How To Paint Rusty Metal

  • Here is how to paint rusty metal the easy way. Rather then sending all of the rust off of the metal, you could buy a rest converting primer, which mixes with the rust and converts it into a primer paint that protects the middle underneath. You can paint over it once you are done, or you can just use it as a standalone coat of paint. If you want to paint rusty metal, and you don't care if it looks really good or not, rust converting primer is a great option, and it is a lot faster and cheaper than sending all the rust off of the metal before you paint it. Here is where to get it:

You really need to push and stipple the loaded brush into that rusted metal (rather than just brushing it on lightly) and apply two or three coats of it for better coverage and protection. Priming and painting is then advised.

@@robbiesharp311 I used a product called Plastikote for many years. Scrape off loose rust, paint it on as a clear coat and it dries to a dark blue/black hard coat which I then paint with the car colour. It is stunningly good. I now find Plastikoat was bought out by Dupli-Color. Looking at their website Dupli-Color does a product called Rust Fix which I suspect is Plastikote rebranded. Unfortunately they only sell it now as an aerosol from what I see, though I could be wrong. I always keep a bottle of Plastikote on the shelf and touch up rust whenever it appears. That, combined with an annual Rust Check spray treatment every year means the bodies of my cars never fail me. Hope that helps.
On reading further, Corroseal is evidently an identical product judging by the described action, plus it is sold in a small plastic bottle (non-aerosol). That would be my choice for future purchases.

I remember way back in the 1980s when they are selling a particular paint that contains fish oil, and all you have to do is to use all of the different kinds of steel brush inorder to reach all of the rusted metal parts and components inorder to remove all loose rust flakes and then spray or bush that fish oil-based paint because the fish oil will allow the synthetic resin component of the paint to penetrate right through all of that stubborn and tenacious rust UNTIL IT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH UNRUSTED STEEL OR IRON ITSELF.

Wire brushed my frame & front end etc(E350 4x4 van)... then put this stuff on and wanted to see how long it would last. So far its been 3-4 years and only a little has come back through, so this time I'm gonna do it again with Rustoleum Professional grade Oil gloss black to seal it since Corroseal is only a Primer. Even a body shop guy said stay again from those undercoatings cause they are all rubberized and just peel. You can also just mix the rustoleum with acetone to spray it in the hard to reach areas with - 4 parts rustoleum to 1 part acetone ratio, then clean gun with Lacquer thinner first then mineral spirits.

Same thing happened to me with the truck in the video. I ended up putting a coat of rustoleum black barbecue paint over it. This stuff works great as a primer, but a coat of paint over it makes it last a long time.

After looking at scores of these rust stop videos I am thinking about Fluid Film or similar lanolin type product. Up here in eastern Canada when our highway snow plows start to get rusty they get sand blasted and a coat of zinc paint before they get another coat of snowplow yellow. Makes a huge difference when one accidentally doesn't get the zinc paint and pops rust by next spring. Use it anytime I paint something rusty.

The best method I found to work is getting an angle grinder with a flap disc, getting the frame as close to bare metal as possible than power washing it thoroughly let it sit for a few days to dry. Than roll, spray or brush rustoleum oil based paint apply it very thick. Give it at least 3 passes. Thank me later.

I make my own oil mixture up to coat the frame and floors, 1 gallon can with motor oil and 5 or 6 tubes of h.p grease used for ball joints etc, mix it up til it's gloopy and thick and paint it on, it lasts way longer than the oil guard at Ziebart and when it starts drying out gloop on some more, I do the engine compartment, underneath the inside door jambs and anywhere I won't brush on getting in the car, my 04 Hummer had a couple small spots starting and I completely avoided them with the gloop.

I'm pleased that you've come up with a remedy just like mine. Thanks. I noticed that the frame and suspension parts don't rust when they get coated with old oil and grease just from ordinary driving. My poor old '93 "Jimmy" has a severe rust problem in the frame and the two "A" frames. I save used grease and old motor oil for my mixture. After flushing out the rocker panels, and letting them dry, I poured my solution through the long holes under the door thresholds after I covered the drain holes, and blasted the inside with compressed air which splashed it on the tops and sides, as well as the bottoms of the insides of the rockers. I let them set for a day so the mixture would sink into the bottom seams. One video recommend automatic trany oil, as it contains a rust preventer. No rusted rockers for at least 10 years.

For heavy rust use a needle scaler to remove it. It's much faster than anything else. When you use the rust converter you should also paint over it to better seal the rust from the oxygen it needs to grow,

Sage advice, always apply an aerosol spray of galvanising paint, then a coat of Smoothrite black afterwards to achieve the best results👍

  • @kcwkembm

    • @hoohoohoblin

+kcwkembm that sounds like a good idea to me. This rust converter works well, but it works even better if she put something over it, and that underliner stuff is perfect.

    • @fakiirification

DO NOT put undercoating over rust, even converted. Undercoating is something that has to be done at the factory on pristine metal for it to have any impact. If you apply it over even a little rust spot it will just hide the cancer until its eaten a hole through the frame.

It is best if you paint it. After being outside for a little over a year, mine started getting a little bit rusty in spots. The best thing would be to prime it with the stuff, and then paint over with the rust oleum or something else that is tough.

Looks the same as "KURUST" IN THE UK by hammerite . Used it 25 years ago with a top coat of hammerite paint once curred it worked very well but the rust always slowly crept back , the more rust removed prior to treating the longer it lasted before some rust showed threw ......5 years plus so a great product imho

+Noxious Rooster i’m sure it does work better if you sand most of the rust off. I agree that this is a pretty good product even though it doesn’t last forever. I was pretty impressed that it turned the rust and to paint as well as it did.

  • @willsrestorations

I'm sorry as a restoration shop owner for nearly 37 years I can't agree with your process, you have to remember that if you don't at least get the loose rust off your rails then all you're doing is sealing in the rust which will grow inside quickly and this will become a nightmare. At least take a high-speed polisher with a flat wheel or a large scuff wheel and get the loose stuff off and this actually works pretty good after that

    • @Zenkai76

May have been asked already. Can you apply POR 15 over this and expect good adhesion? And if so, would you want to thoroughly rinse prior to applying POR 15? I know POR makes their own metal prep but I think it's very weak. Great video, thanks!

    • @richb7414

A rust converter containing Phosphoric acid? The Phosphoric acid bonds with any iron oxide still present ( Rust ) and changes it chemically into ferric phosphate ( Black Stuff ) which is an inert compound that will absolutely stop any rust coming back

Moisture will find its way, but it will be many years for that metal to fall apart. Metal will contract in winter and will expand in summer leaving micro surface areas exposed to moisture. You can slow down oxidation, but cant completely stop the process
