Not sure about the Japanese culture but it's pretty known in Chinese culture. I'm not sure about wrist watches, but clocks are bad because in Chinese they sound similar to sending someone to the afterlife. So basically if you gift someone a clock, you're cursing them to die. However for watches, I've heard varying versions. Some claim that they're also bad luck, but some say they're actually good luck and bring fortune. Seeing as how I do see Chinese people giving watches, I think they're probably more of the good luck side? Not very sure though
