Yes, I am a 26 year old who has NO IDEA what this movie is even about is even about - so I take YOU on a journey to watch me give you: What I think the movie is about, real time me watching, and my final review.

Yes girl every time and yes even watching you cry right now I still cried.....but this movie has so laughter in it too it is worth the crying!
Want a real tear jerker? Watch "Black Hawk Down". Don't wear your mascara. You'll look like a drunken clown afterwards.

I have seen this movie no less than 50 times, and I cry EVERY SINGLE TIME!
Me: "It's my day off; I'll watch this while doing housework."
My neighbors: "Why is that middle-aged man crying while taking out his recycling?"
The movie already is so -rough-, but our Ashleigh is also so real. She gets it. I love watching her watch things.
I'm folding laundry and bawling my eyes out; I get it.

Shelby was based on the writer’s sister, who was not only a type-1 diabetic, she was a “brittle diabetic” which meant she was probably checking her blood sugar 8-10 times a day, and she also had serious kidney issues. Those things together made pregnancy extremely dangerous for her - which is why M’Lynn was so unhappy about Shelby’s pregnancy.
Also remember that the movie was from 1989, but the story was from earlier than that. Diabetes management has come a long way since then.

The hospital scenes were shot in the same hospital as the writers sister. And the nurses were her nurses when she died
@@QueenCityHistory The real Shelby's mother insisted on watching the filming of the "turning off the machines" scene, specifically because Julia Roberts would, in the end, get up out of the bed.
My sister, mother, and I have always loved this movie. Top 5 for me. My nieces watched this movie for the first time with with us about two months before my younger niece (14 then) found out she was a type 1 diabetic. A few months later my sister realized she thought she couldn’t have kids because of this movie and how we told her it was based on a true story. My sister had to explain to her diabetes treatment was a lot different now.
My wife was an insulin dependent diabetic for over 40 years. The low blood sugar incident is exactly what is like, sometimes worse.
The way Sally Field turns on a dime in the cemetery scene is a master-class in acting. She's amazing.

It’s inspired by a true story, and written by the deceased’s Brother, Robert Harling. He said his mother insisted on being on set for Shelby’s death scene. She stayed until the very end, because she wanted to see Julia get out of that bed and walk away, something she didn’t get to see in real life.

Thank you for sharing that. I can understand why Susan's mother would want to do that. You are not marked by what you accomplished or what you process when you die but by how you are grieved.
Dolly Parton never had children for several reasons. The first was when she first got married, she wound up caring for her younger siblings for several years, so she did not start her own family at that time. Then, when she got older, she had a condition where she had to have a hysterectomy, which took her ability to have children. So she just accepted that she was never going to have her own family, and she dedicated her life to making other children happy, so I would say she's done an amazing job at that.

She also had a younger brother that died as a baby so that also had an effect on her 😢

I'm a type 1 diabetic (insulin dependant) and this movie came out when I was 20, five years after the insulin producing part of my pancreas died. I don't think I've ever met a woman that didn't cry over this movie.

Girl, I thought I cried when Shelby died, then came the graveside scene. I about died. I was blubbering and then that "hit this!" I have never in my life laughed so hard in the middle of crying before. I don't think anyone could ever replicate this kind of movie again. I've seen this movie so many times I can't count but I still cry when Shelby dies its just so doggone sad.

It's such a poweful feeling, to be just sobbing with grief for M'Lynn and in the middle of it just busting up laughing hysterically! If I'm flipping through channels and I see this movie on I have to stop what I'm doing and watch it no matter what!
There was a remake, but some things should NEVER be. Steel Magnolias being one of them.
You know the movie is that powerful when watching a review of someone watching Steel Magnolia's gets you worked up and takes you out by a death you know is coming.
When Shelby died, I teared up but when the graveside scene came, I lost it. That scene hits different.
I'm British, and can categorically say 'Dolly is an international treasure' - she's an amazing woman

FACTS
Sally Fields scene at the funeral, is one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in a movie.
She is an icon.
Sally is definitely one of the greatest. When she was crying at Shelby’s casket saying “Lord I wish I could understand”…just broke my heart.

The line "I do not see plays because I can nap at home for free" is even more hilarious when delivered onstage during the play, which was the original form of this story, on which the movie is based.

I'm a 50-year-old man who has watched this countless times, all the way back to when it came out. I *still* ugly-cry throughout the last part of this, and Sally Fields is AMAZING during the funeral breakdown scene. I hope hubby and Beans gave you lots of hugs after this. It's a rough one but a wonderful one. :) *HUG*

I'm a 46 year old man. And I didn't cry when watching this. It just rained indoors. Very, very briefly. And only my face got wet.
Me too. I am a 48 year old biker looking guy and I cried again watching this review.
My sister is type 1 diabetic and had her baby 4 years ago now. I don't think it was as risky now as it was in the 80's but she had some special care and got to go to a really nice hospital. She also had to give birth quite early so there would be less risk. I'm glad I saw this film afterwards because I would've been so worried otherwise!

The writer/director wrote this story about his sister, who died of complications from diabetes. On the day they were filming Julia Roberts’ death scene, his mom was on set and he was surprised she’d want to watch such a heartbreaking scene.
He went over to her at one point and she was crying and he asked if she wanted to leave and she shook her head. “I need to see her get up out of that bed.”

There are many scenes in Steel Magnolias that make people cry. But the little part that always gets to me is when Spud, who's not very good at talking and expressing his feelings, tells Truvy "...if something like that ever happened to me (your wife dying), I don't know what I'd do." That's the best way he knows how to tell her he loves her, and it makes me choke up every time.
At least it used to. Now whenever I see it, all I can hear in my head is "stop playing with the wax, Spud, shit!"

There are more severe types of Diabetes. On a different note, I recently lost my 21 yr old son and I can tell you that the cemetery scene is so totally accurate. I have a hard time making it through that scene now.

Re: the corsage thing...back in the day, brides changed out of their wedding gowns into "going away" outfits and the couple immediately left for the honeymoon. Corsages were a usual part of the going-away ensemble. Olympia Dukakis, who played Clairee, just passed this month.
It is a moral imperative, then, that you watch "9 to 5," Dolly Parton's movie debut.

I love that movie...one of my favorite lines is from that..."I'm older and have more insurance" when she slams repeatedly into the car of the girls that said "we're younger and faster" while stealing her parking spot.

Yes for sure, its a classic.
So it’s really more moving when you find out the back story of this movie. It was originally a play written by a man named Robert Harling, who based Shelby on his sister. He wanted her baby to know about what she went through. Both he and his mother were present for much of the filming. Now get the tissues for this next part, the nurses in the movie who shut off Shelby’s life support were the actual nurses who turned off his sisters machines. Also, they had tried to get his mother to leave the set for that scene thinking it would be too hard for her but she insisted on staying. Her reason? She wanted to she Julia Roberts get up out of the hospital bed when it was over since her daughter didn’t. All of this information is on the commentary on the DVD.
This is the first movie I ever cried over, I was 12 and saw it in the theaters when it was first released. Sally Field is one of my favorite actresses, she is phenomenal. Another great performance of hers is in the movie “An Eye For An Eye”.

Just so you know, the preacher/pastor during the wedding/funeral is Shelby's REAL LIFE brother who wrote her story! What's more, is that her real family was on set during filming and, during the hospital/Shelby's death scene, they were asked if they wanted to leave because of how emotional it may be for them to basically relieve her death. They said no because they wanted to see "Shelby" wake up, even if it was only pretend. Breaks your heart, doesn't it?

Terms of Endearment is another good movie. It has Shirley Mclaine, the one who played Weezer in Steel Magnolias. Her performance was top notch. Man now i feel like doing a marathon of these feel-good-sad classics

Oh my stars, the cemetery scene when Sally Field screams, “WHHHHYYYYYYY”. It just nicks my heart. Just gut wrenching.
Just that whole break down is such a perfect depiction of the pain and loss of death and what it does to us as sentient beings. It's just perfect.

It broke my heart when I was young. Now that I am a mother, it rips me to shreds.
@@Gradyolson And, to your point of “perfection”, I used to be an actress, and the craft and the artistry of Sally Field in that scene is extraordinary: She brought us all to a place where we hurt for her character, and where we could relate but there is a fine fine line, that had she crossed it, the scene would have been unwatchable.
Shelby's death still destroys me every time too. But then Clairee encourages M'Lynn to slap Ouiser... still elicits the heartiest laugh thru tears. ❤️
Sally Field: TV series "The Flying Nun", Starred with Burt Reynolds in the Classic Movie "Smokey and the Bandit". The women in this movie were the biggest stars of the 70's and 80's.
She also played the title role of "Gidget" in the TV series. Three different actresses played Gidget in the three original movies, but an actress named Jeff (?) Donnell played her mother in two of them; years later Ms Donnell played Sally Field's mother*-in-law* on a series called "The GIrl With Something Extra" (the "something extra" was that Sally's character could read minds).
Jeff Donnell also played Aunt May in the '70s Spider-Man TV show.

I used to work in a movie theater when that movie and "Silence Of The Lambs" came out. Some guy came up and asked for a ticket to see "Sleeping With The Lambs". We told him it wasn't that kind of theater.

Loved your reaction to this one because this is me every time I watch this one! Definitely proves Sally Field in this one wrong though with the line "Men are supposed to be made of steel" when this movie basically breaks that armor I have completely
You have got to react to Fried Green Tomatoes after this one!
But I think that’s the point the Sally is making - women aren’t as afraid to feel everything we need to feel, even the darker and scarier emotions. We WILL sit beside the hospital bed no matter how much pain and fear we are suffering in those moments. We aren’t afraid to be vulnerable and open. It takes courage and strength to allow ourselves to completely crumble, to face grief in the eyes, and know that we are capable of doing so AND capable of picking ourselves back up again afterwards.
Vs. what the men did - compartmentalize, shove those painful feelings under the rug, and/or leave the hospital when the hurt was too much to handle without breaking down.
At first glance, we are feminine and soft and open and vulnerable like the Magnolia flower - but don’t be deceived by looks alone, bc we are made of Steel. That inherent feminine nature is a strength in many ways.
"Terms of Endearment" with Shirley MacLaine . You will love love it.

Whenever you watch a movie that affects you this strongly, you have to have a backup movie to counteract it. In this case, I recommend "Moonstruck" from about the same era. Whenever my wife puts on "Love Actually" or "Mamma Mia", I have to balance it out with something like "Pulp Fiction" or "The Thing". It's a Yin Yang thing.
And of course, more Olympia Dukakis.
Thank gawd my husband NEVER puts on Love, Actually or Mama Mia... We'd be gettin' a divorce. We balance The Thing w The Thing prequel. We balance Pulp Fiction w Reservoir Dogs.

This was filmed in Natchitoches, LA. When family or friends would come to town, I would put on my little tour guide hat and take them to all the locations, including Dolly's house on Henry St. and the church of the wedding out in the parish. It's such an impactful movie that it still celebrated here.
If you like Dolly Parton, you NEED to watch Nine-to-five.

Yes! I grew up on 9 to 5! Truthfully I was too young to understand it when it came out. I just really liked the Snow White sequence. But it was one of those movies that I continued to rewatch as I got older because then I started getting the jokes!

Steel Magnolias means Strong Southern Women. This is simply a fantastic movie. The put downs between Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser) and Olympia Dukakis (Clairee) are a masterpiece. I honestly didn't think you would cry, but I was impressed with how emotional you got. You definitely got everything out of it you were supposed to. Agreed that Dolly is a national treasure, and so is Sally Field. What a terrific reaction! I highly recommend My Girl for another sad but great movie. It's a coming of age one.
I always get this and Terms of Endearment mixed up. Christ, they screwed me up when I watched them when I was younger.
Beaches is also a good "cry" movie that I would recommend.

Sadly, the director of Coal Miner's Daughter, Michael Apted, just passed away January 7th.
The part of the movie that gets me every time is the range of emotions Sally Fields goes through at the funeral.

Have you seen the 9 to 5 movie with Dolly? It's hilarious. Also has Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. One of my favorite "comfort" movies.

As a father of a daughter with type 1 diabetes, I want to point out that some of the material in this movie is wrong. Shelby's childbirth risk is due less to the diabetes than it is to the kidney related issues she has. I think this article does a fair job of covering it.

Given that the guy who wrote the screenplay wrote it about his sister for his sisters son to see later, and that all the events including the complications came from a real place.
That you get that emotionally attached to a fictional character is incredibly touching. It says a lot about your character. You are awesome.

Coal Miner's Daughter came out when I was 9 years old. The early scenes in Loretta''s home town were filmed in my grandparent's coal mining town of Fleming Neon, KY, so it has always held a special place in my heart.

Olympia Dukakis played Clairee...and, yes, we should all aspire to be more like her in life. And, of course, like Dolly. She is a national treasure! Watching your reactions to this movie was incredible! Definitely watch 'Fried Green Tomatoes' next. I think you will love it! Also, Dolly has brought up before that kids just didn't happen for her and her husband, it wasn't a conscious decision to not have kids. Although she did mention that she had difficulty with endometriosis, which may have been a factor. Also, if we're starting the girl group, I think I might be the Quizer. lol

I'm ALL on-board for Silverado! And, yeah Tombstone was a masterpiece.
My sister was a brittle diabetic.( juvenile diabetes) she had 2 children. She was in the hospital the last 3 months of her pregnancy with both children. She passed away at age 40. She looked 80, and never really recovered from those pregnancies. So I get the shelbys mama wasn't thrilled to hear she was pregnant.
I almost don't want to recommend this because of your tendency to be just a tad emotional, but....Terms of Endearment has got to be on your list. Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser in Steel Magnolias) won an Oscar for best actress and Jack Nicholson won an Oscar for best supporting actor. The film won the Oscar for best picture and is one of the best you will ever see but be forewarned that it will bring up a ton of emotions.

When I read your teaser post earlier this week saying you cried, I was like “She either watched Beaches or Steel Magnolias.” I have to tell you, watching you cry made me cry. I've seen Terms of Endearment probably 20 times and I seriously BAWL my eyes out every time. EVERY TIME. I know what's coming and it doesn't matter lol. What a good movie. And Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser from Steel Magnolias) is amazing in that movie as the mother, probably her best performance IMO.

I found your channel a few months ago and it is, by far, my favorite reaction channel. So many good things: first, I pick up things from your reactions, like things I never noticed in the movie, etc. Second, you are frickin’ hilarious in your commentary whilst also explaining. Third, I am so glad that I am not the only person who ugly cries, especially when Sally Field breaks down after the funeral. It’s just so heart wrenching and well done. Did you know that Sally Field spent days screaming into a pillow to make her sound hoarse like she had been crying non-stop. Also, I’ve noticed lots of questions about the accuracy of the Insulin reaction. I am not so far Diabetic, but it does run in both sides of my family. I understand that Type 1 Diabetes can be quite severe much more than Type 1. There is also a thing called Brittle Diabetes where it can be quite a lot worse. So whilst the extreme insulin reaction is not typical of most Diabetics, it certainly happens in Brittle Diabetes. Finally, if you make it this far reading my horribly less than concise post, I would like you to know that I have a chronic illness that causes pain every minute of every day. Some days are not too bad, but are far outnumbered by the bad ones. It probably hasn’t crossed your mind, but your videos help me. They make me laugh and cry and everything between. I forget the pain during them. Everyday is difficult, but watching your videos take me out of this body of pain for a little while. You probably won’t see this as it’s not a new video, but please know that you are doing so much more than just videos. I promise I am working on saving for a hoodie. My best to Beans, lol.

I do love this movie. I cry so hard, every-single-time! The way Sally plays the cemetery scene, was amazing and so realistic. Right there was a mama who had spent so many years caring for her daughter, in fragile health, probably spending countless hours in appointments and hospitals and just didnt want to lose her and saw a grandchild as a fast track to losing her baby girl. The over-protectiveness is palpable and then she does lose her anyway, even after her herself going through an agonising surgery and to top it all off, her well meaning, but misguided in the moment, friend, starts preaching at her. And Sally did an amazing job with it all. The salon scene, where Shelby's blood sugar drops was played well too, because oh lord do you feel horrendous with diabetic low blood sugar. I usually get decent warning with mine, but sometimes, I will go from perfectly fine, to all but having to crawl around to get to sugar to fix it and then you are exhausted for the whole day. The whole movie, I just love it so much. And your laughter and commentary just tickled me so much too. Excellent video.xx

Shirley Maclaine who played Ouiser starred in a movie with Clint Eastwood where she pretended to be a nun for the majority of movie, Two Mules for Sister Sara. I guess that comment about her dressing up as a nun to go bar hopping was a wink at that.
Shirley MacLaine is wonderful in the film, The Apartment. That is an older movie that seriously holds up (Oscar winner for best picture), and she is ridiculously cute in it. She’s the sister of movie star, Warren Beatty, also.

His brother was the sports director for my highschool. Jerry used to come surprise the theatre kids backstage. He hugged me!! Such a kind dude.

Yes, Dolly has said many times her songs are her children... That's why she doesn't sell them, (she's also one hell of a smart businesswoman) She so wanted Elvis to record "I Will Always Love You" and he was set to, but Col. Parker refused when she refused to sell the rights. I love it when she says that story. She could possibly be the sweetest woman in the world, but she never backed down from the good olé boys!!

I'm 44 years old. I grew up in a time and place where males don't show emotion past about age 5 (It's not something I teach my boys).
I ugly cried the first, fifth, and twenty-somethingth times I watched this.
I almost never cry at movies, but this one made me cry like a damn baby. I don't know a single person who's gotten through it with a dry eye.
