How to fix a rusty corner bead | Rusty angle bead

  • A rusty corner bead or a rusty angle bead can be a real problem to fix and must be done correctly because if you try to paint or paper over it without fixing the rusty bead first the rust will eventually come through the paint or paper. This video shows how to remove the plaster for the affected area, clean the bead and apply some rust convertor before filling the area and painting it using a stain blocking primer. Once the primer has dried you can paint the damage with the paint of your choice, or even wallpaper over it.

    What situations would you suggest that you just replace the entire cornerbead instead? And more specifically I'd ask would you recommend removal for a bathroom floor to ceiling shower wall cornerbead and which the entire bottom of the drywall about 3" high all the way across and again about a foot up another area roughly 2x4 are both water damage and will also need to be replaced. (Probably just going to replace entire drywall with newer mold resistant versions and to check fully the framing for any real problems before worrying about cosmetics) thanks for the video and keep them coming. 👍

    Great step by step instruction video! Top job as usual, may I ask you a question? I have that same purdy scraper, it's fantastic, but is there anyway of "sharpening" the edge of it? I've ran it over sandpaper a few times but not sure if I should use an oil stone. I would greatly appreciate your advice!

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 років тому +2

      An oil stone would probably be the best option to resharpen it.
      I have badly damaged mine as I was trying to cut a wall plug that was sticking out, so I hit it with my hammer but there was a sheared off screw in the plug!
      I'll have to grind mine back and resharpen it when I get time.

    On the point of using Zinsser cover stain, I used that many years ago in a house where the ceilings were covered in nicotine staining. Ended up just using standard oil based paint in the end as the Zinsser was not covering enough for the money and it worked just as well. Use oil based on damp patches too with great results. Can even use an old paint where the pigment has separated. Suppose one advantage to Zinsser is the quick drying time.

    How long does rust converters work for ? Does coverstain prevent rust coming back?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 років тому +1

      The rust convertor turns the rust into a sound surface that can be over painted. The Coverstain should prevent it bleeding through (although that is unlikely) and leaves a good surface to paint over. Coverstain is a brilliant product as it dries so quickly.

      Hi Joe,

    I don’t get it, the plasterer installs an inferior bead which will definitely rust, destroy the plaster when it expands. This seems like a work guarantee scheme, so they get more work when it goes wrong. Why don’t they use stainless, so simple.🙄🤦‍♂️🤣♥️
