    I have my first lesson booked for the 28th of October and super excited!! I found your channel tonight and have loved watching your flying videos. So much information and great insight to how you're feeling. Amazing vids man.

    Gutted for you about the lost footage, but it's a great reason to go back! As for the skills test, I'm sure you'll do fine - you've put the hours in. Worst case scenario you can take again surely? Great to hear the audio from the cockpit.

    • @TimesWithJames
      @TimesWithJames  5 років тому

      Yeah I can retake but all should be fine. Bratislava mk2 will be great also!

    Very interesting video - how do you manage to capture the comms audio?

    • @TimesWithJames

      I use a Zoom audio recorder and a plug splitter.

    Great video james, I did my skills test a few weeks ago, I don’t think you ever feel ready, you seem to fly very well. Don’t forget the examiner wants you to pass, if you mess up communicate your mistakes, most of the time they will let you redo it. Make sure your are comfortable with the examiner - I would recommend speaking to the examiner beforehand to get an understanding of what they are looking for from the test

    I fly from LPL, I sit on the centreline and always think "I can't believe they are letting me do this". As for Workload: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.
    And remember to always Hold Tight.

    • @TimesWithJames
      @TimesWithJames  5 років тому

      Yeah it’s great! As for the workload thing I try to think that...but it doesn’t always work like that!

    I could watch your flight videos all day long and not get bored. I’d love to hear more about the explanations of nav and other technicalities.
    I do have one question, when you were talking about the VORs you mentioned listening to the morse ID that they transmit. Does this mean that a pilot has to learn morse?
    Cheers

    • @TimesWithJames
      @TimesWithJames  5 років тому +2

      Thanks man! It does help to know morse, but most VOR's have a visual morse reference, so it's more spotting the 'dits and dahs' pattern when it comes!

      Ahh got it there’s a display for VOR on the instrument panel. Assuming then that the display will tell you what radial you are on. Good stuff, you’re so lucky 👍

      The way to find out which radial you’re currently in is really easy! Just twist the CDI knob until the line drifts to the middle.
      I didn’t say but most VOR’s have an attached DME (distance measuring equipment) and will say something like 10nm. So it works like this...
      Tune to the VOR/DME
      Twist the knob on the CDI so pin is central - for example it drifts on on 270degress
      Read DME which for example days 10nm
      Use your plotter on the map to plot 270degress away from the chosen beacon on your map. Measure 10nm and boom, you’ve got your position.
      All whilst flying the plane!

    I want to start training for my PPL, but I'm a bit anxious about communicating with ATC. What if you don't understand what they're saying?

    I've heard it said, that hardest part about flying is your ears going "POP!" Got that from Blackadder Goes Forth, I think. Or, might have been the bloke down the pub? So, it must be true.
    @ 4:09 "Two steps forward, one step back" (Bruce Springsteen) DON'T,,, just don't. If you're not familiar with that song or your not a fan of The Boss, then.. just don't. That song always makes my cry like a wee bairn.
    Seriously now, If you are ever going to achieve anything significant in life; an ambition over and above the tedious and mundane day to day crap, you have got to commit.
    Every faith in you, Jimmy. Stick with it. It'll come. I'm off to watch this now and have a giggle.

    The examiner just wants to see you are safe. Plus your instructor isn't going to put you forward if he doesn't think you will pass.

    • @TimesWithJames
      @TimesWithJames  5 років тому

      We’ll see. The examiners at Duxford are brilliant and really push you to ‘know’ a subject, not just pass it’s exam - if you catch my drift!

      TimesWithJames Agree mate and that's good but they aren't expecting top gun 😎 I'm sure my examiner said if he could trust me to fly his children then he's going to pass me
