  • In this video, I use four-way pressure clamps (also known as dual-action edge clamps) and demonstrate how easy it is to do the perfect lamination on boards that are less than 1/2 inch thick.
    It’s all I will use now for table tops, cutting boards and butcher blocks.
    If you’re looking for the hardware to make your own clamps, you can find it online by googling “4-way Pressure clamps”. Or go to some of the links below:

    I have never heard of these! Fabulous double duty clamp. I always seem to loose more thickness than I want, flattening AFTER gluing with standard clamps. Tried cauls a few times with so so luck. THanks so much!!

    Nice video. I remember that Shopsmith offered very similar clamps to these many years ago.

    I agree with you eric: they are very convenient and efficient. It the same principle use in professional wall press. The only concern is about perpendicularity : it's mandatory otherwise your panel will turn in a trapeze. I own four of them and I mainly use these.

      Thanks James : ) I also have a newer video where I use my new panel clamps along with my bar clamps to do an optimal glue-up. The panel clamps provide the overall alignment and the bar clamps finish the job with even pressure throughout. Here's the new video: ua-cam.com/video/bdSROX-y6e0/v-deo.html

    I just bought three of these at a tool auction. The same mechanisms as yours but the wood is not nearly so nice. Used them on a 2' by 5' panel. Worked well. You can wax the clamps thoroughly to avoid the glue sticking or you can apply packing tape to them and that saves fiddling with the wax paper.

      Hey Barry, great idea re: waxing. I'm glad they're working out for you.

    Nice video Eric.
    I like the fact that you showed them in action.
    I thought that applying the glue was going to be cumbersome; But, not at all.

      Like someone else said, if the top bar is taken off for applying glue it would be much easier. After you spread the glue and line up your boards you place the top bar in position and the apply clamping pressure.

    Nice video.
    One thing, you can make these easier to use by dislodging the clamp hardware from the notch and removing the top bar.
    After applying glue and placing the boards on the bottom bar, you then put the top bar back in place and tighten.

      You are right. I kinda struggled until I figured that out. They can be a little clumsy but in the end they work great.

    Instead of using the wax paper, you could wrap the wooden bars with clear packing tape.

    Looks great to me. I will get a couple. Quick question first; if I want to edge join 36" boards, what is the shortest pieces of fir should I order?

    • @EricSorensenCanada
      @EricSorensenCanada  6 років тому

      Hi David! On the clamps I have, I would go with a minimum of 42" but it might be different depending on the brand of clamps. I just bought another set on Amazon from Big Horn and they recommend shorter cauls - I use 36" for those.

      Thanks for the quick reply. Big Horn on Amazon is exactly what I'm looking at. I do this as a therapy/hobby as I am disabled and my workshop is running out of space. Thanks again!

    I noticed you did not offset the one side top fixture by 2 inches as the instructions say. Is the 2 inches really necessary? Also, I am thinking abiut using 48" boards to make the clamping ability larger. Do you think it will sacrifice any strength. I want to use these for some 46 inch panels for a bar door I'm building with 6 inch wide pine. I just got these and I am in the process of researching the best setup. I plan on having 24, 36 and 48 inch boards, essentially giving me three clamps out of one. I ordered 2 and might order more.

      I didn't taper the old set in that video, but with my newer Big Horn clamps, I did taper the stock. It makes a difference on longer panels. Also, for bigger panels, I will use additional clamps like in this video: ua-cam.com/video/bdSROX-y6e0/v-deo.html

    Do these kinds of clamps work well with thicker stock? Like for a table top if you use thicker pieces of wood for the caul part?

    • @EricSorensenCanada
      @EricSorensenCanada  3 роки тому +1

      They're good for material up to 1 inch thick. For thicker material, I would use bar clamps or pipe clamps.

    Hi I know this was a year ago so not sure if you'll receive this, but I have just bought a set very similar to these, but only one slot at one end,an 12 at the other, i have no instructions so not sure what the maximum timber length can be, would you have any ideas?. Thanks.

    • @EricSorensenCanada
      @EricSorensenCanada  4 роки тому

      @john lewtas It sounds like you bought the big horn brand, which are a slightly different style and happens to be the ones I currently use. You'll need to buy 4 pieces of square baluster at a local hardwood dealer, 3 feet in length. I used fir.
      To get an idea of how to set up and use these, you can watch the video where I use them: ua-cam.com/video/bdSROX-y6e0/v-deo.html The manufacturers website has few details but here it is, just in case: www.bighorncorp.com/big-horn-19622-4-way-panel-clamp

    Never seen these before, got to get myself a set. Could I use them on larger projects, just by changing the size of the length of wood? Cheers Eric from the U.K

    • @EricSorensenCanada
      @EricSorensenCanada  5 років тому

      @Paul Gray You can probably make these work for a table top of up to 4 feet wide but generally they will work best if the width is less than 3 feet. My table tops are usually no wider than 3 feet so they work great for me. I have another video on how to d a proper glue-up with a newer version of these clamps: ua-cam.com/video/bdSROX-y6e0/v-deo.html

    Hi, Eric! Where do you buy the hardware for these?

    • @EricSorensenCanada
      @EricSorensenCanada  6 років тому +1

      Hi Gina! You will find 3 links that I posted in the description for this video (above). Rockler carries a version, I think Lee Valley Tools has a version but you can also get them on Amazon. Also, you can do a Google search for 4-way panel clamps or 4-way pressure clamps and a few more might come up.

    Use a length of Unistrut in place of the 2 x 4. Replace the wood screws with flat head machine screws with Unistrut channel spring nuts. A 10' length of Unistrut can be purchased at Home Depot for around $20. I haven't put them together yet so, I can not attest to the viability of the idea but, see no reason why it would not work.
