
It can stream Crysis for Steam on another computer to your T.V.
It can emulate PSP , and PSX games... but not Xbox.
LOL! I have a Raspberry Pi 3 AND that same Flash T-shirt.
what happened to the tech wave with the gba micro??
korey2040 I had a gameboy micro, sadly I sold it to GameStop for credit and god damn they are expensive now
that heatsink is soo cute
The only thing that lets the Pi down is the Micro card as they go wrong after a short time then you have to load it all again!!
You can use DualBoot so you don't have to switch your microSD cards.
Does it have game genie?
Initially, the R-Pi came to existence as look cost solution to get interested in coding/programming (Moglen spoke of the coding shortage): allow any low income kid around the planet with TV access to a inexpensive computer.
The fiddler's and maker faire groups adopted the Pi but it's initial goal had much nobler and ambitious goal than cheap toy or Arduino alternative. Shame that the message got lost.
Tell Brian Westbrook thanks for the 2 Super Bowls. If it wasn't for that punt return in 2003 against the giants. They never would have rebuilt their team.
You don't need two sd cards. I read you can dual boot both.
2019: rasberry pi runs pac man
2100: rasberry pi becomes worlds fastest computer
2119: rasberry pi has 38 Petabites (look it up)
There's a delay when you play games, but you can change that.
A couple of questions
•Can retro pi run offline ?
•Can I use a megadrive controller USB adapter with this
Thanks
Yup u can do both
Very good video. But super punch out is very slow!? What i have to do?
love the retropie but am so lazy with these hardware stuff. 😧😔
I just bought one will be using for beats of rage games and beat n ups that's only release on pc like turtles rescue Palooza.
Why doNOT they just sell it with the Retro Gaming software built in? And or with the OS built in as well, that way we can choose which one we want
If you want to play a youtube video copy the url and paste it in vlc media player
Little factoid. Retropie is still Linux. Its just Raspbian with a bunch of software.
Hi Spawn! Make a video on the Retro Engine Sigma. Is it comparable to RaspberryPi?
Putting that heat sink on is equivalent to safety glasses in your situation. Mostly no reason, but anything can happen!
I had to look up and order a 2.5A power supply because I literally could not find one in stores anywhere. The most those went up to was 2.1 to 2.4A, and they wanted a LOT. DoomRater 2.1a is more then enough without USB being drained for power u can run around 400ma
Already tried that, still got lightning bolt warnings about low power in RetroPie.
